The U.S. Presidency Is Broken: A Conversation with John Dickerson and Jeffrey Goldberg

  • Can the presidency be repaired?
    John Dickerson, a co-host of CBS This Morning and contributor for The Atlantic, chats with the magazine's editor in chief, Jeffery Goldberg, about Dickerson's recent cover story and its central question of how the office of the presidency is flawed.
    Trump's admission that the presidency is harder than he expected should come as no surprise. "This is a common presidential revelation,” says Dickerson. The pair discusses the emergence of presidential campaigns, the outsized expectations of the American public, and why fixing the presidency is a task that’s bigger than any one person. Stop talking about Trump and watch the video. It's much more about the relationship between Congress, the Presidency and the changing expectations of the office and the changing situation in the world.

      @mwmann 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Rayner No. What is really sad is who the left chooses to proclaim as intellectuals. And continues to cart out to the American people as the end all be all for "factual information." The only problem with that is simply this, it's only factually true as long as you believe exactly as they do. If you call them on their bias, your an ignorant fool or a dumb Trump supporter. For instance, aberrant behavior. If you happen to have a normal moral code. That's right out according to the left. Everything is relative according to each person's life experience. We should no this would eventually create a total breakdown in civilization. Especially when morality is figured into every decision by a sane fair minded man. That being the case, to give ear to anything an immoral or amoral person has to say requires you take what they say with a grain of salt. Never let it take you in. Liberals are like witches, mixing lies with truth. In arguing with them, state your case once and in a calm voice then walk away. Don't argue with them. And remember, God chose the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. And He chose the weak things to lay low the mighty.

    National media has converted the intent of the Presidency from the 1787 Constitution. Originally newspapers were local, but branded and associated US newspapers appeared as early as 1892. Still no national media, so the local papers concentrated more on the congressional campaigns than the presidential. 20th century comes with the wire services and Hurst vs Pulitzer papers. The President is THE ONLY national election. It became fame and fortune for the papers as well as the party leader. Madison, BTW, did not want a two party system as the UK had at that time. He wanted tiny short lived factions and no formal parties.
    On comes the electronic media that came into its own with JFKs assassination. After that our citizenry has been deafened to Congress in favor of the four year beauty contest. More so, since the 70s we have the major networks not only taking sides as Pulitzer and Hurst did, stretching the campaign to two years instead of four months, but then fanning the flames of every elected President constantly asking for his impeachment. -because it was great for ratings. Like the soap operas the networks used to produce and the dark serials they produce now for entertainment. Same corporation BTW.
    However we do not need to listen to reporters or editorial boards. We are smart enough hire who we want. However reporters do have some information we don't. It is important to listen to the whole reporters story, and ignore the editorial sales spin that each reporter is required to do at the direction of their bosses.

      I have no argument for you. I love my country because I love what the constitution stands for. But our wealth has also produced the ugly Americans you speak of. And now a truly ugly American is the President. I also hope your leader does personify your people because I have great respect for him. I liked what he said about the Trump tariffs and how this administration is treating Canada as a risk to American security and a foe vice an ally. America is in it's dark period right now. I will remain part of the resistance.

    • @coolmodelguy6304
      @coolmodelguy6304 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Republicans do not stand for the Constitution or "We the People", and they never have. Look at what happened in the 1930's when they tried to form a coup by using General Smedley Butler to raise an army, only to have the general report them to Congress who in turn did nothing. Republicans have and always will represent the interests of the royalists. Just because they are not called kings or barons or dukes anymore does not mean they have given up the quest for ultimate power over the people. That is why republicans are traitors, they hold the interests of moneyed powers over those of "We the People" . . . always have and always will.

    When they were talking about the huge amount of preparation Nixon did for his China trip and Goldberg said, "Just like today," I _hope_ he was being sarcastic!
    This whole discussion seems to be making excuses for Trump's utter ignorance, Narcissism, incompetence, and dereliction of duty, with no mention of his complete lack of integrity, his unhinged attacks on the press and many others, his obvious intellectual deficiency, his purposefully destructive policies, (both domestically and internationally), his pathological lying, (which Goldberg also excused), his gross un-professionalism and shocking immaturity, his obvious disregard of the emoluments clause, his huge financial indebtedness to a hostile foreign power, his refusal to release his tax returns, his incessant attempts to undermine a federal investigation, his attempts to obstruct justice, and his possible collusion with a hostile foreign power to attack our electoral system and hack opponents' e-mails.
    And when finally mentioning Trump's obvious chaotic, un-businesslike running of his office, Goldberg's reply is, "Well, to be fair, most recent Presidents would have been fired by their board of directors, had they been CEO's of major companies." Oh great, so Trump really isn't any worse than other Presidents. What a crock! Trump never would have been _chosen_ as a CEO of any company with a board of directors!
    This discussion compared Trump favorably or equivalently to Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, GHW Bush, GH Bush, Clinton, and Obama. That is pure BS! Wanna compare Presidents? Okay. How many Presidents have we had who came into the office with at least three aliases? How may Presidents have been sued over a thousand times, and even by _their own lawyers_ ? How many Presidents have declared bankruptcy at least four times in order to cheat their creditors? How many Presidents founded fraudulent "universities"? How many Presidents have used their own "charitable foundation" as a slush fund for their own personal expenses? How many Presidents have clearly demonstrated that they can't think at a higher level than a 12-year-old? How many Presidents have had a shocking and crippling aversion to reading? How many Presidents have praised two of the most dangerous dictators in the world while stabbing all their allies in the back? How many Presidents have used their office to enrich themselves through their properties? How many Presidents have charged over $200,000 rent to a government agency, (the Secret Service in this case), and pocketed at that taxpayer money through their office building or golf course which collected the rent? How many Presidents have demonstrated that they are _incapable_ of considering the consequences of _anything_ they do or say? Give me a "to be fair" answer to those.
    How many Presidents have never been elected, appointed, or hired to any government or public service job in their life? John thinks Trump brought business acumen to the office. No, he was successful in business because he lied to people and ripped people off. He was as crooked as the Mississippi River, and still is. (He would call that "being smart.") But I guess we can blame all that on how difficult the office of President has become, right?
    And at the end, John quoted Trump's, "I alone can fix it," and said people should snicker, "not at _him_ , but at the idea that any President can alone fix it." NO! Trump deserves ridicule for that because he is the only President who would ever _make_ such an immature, ignorant, Narcissistic remark.

