Some think it's a mountain with a peak on top when you know it all. In reality it is an upside down mountain. The more you learn the more you realize what you don't know. The amount of knowledge opens up not condenses. So practice what you don't know and what you are bad at. The instrument has infinite possibilities. Probably much that hasn't even been discovered which is crazy.
You know I might just be really high but what amazes me about the internet and videos like these is; back in the day, being able to find someone who has 30+ years of guitar experience and actually having them impart their knowledge you was super rare, and finding someone like that gave you such a huge edge over your other mates and people trying to learn. Knowledge used to be like hidden gems you had to seek out. Now that knowledge and much more is instantly available, everything we need to become a master is right there. It's such a big thing but no one really thinks about it.
Surely I'm not the only person to find it highly ironic that somebody who calls himself "Putin" (and how the heck did you pull that off?>) is extolling the virtue of knowledge being shared here, when the ACTUAL Putin is a master of spreading DISinformation!

I have 30yrs invested, on and off. The last 2.5 years, I have passed 10 plateau's by practicing daily, and learning Slash, Randy, and Angus styles. You are 10000% correct. I actually need to take your advice, and properly organize practice.
@@GMorR08It can be hard to want to practice. I took some advice, and picked my favorite player's (RR), and learned some techniques from each. Then I can use them to make my own style, and finally can also play riffs I have loved since I was a kid. There's only a few teacher's on TH-cam that care enough to teach correctly. Good luck man.

4:01...I've played since 1977, not professionally, but for my own amusement. I'm inclined to say that 'focus on your why' is the best advice that can be given. When I'm exploring something that opens my imagination in the way I want it to be I keep going back for more and learning more. ...and it's been that way since I was a kid. If I focus on what I perceive as what I'm 'supposed' to learn, I lose interest every time. Thanks. Point 4...that's why I love You tube, it's a really big pond...
I’m 18 years old, turning 19 in April, and i’ve sadly been telling myself it’s too late to learn an instrument for 4 years now. In reality i should have started taking lessons and not listen to what anyone was saying to me. Now that i’m about to turn 19 and in my gap year it’s starting to settle in how much i have neglected developing my interests and discovering where my talents lie, because i never felt like i had what it took to even begin. Long story short, i wanna start learning guitar now. We have two in our house so that’s not the issue. Just trying to figure out where to begin, trying to remind myself i’ll still have time to practice despite going off to college next year. I just hate that i’m already telling myself it’s too late to chase any of my dreams and i’m bound to live an unfulfilling life. I just want to learn this, as a hobby, to make myself feel better when i’m down and sing to my own instrumentals. This video helped a lot in figuring out where to start not just practically but also mentally which is something a lot of other videos are lacking, so thank you so much for this! I don’t want to become the greatest player of all time, i just wanna be able to play and sing some of my favorite songs someday :) i truly hope it’s not too late to learn

