- We take a walk thru a typical Filipino neighborhood in the city and see the housing, lifestyle and living conditions of the majority Filipino population. Keep in mind that the Philippines has one of the fastest growing economies in the world (around 7%) - Yes much faster than China! It was also rated in a 2015 CNN report as the 5th happiest people on earth so we have a lot to learn from them and their attitude of what it truly takes to be Happy - It is not all about material things that brings happiness - Count your blessings everyday!
Awesome video and highly accurate and informative! You are very respectful to the people and see their inner beauty and kindness. Many thanks and look forward to more videos.
Dan Salas Thanks Dan😀
This guy is great! Raw and informative
I enjoyed this video. Nice sense of humor without being offensive. Thanks for making it real for us Filipinos & for tourists who may want to visit the Philippines someday.
Yep and it is just reality;
Thank you for your diligence in preparing this piece. Good work. Be there in June. Good stuff
No matter where the Filipino people live, they are still the most beautiful people in the world. Also the happiest.
Michael Patterson a recent survey showed them to be the 3rd happiest country on earth. Also they are scrambling to modernize and doing a lot of infrastructure rebuilding starting with the roads so expect to see construction and they have a 6.7% growth rate here.😀
*I'm Filipino and I'm happy ;-;*
thats just YOUR opinion. Because in my eyes. They are just average.
Good stuff m8, thats for the info. You and yours stay safe and well. Not to much sun at the beach Eh!
I think all the residence there are just in renting... they moved to city center to get near to their job then they started make family....so the improvement of the place will depends on the building owners and the a bit organised and somewhat cleaned areas as just initiatives of the renters.
We now use a gimbal to help eliminate shaking in the videos with our Mavic Pro drone and looking for another for our cell and hand camera, you will note in this video that it can make you a bit dizzy. It really makes videos quite stable. Good ones are spendy.
Donald Leske Sr. I have a new cell phone with Optical Image Stabilization, so the shakey video should be improving.
Ah cool, well just was hoping you were open to ideas. ; ) Like your videos sir. Been married to my Filipina for 48 years and been in the places in your videos and I encourage you to continue. We will be in Manila, Bacolod, Cebu and Mactan area Oct 14th-30th. Please be kind and check our poor video and give us a thumbs up and kindly comment; th-cam.com/video/rYtGfTz-ng8/w-d-xo.html - We have many such videos with the hope to inspire others who are able... to also give from their heart. :)
I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting. I have subscribed and am looking forward to catching your follow up vid's
This is really informative. I can see why some of the young girls like foreigners to get away from their poverty.
Good intro video for those who have never been to the PI.
Nice, honest commentary! I miss the place (grew up there from 1960-1977). Really enjoyed it. I can appreciate your point-of-view because I have been away for 40 years... I can appreciate both points-of-view.
Point of view is important when you live here and the longer I am here the more I think I understand - at least I hope I understand :-)
very good video
Reynaldo Nacion thanks for the comment!
Go to the province you can see lots of paradise.
alicia marshall that is why i live on bantayan island :-)
I was there 40 years before you while serving in the navy.evryone simply heard us ex navy guys talking and telling our stories of the Philippines and simply copied us.you will never know the romantic and exotic Philippines I knew.
I kinda do, bak. I spent '84-'89 sa dito.
This is a must-see video to people planning to visit the Philippines for the first time. At least you have an idea how the real Philippine looks likes.
That is real life but there are many places where it is cleaner and not so many people; Any city in the world is polluted due to the high number of people in an area;
Seems no different than when I visited Indonesia around this same time frame. The people are so warm and friendly there as well. I'm planning on retiring in the Philippines in 2020.
Yes you really don't have to worry about Filipino's treating you well. The vast majority are honored that a foreigner will even talk with them. Of course everywhere on earth you should be on your guard for the one bad apple but don't be obsessed with worry about Filipinos they are naturally very warm and helpful.
well.... maybe not 2020, right? Covid surely put the kibosh to that (speaking for myself also)
@@surveyguyor8958 covid has obviously put a damper on things but never the less, I'm going as soon as travel restrictions are lifted.
@@IronmanLIIII0 See you on the plane, haha. Me too. One thing will be nice, the prices of rentals have dropped. I know they will raise, but I'm hoping they don't jump them up. I don't see a mass return to the Philippines. I think a lot of expats actually may not go back. So many of them really don't like the PI. they are only there for the cheap prices. So when they left back home, maybe they will just stay. Here's to wishful thinking. cheers!
Very interesting and informative for someone like me who's never been to the Phillipines but would like to. Thanks!
This is part urban place in the Philippines. You should go and see some subdivision and first class area etc comparable or even better in USA or advance countries
Joseph Bumanlag Yeah I have been trying to put together a video on the upacale subdivisions however they have guards and you can't just walk in and start videoing. I will keep trying. I did meet a condo sales person the other day so if she will give me a tour maybe I can put that out on youtube.