    The Atlantic,
    I always like to read the magazine. I have not been reading much of it recently, but I used to pile a couple years to read in a row (and now most of it is gone from my mind), it is a pleasure to see you here on TH-cam. And in particular this talk with Jeffrey Goldberg and John Dickerson, that took me to the cover story. I would like to face you more times!
    What immediately came to my mind was a book by Hedrick Smith "The Power Game" that I read years ago, the issue of the size of government, and in particular the increasing size of it is not new, nor the quality of that such government.
    Based on that long view, but not only, I have reasons to believe that the problem is more of a lack of values, and a lack of sense of direction, of this particular presidency, or of the administration. I had friends like Donald Trump, both psychically and psychologically speaking, and even coincidentally in real estate, and that is not the problem, you seem to want to forgive him, I would do the same. The problem is also not the size of the office (or even the golf), the complexity of all systems have been increasing over the years, and we are ready for that. The problem is the situations, and the conflict of values and interests that arise, the search of principles, good principles, while tackling the situations.
    I would always rather face the Nation or the Atlantic for this matter, than face Volleyball, Basketball or Football, or anything else.
    Without trying to be depreciating of this particular administration, or trying to denigrate it, also I can not talk in constitutional terms, in my opinion, Donald Trump is a military elect, he was meant to be a humiliation to the civilian society. For a long time the military was attempting to pursue this budget, on the grounds of a need to renew the military infrastructure and affirm its readability, and in an attempt to pursue their agenda. He mocks the rules of any civilized society, and he is a Republican conduit, so... the Republicans must go!... We must turn this page!... There is a glut of everything, why short things, only for the sake of speculating!? We were fine with low interest rates, QE, there was even room to increase salaries a bit, why deregulate, and go back to the boom and bust, is it what makes America great again. The USA had the best laws and regulations, why undo everything again and again. Why pass a tax code to come up with tariffs later, it was a wash. Are we going back to the old days of GATT!? There is no other country in the world with such a comprehensive set of immigration laws, it was a matter of enforcing more or less. There is so much to be said so far! The high point of this administration seams to be NK, still to unfold, but is that going to create any growth with the opening of a new market for... "things"!?... It appears to me that the nation should be on global trade and even in the TPP, even because of the global warming related problems and the more frequent occurrence of natural disasters, more cooperation must be flexed, more coopetition, and less unilateral competition. Is this the kind of readiness that this administration is not looking at with entire populations severely at risk. I remember when all countries joined to help Brazil, India, Mexico, or Bangladesh, in the most diverse situations, such as floods of famine.
    I am also here (on my own) studying history of the US and the world, and the US constitution, and really appreciate your more academic, and sophisticated, and long tested approach, and long view, once I came from engineering and am not so familiar with public policy or political science.
    Thanks!

    The executive branch has enormously powerful government agencies under its purview. And these agencies grow and spread just like any bureaucracy does. The executive branch also creates these agencies at a whim. The ONDCP is a fair example of this: One first lady has a "Just say no" program and ever afterward there is an entire executive branch agency which lives on forever.
    On the other hand, the legislative branch has a lot of pro-bono resources available to them that the executive largely does not enjoy. Lobbyists are more than willing to pony up the resources to write bills entirely out of whole cloth for the members of congress to whom they are making donations. And some of those members are more than willing to pass those bills on for vote without making the smallest of changes and perhaps without any real review.

    Interesting point at 27:10. I think it was Hoover who actually had his approval numbers go down in an area where there have been shark attacks. The president has absolutely no control of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or anything else a reasonable person would deem outside the presidents control. What they DO have control o er is how they and consequently, how the government reacts to the event. Despite this, people seem to have an unreasonable expectation that the president is essentially god in his ability to prevent disasters and blame him for tragedies and disasters that occurred on their watch.