@Nikki E. you’re definitely right! I think social media plays a big part in that mentality for me. There’s this pressure to be highly successful at something at such a young age, cause you don’t see just how much time and patience and dedication it took for people to get to that point. I need to adjust the way i think.
Haruna Ono from Scandal was 18 when she first picked up a guitar. Scandal’s 15-year anniversary is in August. Miku Kobato started the band Band-Maid at 19 or 20 without ever having touched a guitar. She’s been a professional guitarist touring all over the world for 7 or 8 years now. I got my first guitar for my 16th birthday. That was 20 years ago. I started by printing out a guitar tab for a Blink-182 song I wanted to play and I practiced it until I could play it. And then I kept practicing until I got faster. It probably took me about a week. And then I printed out more tabs to learn more songs. I was playing very simple pop punk, but at least I was playing guitar. Just pick up the guitar and start learning something. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
"Focus on your 'Why?' " The best tip I have gotten from a guitar TH-camr. Literally gave me the solution to my existential crisis. I was always stuck why others play so great. How metal guitarist play so cool and fast, How acoustic guitar (Blues and jazz maybe, not sure) play so cool and chill. I was always stuck in the question and used to think how im gon' learn so many things in this small life. Well you gave me the answer, learn what you wan' actually do. Now I understand why they play so great at their style, because they only focus on that, nothing bout other styles, just their way of playing. Thanks man 🥺
That sunburst strat is so beautiful that when I am holding such a beauty I can forgive my limitations as a guitarist. A beautiful instrument is part of the whole thing. [I started on a really cheap instrument with bad action, but it did have a nice sunburst finish. So when you combine that with a well made instrument, it's inspiring.
I think its amazing for someone like yourself to share your knowledge simply because you want to and put yourself at risk to deal with the ignorance of others who have nothing better to do than troll channels and leave pathetic comments because they have absolutely no life. Boy I hate people that knock down every good fake excuse I try to rely on. lol. All solid ideas, solid advice and words of wisdom from someone who has obv been there and back. Worth a listen.
Back in the day I was learning there was no videos, tapes or you tube to watch. You either listen to records over and over to pick up a tune or went somewhere to have someone show you. What got me going and really helped was a older guy next door played guitar and showed me the cowboy cords. Later on the first song I learned was wild wood flower. Nowadays there is TH-cam and many teachers out there. Big difference from the past kids.
My family and I had an acoustic guitar for years, and no one wanted to play it, or they were lazy. I thought I could never learn something as “hard” as a guitar, but once I was introduced to Band and my dear Clarinet, I have been learning lots of notes during the years, and now I feel like I can learn the guitar. I also want to play the Electric guitar, so I’ll take what I have, as I am only 13. I also don’t have anyone that’s good in the guitar around me, but if I go out of state, I can meet my grandparents, and they can play very well. But I do have TH-cam. Lots of great and various teachers that are both virtual and free! Today is my first day, and I can play the E minor and other similar chords, I can also identify parts of the guitar like the nut, tuner, frets, strings, strap peg, bridge, sound hole, etc. I have also completely tuned my guitar using TH-cam and an app. It’s like another mountain. I have already started my hike in the Clarinet Mt., but the trail of the Acoustic Guitar can be rough and very different than my experience. I am ready for the tough road and the long adventure that waits for me.

The 'order' is absolutly true as I try to progress, I constantly have to go back 2-3 steps. But I like so many am not chasing a masters degree just competence, and this is the problem with so many teachings.

My weakness is about my right hand picking. Lately I tried some tips that land my right hand on the bridge but some how it is kinda uncomfortable, when going down to 5th and 6th string. Did you have any video mention about or tip for me? Very grateful if you can give me any idea

I'm watching this video because it also applies to piano, although I like playing the guitar too. I love the feel of a strat in my hands. I just have to caress the smooth finish. There's just something beautiful about it that goes way beyond music.
NICE CAT! 44 years in - very lucky to have met and played with some wonderful people - but you pretty much nailed it on the head! It's not magic it's practice! And practice incorrectly is Paramount. I teach myself and sometimes the kids come twice and realize OMG there's work involved here! 1 beautiful thing that you can do is try and learn one new thing every day! One new cord, maybe one new in version of a minor 7 flat 5 chord that you don't know! Keep at it guys eventually it just flows right through you! That doesn't mean you don't have to play 8 hours a day to get there! Carlos Santana one said in one of his articles and guitar player the "DISCIPLINE is FREEDOM!" And unfortunately on UTube I was looking up some music the other day and five of the six videos were completely wrong! Great video Erich. Ive been playing now for close to 10 years. I love all types of music Pop, Blues, Classic Rock and have many guitar heroes, Hendrix, Page, Gilmour, Clapton, Chuck, Keef, Slash, Ive tried it all acoustic, slide, lead (and for the life of me still can't play a decent solo) however....about 2 years ago I really got into Rhythm guitar more importantly Malcolm Young ACDC. Ive always loved his riffs. Just the power and rawness of ACDC live concerts. That was a light bulb moment for me. I focused on his style and there was no stopping me. I purchased an Eastwood Classic AC (Malcolm Young Gretsch style jet) both in cherry red and natural finish and a Classic 6 (Gretsch White Falcon style) and a Marshall 50 watt valve Origin head with a Marshall cab. Ive found my WHY and absolutely love playing ACDC Rhythm. Different strokes for different folks.... but Im the happiest I've ever been with an electric guitar. Sold all my other guitars and amps and just have the above. And yes my playing has improved immensely.
Good advice, especially that first one. It’s easy to get impatient with learning simple things and waiting long periods of time before you can tackle the songs you really want to play...but it’s worth it. I took the impatient route, learned to play some impressive songs but I was dead in the water as far as writing my own stuff. Teaching yourself to play songs and learning how to play the instrument are two different things and you’ll find it a tough go if you choose to skip ahead and start learning tabs without teaching yourself the basics

