Thank you both for doing this video and ride.
I love AZ, and used to live Phx, but had no idea there was such a very cool trail in Tucson.
Now I want to ride that trail!!

Love your practical approach. Yes to propel type drink. 2 water bottles one with one without. Check out Terry long sleeve bike sun shirts with pockets in the back. You will need leg sun protectors too. Riding into sun cross country will suck you dry. Your approach will serve you well. Bring more food and back up water.

Might want to do a week long shake down like RAGBRAI or Ride across S. Dakota to find out what works camping and riding 6 days in a row. Oh and get some Butt Cream and or Okole Stuff and coconut oil works well too. Can't wait to watch your adventure. Yes to bike mirrow. It has saved me a few times.

I have been riding for many years but recently moved to a place where I do mostly road riding. I have found a few things that are invaluable - a mirror on my helmet and my Garmin GPS (530) with radar. It is so very helpful to know that a vehicle is coming up behind you (the radar beeps). The mirror just helps you see how big the vehicle is (on bike paths you can see people coming up behind you which is also helpful because few have a bell or say “on your left”)! I resisted having an electronic gadget on my bike for a long time but I get a lot of piece of mind from knowing what’s behind me. The Garmin also lets you accurately know how far you have gone.
Love your videos and can’t wait to watch your next adventure! I did the entire Katy Trail last summer with a friend and loved it!

That was amazing doing 50 Miles. Way to go keeping active and doing new things . The last time I tried biking when I was deployed to Camp Butmir in Sarajevo. I bought a bike, 50 bucks, and my first try I actually fell over in front of my NCO's. They had a good laugh. I did ride it until my redeployment. I gave my bike away to a local. I haven't been on a bike since then. I might try it again one day.

Impressive! You guys have such a smart and practical method of preparing for the big ride ahead. I'm concerned about the road sections you'll need to stitch together with the off road sections. Bikes and motor vehicles don't mix very well. You literally inspired my 72 year old sister to buy two new bikes, a hardtail and mountain bike and she's been out on the trails in Orange County CA the last two or three weeks riding after a two year layoff due to the pandemic. She subscribed to your channel and can't wait to follow your ride!

You might want to try Tanque Verde towards Mt Lemon before the climb starts. We find the constant pedaling on the flats and avoiding people on the Loop exhausting. The hills give you at least 30% less pedaling on the downhill and make my legs stronger with the uphill.

Wear your delicate bits in gradually...you only have one set. No spares in the pannier.
To set off with just an outline plan is fine. You can work it out in detail as you go. The camping kit you use backpacking will suit for this. Don't be tempted to take too much. Really ration yourself to essentials only. My early bike packing trips around Scotland were torture due to me taking so much stuff that getting up hills was painful.
I like your attitude to fitness. Keep it simple and work your whole body systematically. Injury prevention is important.
Exciting times for you both. I look forward to following your trip.

In 1985, my husband rode his bike across the US for 9 months. He went across Montana on Hwy 2. No Rails-to-Trails in those days! But he said the towns and people were awesome, letting him camp in their fields or a city park. He never stayed in a motel and paid for the trip by taking temp jobs on the way for a few days. Anyway, you are bringing back wonderful memories for him.
Also, if the route takes you close to Oshkosh, NE, the Crescent Lake Nat'l Wildlife Refuge has a beautiful through road. Great biking.
Question: how are you going to get hill training in?
    You always inspire!!

At home, and when I’m touring, I do Yoga with Adriene’s Yoga for Cyclists. On tour, I do it in my tent. I just use a few sections of a Z-rest pad for my knees. I don’t run the video when I’m touring because I’ve got it memorized. I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned getting a professional bike fit. I would highly recommend if you haven’t.

  • @EllenJohn4
    @EllenJohn4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Curious where you found your bikes in the Springs and where you got good bike fitting service? I live in same general area. Also, did you do a segment on how you set up your bikes, ie - style of bikes (touring or cross-style?), frame materials, tire style (gravel grinder versus road cycle). I know you will be riding on a lot of different surfaces including gravel. Thanks for sharing any input. My hubs is severely disabled from a brain injury, and he dreams of riding portions of the GART with me on his e-tricycle. I ride a commuter style and just don’t find the longer distances comfortable, hence the questions above. Thanks for sharing your journey! I will enjoy learning about the trail. We love the Mickelson and Loop trails! Enjoy 👍

Your comment about sore arms and wrists leads me to suggest changes to your bike setup. It could be any number of things, for example, if your seat is too far back you'll be over reaching and putting weight on your hands. Taking a long trip as you are, it may be wise to invest in a knowledgeable bike person to advise on setup.