    Yes, the job of the President of the US is too big for one person to the detriment of all the government agencies and the American people. How to fix it? That will have to evolve in response to urgent need.

  • @debralegorreta1375
    @debralegorreta1375 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    In terms of "can the presidency be repaired" the discussion carried on the implicit assumption that broke the presidency and does not remotely consider the realm of alternative possibilities. The result is a sense that fixing the presidency depends on staying within those assumption. That's not necessarily the case, and probably not the case.

    It's called the administrative branch. The job is to administrate. I want one of those and I wouldn't mind the cost for a sizable staff as a taxpayer. But...It's also called politics. Does the term antithetical apply here? I still try to understand the reasoning for those folks who voted for Trump and I can't understand it.
    Dickerson has a point to make. You can see where he tries to take the conversation, to a non partisan depiction. Kind of the way a college professor might take the narrative. It's a good talk though.

    I suspect every American mature enough to give it serious thought has long had doubts about the current manageability of the Executive, as it was conceived of in 1775. Most of us alive today have lived our lives with mass electronic communication... radio, TV, internet, and that subset of the internet called social media... and for most of us, America has grown less and less manageable. It has grown exponentially worse since Nixon and Watergate. Americans doubt the ability of our elected leaders to manage the country, and we have grown suspicious of their motives and integrity.

    The president isn’t broken, you are. Just because he didn’t go to law school and learn how to lie like a politician and/or he doesn’t talk like car salesman, you don’t like him actually you despise him. Frankly I feel more secure with this President so much so that I fear for him. I will pray for you, those of us who get it or him are probably praying for you too.

    What is the President supposed to do about an oil spill? Talk about the issue of the utter lack of regulation on the oil and gas industry and force the issue for change. Just a hint.
    As for Trump: The man dishes out constantly, but can't take the heat when it comes his way. Now, that is typical of an insecure bully. All bark, no bite. In this case though, this guy has access to the nuclear codes and Congress, that is supposed to check his power, has utterly abdicated its responsibility in fear of actually having to take responsibility. It's a dangerous combination.
    As for McCain: He chose Sarah Palin as his running mate? Do we really need to say more?

    This conversation feels profoundly useless. No discussion of the roll of money in politics and how that money impacts everything in U.S. politics. It’s the big elephant in the room. The intrusion of money has facilitated the changes in politics spoken about here. Not to mention money’s chokehold on our mainstream. There is nothing new to figure about Trump. It’s the same old class warfare, with all the tools of racism, nationalism, sexism and other isms to help it along. You cant talk about U.S. politics without talking about money.

    I'm nobody. I'm poor. I've never earned more than 30k. I have a Master's degree and years of experience in several different fields, including education, real estate, the arts and business. I've been able to support myself in competitive fields for over thirty years on tattered shoestring budgets. In today's world, this is not enough to qualify me for President, or any other political position. I have many progressive ideas about how to make a better world, but absolutely no power or capital. I would love the opportunity to be a political leader, but it is impossible. Our system doesn't work for idealists who want to be public servants, but it works very well for the naked ambition of those whose only desire is to serve themselves. Until we give our candidates an equal playing field, we will have a system skewed to the rich and powerful, by virtue of corrupting the weak and immoral. I think it is time the FCC banned all political advertisements and instead forced our broadcasters to host hours of political debates before elections so that we could have a well-informed electorate. Voting should be mandatory for all legal adult citizens and easily accessible, with penalties assessed against employers who don't allow their employees sufficient time to vote. It is time for all of the citizens to participate in this democracy and to have a say in molding the future we desire. Our politicians have been listening to only the jingle in the pockets of their supporters, rather than the heartfelt cries of their constituents. If we can take the inordinate power of money out of the picture, we might be able to vote for people that will work for the advancement of society rather than the enrichment of the few.

      Trucker TRAY - So have thousands of small business owners who were being crushed beneath excessive tax burdens. And if Trump were that concerned about money, he'd be taking his executive salary, which he does not. The presidency affords him no advantages over being a private citizen. He could have stayed home in comfort and continued to increase his personal wealth without having to deal with the abuse he takes every day. Something else motivated him to seek office, which was simply - as stated - the desire to put an end to the self-serving corruption of Congress and return the reins of power to the American people.

    Let's just go parliamentary style that's much more representative of policies of the mass of people, fuck this plutocratic system that's based on the mafioso patronage oligarchy of ancient Rome. Didn't work for that old country, won't work now. We're to learn from history. Not repeat it.

    If you would do this every week, i would watch it.
    Though the one guy which should watch this, most likely will watch Alex Jones or Hannity instead while chewing on a burger in bed.
    I wonder sometimes if it would not be better to have only one time presidents with the additional change that his period would be perhaps 7 years AND that every year the people need to vote if he/she should leave early. Basicly we vote a guy in and when he turns out to be a disappointment we vote him out asap which then would start the next election cycle. That may give indirectly more power and importance to congress, which i would not see as a bad thing.
    Also a campaign should never take longer than 3 months. The current nearly 1 1/2 years of campaigning towards constant campaigning what Trump does is unhealthy.