triggerfish66 honestly it’s the best way to learn. When I first picked up the guitar I practiced with this dude who had been playing for over 30 years, was in several bands and played in front of huge crowds. All we did was jam for an hour or two but I learned more playing with him than I ever did on my own or with an instructor or online
I have a friend who's been playing for 30yrs and I'm just learning how and he shows me all the rock songs that he knows (which I like and don't mind learning but at home I learn country). As far as what I practice daily is learning songs. Building a library of songs I can pull out when I go somewhere to play. I agree, learn to walk before you can fly.
"Correct Order" is purely subjective, but if we're guessing.... Might I suggest this order? 1. Practice interval recognition 2. Study the circle of fifths 3. Learn songs (chords, melodies, rhythms) Repeat Daily!
S Userman I suggest that if you don't have someone else to assist you with ear training: Close your eyes and play any 2 notes on a keyboard (within 2 octaves), decide what interval you think it is, then open your eyes to check your answer.
That is not the correct order he gave. He said learn things in "The Correct Order" that must be the name of a book. Unless he meant the correct order as in the best way so the best way is the correct order which leads you to improve which reveals the correct order cause that's the best way. Simple. I feel like I just improved already.

Hello! I believe your points are spot on! I have been noodling with guitar, banjo, and violin for the past eight years. I've watched the videos, read the books, studied theory and spent countless hours trying to apply my knowledge and skills to the instrument. But after eight years I am still not a skilled player. I have learned a lot and can talk music to others fairly well. Sadly, I can't play with anyone else though. I have tried to run before walking, sing before talking and play bigger music than I am skilled at leaving me somewhat defeated but not broken! So, your points are absolutely true!
You CAN play with other people, and you won't get better until you do. It's a jump for sure, but even if you have the most bare fundamentals of the instrument you can jam. It'll make you a better player.
Ich wish i knew what my why is😉Too many things to focus on, want to Fingerpick, Solo, Play Blues, Rock etc. So I jump back and forth instead of concentrating on one aspect. I guess I'm going to have to narrow this down, thanks for the recommendations!

I absolute believe in "order". for example I demonstrate all classical guitar techniques step by step from right hand to the left hand. if youtube can not teach you what you want look for a good teacher and stick to it. don't rush on any random ideas for improvement.
I'm a flautist with 15+ years of experience, I play contemporary/rock music since 6 years ago. I always, always liked the guitar, especially the european folk style, and always admired my guitarist colleagues. I'm a composer, but I see myself limited because of my ignorance in harmony instruments, and after swallowed every excuse out there, I started learning (I literally ran out of excuses since I moved to an artists house where all of us are musicians, and all of my roomies are guitarists. We even have a rehearsal room in the house and many instruments). As I found myself ignorant in the basics (concepts), I started navigating youtube and your videos were the ones more interesting for me. I wanted to thank you for so much interesting and useful content, I really admire your drive to teach, one don't find that so easily out there. Will keep this practice up since I really need to know how to put my musical ideas into reality, I feel so limited right now! But with time and patience I will rock in the guitar, I know that. My husband had 3 guitars and everyday as i look on them, gonna like inviting me to play them so thia night i cannot sleep so I will start learning now even i would love to play keyboard one day. I believe playing an instrument is a therapy since I am in need;) thanks for this video
I agree with everything he says here. And I can speak from experience. I have been playing for 4 years and I am almost at intermediate level> I realized I have been practicing too much of some things, too little of others. YOu must learn in an orderly fashion. Yes you must learn some music theory . Otherwise you are just memorizing songs . I bought his unstoppable guitar program a couple of years ago and now I am going back to the beginning and some of the concepts are making much more sense to me now. He is a good teacher. And overall cool guy. I would highly recommend his guitar program, It's not expensive at all for what you get. He starts at the basics and you keep moving on in the correct order. He will always answer a question if you need. Rock on!

