It comes down to personal tastes .Hayley 's voice which is pitch perfect .very uncommon super pure little to none vibralo is tuned perfectly and needs not the dramatic sounds . I happen to love the pure pitch perfect soprano voice with exceptional high range this combonation is very rare in the human voice and cant be taught . her sound puts me with the Gods and heavens above. BTW she is making big bucks
This is absolutely beautiful! It's tragic that some people are so blind that they can't see the beauty in front of them. I do not appreciate know-it-alls.
I've heard many versions of singing this song and this is my favorite one. Every song can be sung in different way as long as it can make people move. Music is no limitation!
When I come back to Hayley, and I must come back, it is to receive, once again, this illustriously powerful and delicate portrayal of an appeal to recognize what is in a loving, caring, and consenting relationship. It is a divine performance.
Absolutely beautiful and totally moving. Goose bumps. Love you Hayley. A New Zealand national treasure. All the live performances and travelling you have done, you are amazing. Thank you. God bless you. Arohanui. xxx
Whatever the technical merits of singers, and I see we have a few purists here, the most important thing you can do with a song, apart from singing it well, is to make it your own. This (young!) girl sings beautifully, with a grace and purity that marks it out as truly individual. The way she places notes so gently is wonderful. Let's hope she doesn't do a Charlotte Church and squander it all...
I am very late to the Hayley party, but, better late than never. This is the most wonderful voice I have heard in years. There is more talent in this girl than any single solo artist I listen to. I love Enya, Sarah Brightman, Lisa Kelly and a hundred more. They all are going to have to sit down now, while I appreciate this beautiful voice and very stunning young woman.
This is just an awesome performance!!! Remeber, it doesn't need to be better than the original (which is not), it's just different. it's just HER interpretation of the song. Her voice is really sweet, and I really love it!!!
How remarkably beautiful your sentiments are! To share, as a child I once was blessed with hearing the Blessed Mother laugh! Her laughter was the sound of beautiful chimes. This occurred in church during Mass where I repeatedly pondered Her clothes ,blue and white comparing them to another almost identical statue. I figured they were both statues of the Blessed Mother, but that was how she changed her clothes. She told me to ask my mother. The second statue was in fact St Margaret.❤
If you understand the story behind this song , you would find that it is about a young girl who is telling her father that she wants to be with a young man that her father does not approve of - so it makes more sense for a very young woman to sing this song than a more mature woman who would probably not be living in her father's house. That is what Puccini probably originally had in his mind , so this young woman's voice fits the original story.
MORE and more listening to Hayley's does transcend the sound of an opera singer .which makes her voice soar above the pack with its crystal clear pitch perfect sound and free from vibralto which distilled down leaves only the purest and finest sound . she has much much soul and heart as anyone as well . does make her belong to the elite group of angels that god has graced us ..
Her voice, Oh My Gosh, so incredible. Imagine being married to someone who sings with such a voice as that!! Hauntingly beautiful, the closest thing to heaven on earth!
I've listened to just about every soprano singing O Mio babbino and with no dis-respect, I think there are very few that sings this song like Hayley Westenra does.
There is no specific way to sing a song or an aria....the point is what it needs to convey...Since when the music language obtained levels or labels? She has made me cry so that is more than enough....I study classical singing for many years now and no classical singer has made me feel like this about this aria....Bravo Hayley
After listening to this a 2nd time ( like finally scratching an itch that you haven't been able to reach for some time) It strikes me there is probably a "back story that might prove interesting behind Puccini's writing of this song.....if I ever find it....I'll come back and share. Such lovely elements from Hayley'sn voice to the chord structure and movement. Just all around perfect AND touching! I know within the opera it has something to do with a Daughter's relation to her Father.
i dont know why this beautiful girl is not a big star??????? she sings many songs so nice!!!! and she have a nice voice and the italian songs she sings very well!!!!!!!!!
every one of her albums went to number one and has best selling classical album debut and is very known and sang with some of the best known opera singers like andrea bocelli josh groban ronan keating etc and is out of the limelight now but made a impact. and in the industry people have said she has one of the best voices theres a reason her debut album was named pure and her classical album called paradiso she worked with one of the best classical movie composers Ennio Morricone some of the music he did for movie scores he added lyrics to as well as hayley writing lyrics for the album and he said hayley is the only singer he allowed to sing to his music
OMG it is here too, CC and Opera is about to go to war, I googled "O Mio Babbino Caro" because I wanted to compare other singers to how Evancho sings it and whether its and opera singer such as Renee Fleming or CC as Hayley Westenra there seems to be some type of war going on. To tell the truth I couldn't tell just by listening to different singers if they are CC or Opera. Have to say Hayley sound very good one of the best to my ears.
