    Pausing videos and drawing the frames is such a good idea! I always have trouble finding picture after picture to reference, I can’t believe I never thought of that.

      Haha, it was the same for me. Was tired of drawing the same photos everyone else was drawing. 😅 Also really recommend looking for cool still images of faces in movies, because the lighting's usually very dramatic. 😌

    Dear Louise according to you, you might call this an ugly sketch book, but to me it's a beautiful schetch book When you started drawing the expressions its more beautiful , I gave the video a Big ijke. Thank you for sharing

    It was nice to hear someone else also had similar experience with learning how to draw portraits so my inner dialogue wasn’t too off base. I’m going through the early learning stages now of sketching portraits. I similarly am an over analyzer and over thinking which you finally help me understand why the Loomis method and other techniques never quite were my go-to method. When I took some of those techniques and combined it with my natural tendencies of what I saw when trying to capture an impression of a subject, I actually starting seeing glimmers of improvements in my portrait sketching that satisfied me. So as you say, practice, practice practice [ I need A LOT OF] is very important and also making your own method by combining things seem to me to be the key to help make it click. Thanks for the reassurance 😊 and thanks for sharing your videos. You are a voice of reason I need to hear sometimes . I appreciate it since an art journey is a very solitary journey most of the time.

    I like what you said about being an “ugly sketchbook” kind of person and using it for practice. I am the same way. When I try to be a “fancy” sketchbook person I feel pressured to make it perfect and it becomes less fun. Thank you for sharing!

      A sketchbook shouldn't need to be a performance. Artistic practice and experimentation and development should be allowed to be messy and ugly. 🥳

    Thanks so much for the video! One of the thing I find super interesting to know is the real time you took to make your practice drawing portraits!

    Your tip about watching someone drawing and copying it helped me a lot, I did the old man along with you and it is probably the most likeness I've ever achieved in a portrait, so thank you, keep up the good work!

    Thakyou Louise. I love your drawing style and suggested tips. I need to practice being looser and quicker with my drawings and you’ve inspired me to try that.

    Thank you for sharing pages of your sketchbook. It is always a pleasure to have a secret tour into the head of artists that I like. Your approach to bird sketches gave me the idea to have Sketchbook of Trees. I really want to learn how to draw believable and diverse trees, so having a sketchbook dedicated to that would be great. Plan to start it when spring comes, so I can sketch outside!

      That's an awesome idea! I love dedicating a whole sketchbook to one topic. Not that this one is like that, it's more of a mix, but I recently started a new watercolor sketchbook only for portraits. I think it makes it even more fun to practice.
      Would love to get a tour of your sketchbook of trees when it's ready! 🙏🏻😌

    I think i need to start practising people portraits too. Getting more requests to do then and always held off because people are vain lol......still, I've started to get a little feeling of maybe wanting to start doing some nice messy sketches as you put it. I don't like sketches being too tidy to be fair. I spend a lot of time doing hyperrealism so I appreciate something as lot more loose in sketches and such....

    • @LouiseStigell
      @LouiseStigell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know exactl what you mean. Even when I'm aiming for it to be a messy sketh, I end up sitting there shading for an hour. 😅 Messy sketches are more fun! And I feel the same way: totally envy artists who can achieve likeness in a portrait while still keeping it loose and artistic. That's kind of the goal I'm working towards.
      Would love to see some people portraits on your channel as well! 😊

    I really like your drawings. It looks so nice 😍. I wonder what types of media do you use? Do you use .5mm leads or 2mm leads?