The whole surround yourself with those better then you thing is actually quite easy. At least for me. Not only do I know a few really good guitar players in my city, there is a ton of talented players online. I know that until I get as good as someone that I see on here that I haven't achieved enough.
My idea for videos is that you make an intermediate lesson series in order of what exactly to do or practise, maybe like 30 videos long or something. My problem is I'm always playing or learning random stuff in a totally jumbled and random order. Cant really afford lessons and if I could I wouldn't really trust my teacher as much as you.
I've been teaching myself how to play off of TH-cam and many other things for over a year and I'm definitely going to start practicing these concepts right away

When I was teaching myself piano I first made my self understand rhythm. I then proceeded to learn the notes once I learned the notes I taught my self scales and modes(with internet) once I learned my scales I taught my self about intervals and chords then played around progressions. Now I need to study my technique and my left and right hand independence. I intend on taking the same approach to guitar.

I think my why is holding me back. I go from fingerpicking to power chords and make a slugs progress on whatever I’m doing. The problem is, now that I’ve picked up a guitar, it’s made me appreciate music in a new way and I’m amazed by all the ways the guitar is used.

I just picked up the guitar this week. Seems so difficult but the light at the end of the tunnel for me is inviting my buddy who's a drummer so we can jam some of our favorite songs. Can't wait! Also, I'm a drummer, so it helps to know that this annoying beginner stage is only temporary

I am the guy who’s been playing for 30 years and sounds the same as I did when I started. It’s because I never learned the fundamentals and basic theory principals (I just wanted to learn some cool sounding Metallica riffs). I’m trying to learn that stuff now but it’s hard to unlearn all the bad techniques I’ve picked up over the years.
Amazing. Additionally, I learned a lot when playing to other people/ friends. Even if I made mistakes or if they do not like it. I lost my shyness and a lot of my ego.
MEME REVIE I do not ask people if I can play for them, except for my close friends or family. But e.g. I say to people I know from business or trainings or sports: e.g. I have written a love song for this or that person“ and then they are normally curious and want to hear it. Especially if I play it with other people together they know. Of course then I also play other pieces they might know. Hendrix, Clapton, Flamenco or even Beethoven or seldom 16 Century Music for fun.
Thanks for the video, really great tips, even for re-starters like me. :) My additional advice for those who don't know their direction yet would be: it is ok not to know, don't be intimidated by all the people who only go for one style and it's their religion. Try out & practice until something resonates with you, maybe it's even more than one thing. Your indecision is part of your journey, take your journey seriously.
@@diana-cy4kj I bought a cheap beginner Tele style guitar for £59, picks, a tuner, and a headphone amp, let’s say a year ago today (May). I remember that it felt so alien when I first held it. The ‘fret sprout’ meant I needed to order something to sand down the sides if neck, which was easily done. Even until today, I mostly practice without any amp in a quiet room. I hadn’t imagined how audible the strings alone would be. Amplification does let you hear all the mistakes/extra noise you make clearer, though. My general attitude going in was that I’d be mostly working on dexterity, scales/learning the neck, and timing. Because of this I wasn’t that concerned with anything sounding great or learning songs. Fender were offering 3 months of Fender Play, so I got that in July after using TH-cam for basics. The tutorials are way more efficient that wading through youtubers marketing themselves, for a beginners anyway. I learned that all the progress I make will depend on how much I practice, so the app was simply good for showing me that I couldn’t skip forward without mastering basic techniques. And I’ve learned that a simple notebook 📓 is necessary for me to progress fastest, because there’s no way that I can remember every kernel of knowledge, plus re-articulating adds to my understanding. I hadn’t picked up the guitar for all of January through to sometime in April after somebody I was seeing told me she thought it was a waste of time. I disagreed, but it still worked in putting me off. That conversation killed my infatuation with her too, so that was an upside. Somebody super cool told me to get back on it, and in April added me to their SimplyGuitar account. I blew the literal dust off, and was able to compare my basic agility to when I first held it 11 months before, and saw how far I’d actually come. It was harder to see back when I was moving from challenge to challenge. Also, I can hear loads more details in records now. I can hear strum patterns, picture hand movements-love that part. I revised my left and right hand exercises, and for the last few weeks I’ve been really into getting more agile again. I can play some riffs that I did through the apps, but can’t play any chord-changing sequences while keeping time. I still consider myself a beginner, and I’m aware I need an in person teacher now, (and will get one soonish,) but I feel like I’m on pace.
Thanks for the lessons. A friend told me this, the best way to learn is to mimic and copy from your fav guitar heros. Learning theory is good but learning the songs will get you playing right away and also will help you learn some theory from learning the structures of the songs rather than "knowing"-example of guitar players i met are the "player" and the "theory guy" id rather be able to play rather than know how something work but not beable to apply it on guitar, i see players who dont even learn to play befor they want to start teaching and that is a very cringy thing to me but ahh i guess everyone is different.
After watching your video for the first time I realized I pretty much practice often in the way you're trying to teach. Although I do get stuck playing some of the same stuff a bit and it's hard to find musicians just in general to surround myself with in my small town.

