Whimbrel (white-rumped, Siberian, variegatus) - 2024.07.13 - Del Mar, San Diego county, California

While originally thought to be the variegatus ssp. (known as "Siberian" whimbrel), there are some concerns about the shape and size of the white on the rump/back, the coloration of the underwing, the tone of the bird's plumage, etc. While likely to remain unknown, this may represent an intergrade between variegatus and the expected Californian ssp. hudsonicus.