This is a real typical family it means in general and very common what you said is about only 10% to 8% of Filipino this is the 50% to 60% of Filipino and less 30% to 25% is below poverty line hope you understand
This looks very trashy
I have seen much nicer and not just in gated communities
@@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 Can't even get google street view in those area's. I know If I lived in those area's I wouldn't have it either.
Thanks for the walkabout.
max miser you're welcome
Hi
I found this interesting thanks
I have a theory about the raised cess pit, with torrential rain and resultant flooding you dont want standing water on the top that could potentially flood and fill the pit up
Does that sound plausible?
Sibat 777 yes it does and they have flooded twice in 3 years!
3500 for a houses damn I pay that every two months
I pay 1300 a month for an apartment .
Yes but you can get to a restaurant and have dinner ate in 1 1/2 and here
Thanks for your video, very nice informative, I went to luzon 3 times already but maybe this time I will go to Cebu
Javier Cortes there's a lot to do on cebu if you like the outdoors
Thank you good job.. I am from the USA..
That looks like the place where my aunt and family lives, it's not the worst place. It's actually really pretty if you look a it in a way. It's not that bad and I miss it.
*I wanna go back to the Philippines ;-;*
Mr. Waffles Yes it is a good place, my brother in law is raising his family there and they are doing very well, every few months they save money and make upgrades to their house.
That's an old town and quite laid back. Feature also some new housing which are more modern and organize communities/subdivisions being developed for the new generation
Thanks for the feedback. I will be looking for a subdivision to video. I know we have some nearby.
I think that place is an informal settlers
Yes try to visit some other places
GREAT VIDO , GOOD JOB
Very informative.
Well you said so much in just one video. Congratulations, this is one of the best intro videos that air have ever seen of the Philippines. You really nailed it on many topics in such a short time. Great job!
Kiana Foster Thanks for the great comments :-)

This video reminded me of something important towards the end. It may not affect you, but I stopped using powdered laundry soap years ago! Some folks I know go even further, choosing dye, and fragrance free liquid. There aren't a lot of choices at regular stores(S&R has most everything COSTCO carries), but most places have at least liquid Tide. I forgot about my "sensitivities", and ended up with some pretty awful crotch rot! Be sure whomever does your clothes uses LIQUID, even if you have to buy it, and supply it personally. Even if you don't have issues at home in the west, remember they are washing BY HAND, and likely with luke warm water at best! YMMV! Loved the flow and content of the video, btw! You're no Marlin Perkins, but I found your work interesting, and informative!
Scott Triplett In the US I used liquid detergents however on Banyayan island they are not available. We do have a USA size and style Electrolux washing maching and it has a extra rinse cycle which we use to get the powdered soap additives out as best we can. If you notice on the hand washed clothes there is often a whitish residue/detergent filler left on the clothes. We really like our washing machine😊
Glad you're not experiencing any discomfort! Our place is not as remote as yours, but we still try to load up in Cagayan at S&R when we trek that way! Stores in Pagadian also have the liquid soap, but for a bit more, of course!
Thanks for a very informative and nice video. You are right as how those typical living areas in the Philippines are. This is a 3 th world country and most of the people really cannot afford to live even in middle class subdivisions in towns or cities. Although they are very happy for what they have! I`ve passed this street several times and great to see your folks live there. Couples for Christ is a big part to count your blessings! :)

Looking for episode n:o 2...but be careful in a 24/7 guarded subdivisions, the guards necessary don`t look filming very positive i
f not even "through their AK-47" :)
Leo Löppönen Thanks for the tip - I will ask permission :-)
Very happy? No. They just know how to cope better. I've lived quite a bit of that life. Even when my dad was lawyer and mum was teacher in Cebu 11 years ago, life was very hard. We sort of lived through rent and it looked a bit like those run down houses in some of those in the barrio. We tried saving to put more into building a house in one of the suburbs but commodities like food and other basic needs were expensive and electric bills are ridiculously expensive there.
Add to the fact that my parents earn very low in income in spite of their professions. No, it wasn't glorious living in that life. The government should've at least restructure housing system there to make it more affordable and have better quality at the same time. Instead, they bull shit around hording people's tax money for their own greedy lives.
I hear your words but yes they are happy to a high degree and cope very way with what they have; Go to the south in the USA ; You will not see the smiles or be greeted as a friend;
Even the gate to my own home is cut and welded in so that I have to duck to get into my own home. Typical of many areas. Thanks for sharing.
this was very helpful, ivebeen looking to leave the U.S and recently found some interesting info on phillipines. i do have one question? what kind of dangers should i be aware of?
Scammers
Dude stop saying typical. Where youre from the same exist. Good neighborhoods and bad.
But they are doing the best they can.
Pay for their septic. This isnt typical.
typical comment
Thanks for posting this video. I'm actually considering moving to the Philippines in a few years, God willing. I'm from NYC. Just wondering if you could tell me more or less how much I should save up before I move in order to be able to live comfortably?
TristanDmarco For my wife and I we spend about $ 1000 per month for everything, however we live in the province (Bantayan Island) and not in Manila or Cebu city.