You know I might just be really high but what amazes me about the internet and videos like these is; back in the day, being able to find someone who has 30+ years of guitar experience and actually having them impart their knowledge you was super rare, and finding someone like that gave you such a huge edge over your other mates and people trying to learn. Knowledge used to be like hidden gems you had to seek out. Now that knowledge and much more is instantly available, everything we need to become a master is right there. It's such a big thing but no one really thinks about it.

@@GMorR08It can be hard to want to practice. I took some advice, and picked my favorite player's (RR), and learned some techniques from each. Then I can use them to make my own style, and finally can also play riffs I have loved since I was a kid. There's only a few teacher's on TH-cam that care enough to teach correctly. Good luck man.

4:01...I've played since 1977, not professionally, but for my own amusement. I'm inclined to say that 'focus on your why' is the best advice that can be given. When I'm exploring something that opens my imagination in the way I want it to be I keep going back for more and learning more. ...and it's been that way since I was a kid. I’m 18 years old, turning 19 in April, and i’ve sadly been telling myself it’s too late to learn an instrument for 4 years now. In reality i should have started taking lessons and not listen to what anyone was saying to me. Now that i’m about to turn 19 and in my gap year it’s starting to settle in how much i have neglected developing my interests and discovering where my talents lie, because i never felt like i had what it took to even begin. Long story short, i wanna start learning guitar now. We have two in our house so that’s not the issue. Just trying to figure out where to begin, trying to remind myself i’ll still have time to practice despite going off to college next year. I just hate that i’m already telling myself it’s too late to chase any of my dreams and i’m bound to live an unfulfilling life. I just want to learn this, as a hobby, to make myself feel better when i’m down and sing to my own instrumentals. This video helped a lot in figuring out where to start not just practically but also mentally which is something a lot of other videos are lacking, so thank you so much for this! I don’t want to become the greatest player of all time, i just wanna be able to play and sing some of my favorite songs someday :) i truly hope it’s not too late to learn

@Nikki E. you’re definitely right! I think social media plays a big part in that mentality for me. There’s this pressure to be highly successful at something at such a young age, cause you don’t see just how much time and patience and dedication it took for people to get to that point. I need to adjust the way i think.

Haruna Ono from Scandal was 18 when she first picked up a guitar. Scandal’s 15-year anniversary is in August. Miku Kobato started the band Band-Maid at 19 or 20 without ever having touched a guitar. She’s been a professional guitarist touring all over the world for 7 or 8 years now.
I got my first guitar for my 16th birthday. That was 20 years ago. I started by printing out a guitar tab for a Blink-182 song I wanted to play and I practiced it until I could play it. And then I kept practicing until I got faster. It probably took me about a week. And then I printed out more tabs to learn more songs. I was playing very simple pop punk, but at least I was playing guitar. Just pick up the guitar and start learning something. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

The best tip I have gotten from a guitar TH-camr. Literally gave me the solution to my existential crisis.
I was always stuck why others play so great.
How metal guitarist play so cool and fast,
How acoustic guitar (Blues and jazz maybe, not sure) play so cool and chill.
I was always stuck in the question and used to think how im gon' learn so many things in this small life.
Well you gave me the answer, learn what you wan' actually do.
Now I understand why they play so great at their style, because they only focus on that, nothing bout other styles, just their way of playing.