Actually, her pitch is spot on, and I've heard plenty of opera singers climbing up to their notes instead of hitting them first time, as well as having vibrato like a pneumatic drill, which is offputting, Some of them hang on to their careers long after they should have been put out to pasture! It's a nice change to hear a voice like Hayley's, even though she is not, and doesn't claim to be, classically trained. She is not racing - she does fine, thanks.
We're more or less on the same wavelength. Carmen was given to me in LP form as payment for a job I did as a teenager, and I still have it nearly 60 years later, and Aida is the only one I have heard at Covent Garden when I visited England after years in Africa In 1960. I also think opera composers like Verdi and Puccini added an extra dimension to sacred music - for which they were criticised - but to me it's fine that young singers also see the beauty of music which is more demanding.
Hayley you are a credit to our country and you sing this beautiful aria the way you feel it. I find it so sad to hear some of the scathing comments made by other people. the well known opera singer who so rudely called her a pop opera singer. sure she isn't really an opera singer per se but she has a lovely voice and she has never lost her sweet and down to earth attitude. we are all allowed our opinions but some of them I wonder just how much they understand music. mmmm.
I read that a few people have issues with her interpretation - no problem with that of course. But certainly the vast majority can recognize that this is just straight up beautiful.
It is interesting to compare Hayley's rendition of this piece with that of Jackie Evancho. Both girls sing this song quite differently, but wonderfully well. They should meet and get to know each other. (Jackie should forget about Lady Gaga).
@sirpolopaul It's not opera singing? Well good! Hayley is a classical-crossover singer, and one of the finest voices in the world. All you opera snobs don't have to listen to it. Go the he-l someplace else.
Thank you for being civil. There's no doubt in my mind that she has had training in basic voice technique, but she has not had classical training. Opera singers teach basic voice as well. I commend her intentions. Mirusia Louwerse is trying to do the same thing, but she is fully trained opera singer. It is still my opinion that this repertoire doesn't suit her thin voice. People can and will disagree and that's ok. You are free to enjoy, but please let others have their opinions.
I think this version is a lot more true to the character from the opera Gianni Schicchi. She's begging her father not to hate her choice of love, basically because she would die without him. I think it sounds a lot better sung with a softer voice.
it's true, it's not opera. but there's something in the sweetness of her young, girlish voice that is somehow more apt for the character singing in the song, than the full voice of a large, middle-aged female opera singer. that's what makes it charming, despite the lack of technical operatic skill.
Ok so I'm pretty sure that Hayley has never really claimed to be a, quote on quote, opera singer. She's extremely talented and she just happens to sing some opera songs and people are hating because of that? Seriously? I mean, yeah, I"ll openly admit to kinda being a hipster, but why is everyone getting defensive about technicalities when it should be about the music?
Of course not she has not been corrupted by opera yet. After all opera is for those who sing and those who wished they could. The corrupt of course are those that wish they could sing like this angel. So they become critics instead. There are more crtitics these days than actual opera stars, of course most of them end up on You Tube.
@1AdrianR I know, but each composer who's now known and whose pieces are part of a singer's repertoire was a revolution ...Each era's composition is a revolution to the previous one...That is the thing about Hayley she brakes the rules, she gives us a new way, her way, she is something new, a very new and lovely combination of the present and the past
the opera Gianni Schicchi is a short one, about 60 min, composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1917. Taken from a hint from Dante's Hell, it is set in a xiii century Florence divided by hate and rivalries. It is a dark comedy: Gianni, clever and jolly, impersonates a dead nobleman to change his will. The aria is sung by his daughter who wants to marry a member of the family of the dead nobleman. He does it because he's not rich enough to give his daughter the required dowry and consent right after.
Like many others, I just watched many versions of this song. This one is the purest, the youngest - I feel it's about an (almost) teenager, naive girl. It's not belcanto - so what? It's just beautiful.
When I first heard Jackie, on AGT last year, and people were going crazy about her, I thought to myself..."is she really that special?" Well, now, after listening to every female classical music singer I could find...child and adult...I've concluded: Yes...she's really that special. Of course, it's always subjective. And it's not just the voice. To me, it's the emotion, passion and delivery, as well. Hayley comes close...as well as Sissel. But again, it is an individual preference.
Many people enjoy listening to Hayley. That's all that matters. Period!
I can't believe she's human. That's what angels sound like
Ever heard of fallen angels?