That sunburst strat is so beautiful that when I am holding such a beauty I can forgive my limitations as a guitarist. A beautiful instrument is part of the whole thing. [I started on a really cheap instrument with bad action, but it did have a nice sunburst finish. So when you combine that with a well made instrument, it's inspiring.
I think its amazing for someone like yourself to share your knowledge simply because you want to and put yourself at risk to deal with the ignorance of others who have nothing better to do than troll channels and leave pathetic comments because they have absolutely no life. Back in the day I was learning there was no videos, tapes or you tube to watch. You either listen to records over and over to pick up a tune or went somewhere to have someone show you. What got me going and really helped was a older guy next door played guitar and showed me the cowboy cords. Later on the first song I learned was wild wood flower. Nowadays there is TH-cam and many teachers out there. Big difference from the past kids.

My family and I had an acoustic guitar for years, and no one wanted to play it, or they were lazy. I thought I could never learn something as “hard” as a guitar, but once I was introduced to Band and my dear Clarinet, I have been learning lots of notes during the years, and now I feel like I can learn the guitar. I also want to play the Electric guitar, so I’ll take what I have, as I am only 13. I also don’t have anyone that’s good in the guitar around me, but if I go out of state, I can meet my grandparents, and they can play very well. But I do have TH-cam. Lots of great and various teachers that are both virtual and free!
Today is my first day, and I can play the E minor and other similar chords, I can also identify parts of the guitar like the nut, tuner, frets, strings, strap peg, bridge, sound hole, etc. I have also completely tuned my guitar using TH-cam and an app. It’s like another mountain. I have already started my hike in the Clarinet Mt., but the trail of the Acoustic Guitar can be rough and very different than my experience. I am ready for the tough road and the long adventure that waits for me.

The 'order' is absolutly true as I try to progress, I constantly have to go back 2-3 steps. But I like so many am not chasing a masters degree just competence, and this is the problem with so many teachings.

I'm watching this video because it also applies to piano, although I like playing the guitar too. I love the feel of a strat in my hands. I just have to caress the smooth finish. There's just something beautiful about it that goes way beyond music.
NICE CAT! 44 years in - very lucky to have met and played with some wonderful people - but you pretty much nailed it on the head! It's not magic it's practice! And practice incorrectly is Paramount. I teach myself and sometimes the kids come twice and realize OMG there's work involved here! 1 beautiful thing that you can do is try and learn one new thing every day! One new cord, maybe one new in version of a minor 7 flat 5 chord that you don't know! Keep at it guys eventually it just flows right through you! That doesn't mean you don't have to play 8 hours a day to get there! Carlos Santana one said in one of his articles and guitar player the "DISCIPLINE is FREEDOM!" And unfortunately on UTube I was looking up some music the other day and five of the six videos were completely wrong! One of the most important things that I didn't hear you say is you have to learn how to trust your own ears! Keep up the good work my brother from another mother!

Great video Erich. Ive been playing now for close to 10 years. I love all types of music Pop, Blues, Classic Rock and have many guitar heroes, Hendrix, Page, Gilmour, Clapton, Chuck, Keef, Slash, Ive tried it all acoustic, slide, lead (and for the life of me still can't play a decent solo) however....about 2 years ago I really got into Rhythm guitar more importantly Malcolm Young ACDC. Ive always loved his riffs. Just the power and rawness of ACDC live concerts. That was a light bulb moment for me. I focused on his style and there was no stopping me. I purchased an Eastwood Classic AC (Malcolm Young Gretsch style jet) both in cherry red and natural finish and a Classic 6 (Gretsch White Falcon style) and a Marshall 50 watt valve Origin head with a Marshall cab. Ive found my WHY and absolutely love playing ACDC Rhythm. Different strokes for different folks.... but Im the happiest I've ever been with an electric guitar. Sold all my other guitars and amps and just have the above. And yes my playing has improved immensely.
My problem is that I want to be Jimmy page, David Gilmore, Brian May, Slash, James Hetfeild, John Lennon, and Van Halen all in one. And at once.

Good advice, especially that first one. It’s easy to get impatient with learning simple things and waiting long periods of time before you can tackle the songs you really want to play...but it’s worth it. I took the impatient route, learned to play some impressive songs but I was dead in the water as far as writing my own stuff. Teaching yourself to play songs and learning how to play the instrument are two different things and you’ll find it a tough go if you choose to skip ahead and start learning tabs without teaching yourself the basics

triggerfish66 honestly it’s the best way to learn. When I first picked up the guitar I practiced with this dude who had been playing for over 30 years, was in several bands and played in front of huge crowds. All we did was jam for an hour or two but I learned more playing with him than I ever did on my own or with an instructor or online
I have a friend who's been playing for 30yrs and I'm just learning how and he shows me all the rock songs that he knows (which I like and don't mind learning but at home I learn country). As far as what I practice daily is learning songs. Building a library of songs I can pull out when I go somewhere to play. I agree, learn to walk before you can fly.
"Correct Order" is purely subjective, but if we're guessing....
Might I suggest this order?
1. Practice interval recognition
2. Study the circle of fifths
3. Learn songs (chords, melodies, rhythms)
Repeat Daily!

Close your eyes and play any 2 notes on a keyboard (within 2 octaves), decide what interval you think it is, then open your eyes to check your answer.

That is not the correct order he gave. He said learn things in "The Correct Order" that must be the name of a book. Unless he meant the correct order as in the best way so the best way is the correct order which leads you to improve which reveals the correct order cause that's the best way. Simple. Hello! I believe your points are spot on! I have been noodling with guitar, banjo, and violin for the past eight years. I've watched the videos, read the books, studied theory and spent countless hours trying to apply my knowledge and skills to the instrument. But after eight years I am still not a skilled player. I have learned a lot and can talk music to others fairly well. Sadly, I can't play with anyone else though. I have tried to run before walking, sing before talking and play bigger music than I am skilled at leaving me somewhat defeated but not broken! So, your points are absolutely true!
You CAN play with other people, and you won't get better until you do. It's a jump for sure, but even if you have the most bare fundamentals of the instrument you can jam. It'll make you a better player.
Ich wish i knew what my why is😉Too many things to focus on, want to Fingerpick, Solo, Play Blues, Rock etc. So I jump back and forth instead of concentrating on one aspect. I guess I'm going to have to narrow this down, thanks for the recommendations!

I absolute believe in "order". for example I demonstrate all classical guitar techniques step by step from right hand to the left hand. if youtube can not teach you what you want look for a good teacher and stick to it. don't rush on any random ideas for improvement.
I'm a flautist with 15+ years of experience, I play contemporary/rock music since 6 years ago. I always, always liked the guitar, especially the european folk style, and always admired my guitarist colleagues. I'm a composer, but I see myself limited because of my ignorance in harmony instruments, and after swallowed every excuse out there, I started learning (I literally ran out of excuses since I moved to an artists house where all of us are musicians, and all of my roomies are guitarists. We even have a rehearsal room in the house and many instruments).
As I found myself ignorant in the basics (concepts), I started navigating youtube and your videos were the ones more interesting for me. I wanted to thank you for so much interesting and useful content, I really admire your drive to teach, one don't find that so easily out there. Will keep this practice up since I really need to know how to put my musical ideas into reality, I feel so limited right now! But with time and patience I will rock in the guitar, I know that. And I will always remember where I started.

I agree with everything he says here. And I can speak from experience. I have been playing for 4 years and I am almost at intermediate level> I realized I have been practicing too much of some things, too little of others. YOu must learn in an orderly fashion. Yes you must learn some music theory . Otherwise you are just memorizing songs . I bought his unstoppable guitar program a couple of years ago and now I am going back to the beginning and some of the concepts are making much more sense to me now. He is a good teacher. And overall cool guy. I would highly recommend his guitar program, It's not expensive at all for what you get. He starts at the basics and you keep moving on in the correct order. He will always answer a question if you need. Rock on!

The whole surround yourself with those better then you thing is actually quite easy. At least for me. Not only do I know a few really good guitar players in my city, there is a ton of talented players online. I know that until I get as good as someone that I see on here that I haven't achieved enough.
My idea for videos is that you make an intermediate lesson series in order of what exactly to do or practise, maybe like 30 videos long or something. My problem is I'm always playing or learning random stuff in a totally jumbled and random order. Cant really afford lessons and if I could I wouldn't really trust my teacher as much as you.
I've been teaching myself how to play off of TH-cam and many other things for over a year and I'm definitely going to start practicing these concepts right away

When I was teaching myself piano I first made my self understand rhythm. I then proceeded to learn the notes once I learned the notes I taught my self scales and modes(with internet) once I learned my scales I taught my self about intervals and chords then played around progressions. Now I need to study my technique and my left and right hand independence. I intend on taking the same approach to guitar.
What I learned from this video: Learn the A and D chords before you learn the F chord. I also learned he assumed I knew that.