This is absolutely beautiful! It's tragic that some people are so blind that they can't see the beauty in front of them. I do not appreciate know-it-alls.
I've heard many versions of singing this song and this is my favorite one. Every song can be sung in different way as long as it can make people move. Music is no limitation!
I think this is a gorgeous rendition, i dont think it needs an opera voice to pull this song off, just a good soprano voice which hayley has!
Hayley Westenra is the best soprano in the world with perfect pitch.
She's never claimed to be an opera singer. She has a beautiful voice.
Her voice simply penetrates my heart. It is hard for me to describe in words the feeling. It can only be felt from Haley's voice.
This sounds so pure and beautiful:) I like her voice better than other versions.
When I come back to Hayley, and I must come back, it is to receive, once again, this illustriously powerful and delicate portrayal of an appeal to recognize what is in a loving, caring, and consenting relationship. It is a divine performance.
¡ Hayley eres un Angel, con tu voz llenas de júbilo los corazones de todos los que te damos gracias por existir !!
Magnifique voix naturelle, d'une beauté cristalline ! Un grand bravo à cette interprète .
Absolutely beautiful and totally moving. Goose bumps. Love you Hayley. A New Zealand national treasure. All the live performances and travelling you have done, you are amazing. Thank you. God bless you. Arohanui. xxx
There is a place for every kind of singer in the world of music. This is a very beautiful rendition of this piece, if not opera.
Her version is so quiet..and soothing~~~~ I love it~
A perfect blending of operatic and bel canto styles. Back off naysayers. Pure beauty.

Well said! I've been a fan of hers for a LONG time.
I don't care who sings it cause it never fails to bring a lump in my thought and a tear to my eye.
This is just an awesome performance!!! Remeber, it doesn't need to be better than the original (which is not), it's just different. it's just HER interpretation of the song. Her voice is really sweet, and I really love it!!!
「これぞ 天使の歌声!」と言いたくなる美しい歌声だが、Westenraの容姿の可憐な美しさも併せると、むしろ「これぞ 聖母マリアの歌声!」と形容する方が適切かも知れない。本当に素晴らしい!
How remarkably beautiful your sentiments are! To share, as a child I once was blessed with hearing the Blessed Mother laugh! Her laughter was the sound of beautiful chimes. I'm quite entranced. Love the sweet, clear and pure quality of her voice =)
Love this song and love hayley performing it such a contrast to others that have sung it before...hayley at her best fab
peut-etre , mais vous n'avez , apparemment pas , " essayé " avec la merveilleuse chanteuse norvégienne SISSEL
Her voice, Oh My Gosh, so incredible. Imagine being married to someone who sings with such a voice as that!! Hauntingly beautiful, the closest thing to heaven on earth!
Such a clear, pure, voice, and a beautiful version of this song.
one of the best versions...
Sa voix guérit un coeur de l'audience dans qualité spéciale de voix. Merci!
bravissima voce stupenda
Just love her interpretation.
I've listened to just about every soprano singing O Mio babbino and with no dis-respect, I think there are very few that sings this song like Hayley Westenra does.
simple y sencillamente BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAA. ES COMO ESCUCHAR UN ANGEL . LINDA , CANTA HERMOSO AUNQUE LA MELODIA ES SUBLIME , GRACIAS
This is my favorite version of the song! The fact she's a redhead has nothing to do with that, i think ... :D
She the Voice of a Angel love to hear her sing
Shallowness and happiness are appropriate. This is a comedic aria:) I think she sounds way to sincere.
For now and on I only will listen o Mio Babbino Caro.with You Excelent interpretation.
Thank You.For Your Voiz
such a lovely voice she has! Love it so much
Greatest talent the world has ever known

Hi.
How can you describe "O Mio Bambino Caro", Giacomo Puccini and Hayley Westenra.? One word - DIVINE. Thank You for your video
Grig
OMG, that first time you hear her, utterly amazing
que bonito canta y ami hermana le encanto mucho y poreso la va a practicar la cancion
Maravillosa la voz y la canción.
Bravo. A pure, sublime voice _and_ a fine interpretation from one so young. It's breathtaking.
I could never sing this piece, but I have accompanied some very fine sopranos as they sang it. And no, Susan Boyle didn't bring me here. ;)
this is what we should be listening to, instead of justin fucking bieber.
Ślicznie !
Angelic voice.....wow!!!
verdaderamente hermoso! 😘
simply beautiful.

@FaunsAfternoon Well, there actually are specific 'ways' to sing arias, largely depending on the composer and era.