I think my why is holding me back. I go from fingerpicking to power chords and make a slugs progress on whatever I’m doing. The problem is, now that I’ve picked up a guitar, it’s made me appreciate music in a new way and I’m amazed by all the ways the guitar is used.
I would like a lesson on clean bending where no unwanted sounds are made when bending. I find it happens in certain spots on the neck.

I am the guy who’s been playing for 30 years and sounds the same as I did when I started. It’s because I never learned the fundamentals and basic theory principals (I just wanted to learn some cool sounding Metallica riffs). Amazing. Additionally, I learned a lot when playing to other people/ friends. Even if I made mistakes or if they do not like it. I lost my shyness and a lot of my ego.

MEME REVIE I do not ask people if I can play for them, except for my close friends or family. But e.g. I say to people I know from business or trainings or sports: e.g. I have written a love song for this or that person“ and then they are normally curious and want to hear it. Especially if I play it with other people together they know. Of course then I also play other pieces they might know. Hendrix, Clapton, Flamenco or even Beethoven or seldom 16 Century Music for fun.
Exactly right focus on what you want to play and in that style that scale, mode etc.then expand to others.
I’d add. Learn how to create great tone! That makes it so much more fun!

My additional advice for those who don't know their direction yet would be: it is ok not to know, don't be intimidated by all the people who only go for one style and it's their religion. Try out & practice until something resonates with you, maybe it's even more than one thing. Your indecision is part of your journey, take your journey seriously.

So it’s been a year now, how is it going?
@@diana-cy4kj I bought a cheap beginner Tele style guitar for £59, picks, a tuner, and a headphone amp, let’s say a year ago today (May).
I remember that it felt so alien when I first held it. The ‘fret sprout’ meant I needed to order something to sand down the sides if neck, which was easily done. Even until today, I mostly practice without any amp in a quiet room. I hadn’t imagined how audible the strings alone would be. Amplification does let you hear all the mistakes/extra noise you make clearer, though.
My general attitude going in was that I’d be mostly working on dexterity, scales/learning the neck, and timing. Because of this I wasn’t that concerned with anything sounding great or learning songs.
Fender were offering 3 months of Fender Play, so I got that in July after using TH-cam for basics. The tutorials are way more efficient that wading through youtubers marketing themselves, for a beginners anyway.
I learned that all the progress I make will depend on how much I practice, so the app was simply good for showing me that I couldn’t skip forward without mastering basic techniques. And I’ve learned that a simple notebook 📓 is necessary for me to progress fastest, because there’s no way that I can remember every kernel of knowledge, plus re-articulating adds to my understanding.
I hadn’t picked up the guitar for all of January through to sometime in April after somebody I was seeing told me she thought it was a waste of time. I disagreed, but it still worked in putting me off. That conversation killed my infatuation with her too, so that was an upside.
Somebody super cool told me to get back on it, and in April added me to their SimplyGuitar account. I blew the literal dust off, and was able to compare my basic agility to when I first held it 11 months before, and saw how far I’d actually come. It was harder to see back when I was moving from challenge to challenge. Also, I can hear loads more details in records now. I can hear strum patterns, picture hand movements-love that part.
I revised my left and right hand exercises, and for the last few weeks I’ve been really into getting more agile again.
I can play some riffs that I did through the apps, but can’t play any chord-changing sequences while keeping time. I still consider myself a beginner, and I’m aware I need an in person teacher now, (and will get one soonish,) but I feel like I’m on pace.
Thanks for the lessons. A friend told me this, the best way to learn is to mimic and copy from your fav guitar heros. Learning theory is good but learning the songs will get you playing right away and also will help you learn some theory from learning the structures of the songs rather than "knowing"-example of guitar players i met are the "player" and the "theory guy" id rather be able to play rather than know how something work but not beable to apply it on guitar, i see players who dont even learn to play befor they want to start teaching and that is a very cringy thing to me but ahh i guess everyone is different.

After watching your video for the first time I realized I pretty much practice often in the way you're trying to teach. Although I do get stuck playing some of the same stuff a bit and it's hard to find musicians just in general to surround myself with in my small town.
The ad for this video said don't learn guitar on TH-cam, so I guess I'm not gonna watch this video🤷♂️