If you are a Filipino citizen and want to buy property and build a house (with sort of/basic USA amenities) you will need at least/minimum $10,000 and it will be a hybrid filipino/american style of about 50 square meters or 500 square feet. For a more larger house with very modern amenities then $60,000 to the sky's the limit. The materials cost here are about the same as the USA your savings is mostly on the labor. Also the province/country is lower building costs too. Buying a house is ridiculous because they almost double the building cost and most used homes are not maintained or even built to last (cracked walls usually). Let me know any other questions you may have.
Been here 10 yrs; My living expenses for a entire yr is ~$2,500, not counting food and entertainment; Food can be very cheap and not sure what entertainment is to you, but there is very little to spend money on here other than people watching or some low low key sight seeing; Many just turn into fat old drunks here; I ride dirt bikes :)
Flights between island are in the ~$50 range? Beer is only ~70 cents a 12 oz bottle? No cars are really needed; You can get a ride of some sort on about ANY road; Nice restaurant meals ~$10? The exchange rate is $1 to 54P currently and expected to stay that way for the next yr or 2? Inflation is hitting now but for anyone with any money, it is just not a problem really;
--
I guess I could spend a thousand a month but i don't really know how unless I got a very very expensive home somewhere?
Home rental - $110 - 2 bedroom APT
Elect bill - ~$25
Water bill - $2
internet - $25
Visa - $35
That is all my monthly bills with my visa the second highest cost and it has come down in price since I arrived; My dirt bikes cost much much more with all the riding I do;
I know this is 3 years old, but Tristan, you can spend as much as you like. Some foreigners have no problem spending their $3,500 pension every month. Others don't spend over $600 (just relaxed life, after paying for a small house).
Good video content. I have seen all you show and I'm not much interested in Cebu area but if I were, I would subscribe to your channel. It could be Danao just off the main highway as it looks much the same. The small motorcycles where you shift gears also have centrifical clutch, they will take off in any gear but it will wear the clutch out if too high a gear. The gears on the centrifical clutch chain driven motorcycles are constant mesh so you don't need to disengage a clutch when shifting, just let off the gas, if anything. The gears are usually all "down" and there is a gear indicator on the instrument cluster. "Hand Clutch" motorcycles usually have a premium price. Automatic scooters have a CVT belt driven automatic transmission. Good luck with your channel!
As you said, they do have building codes, it's just not strictly implemented. This area you've been to may be a squatters area where people living there don't own the land. They build however they want and the building officials don't care. That's why you see those unsafe/unsanitary water or electric lines all over the place and houses built close to each other, no setbacks whatsoever. Problem with squatters - politicians such as mayors, councilors, etc. tolerate these BECOZ they are their potential VOTERS during elections. It's a sad state of affairs of Philippine politics. The population bears the brunt of their selfish decisions particularly the indigent folks.
You need to get a stabilizer for your camera, I've have a headache from all the bumpy video.
I have one now😊
The previous governments did not have any support for its people like cheap decent housing, postal services, quality roads, sewage disposal systems and garbage disposal systems. People had to do everything by whatever means they can making all structures and systems substandard. The government was too busy with corruption. It ruined the Philippine culture and society and environment. They have to spend their thoughts and energy on putting food on the table so animal welfare is not that important.
Live out in the province much better (fresh air and pretty landscapes) but the disadvantage to that is you can't get Mac Doo or Jollie bee whenever u feel like it lol 😂 This video sure looked alot like Consolacion Cebu... Thanks MPOBICP
it is Consolacion - Thanks for the comments :-)
Aheezy Da Islander, I agree I spent 1 week in Cebu city and 1 week in Bohol and the the difference is night and day, I truly enjoy the country over the city, but what an experience, I enjoy the time I spent there with a lovely lady I meet online.
The Ahern Family
The disadvantage is not that you can't getr a Mac Doo but you can't get a Burger King Whopper ! lol
Said that, and getting serious, if you get sick over there, like an emergency (accident,, blood loss,appendicitis, food poisoning- somebody shoots you, you DIE there. Pure and simple. Even In Boracai rich people have died in the past, cuz if the weather is bad, you can have all the money in the world but no helicopter will be able to pick you up. and bring you to Makati Med or St Luke.
Their is absolutely no businesses in the providences other than the small local guys selling stuff; Recently, they have even stopped gasoline sales out there;
--
About all towns\cites look the same; I've been on ~10 islands and all look basically the same right down to the BRGYs names; The biggest difference is the look of the sidecars on the trikes;
Great video! I'm about to watch the rest. Thanks.
That's so sad that garbage and water stay's mosquito love's it so many sickness comming out now,hope the city are going to educate them how to tidy up.
there's a lot of poverty here in the USA also. Go to downtown Los Angels, Parts of Oklahoma, Seattle. Heck a lot are what you call hidden squatters but more open now .. Interesting isn't it?
Chris and Jenna Aguinaldo Yes I agree. I lived in Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and actually every state has like you said poverty and pollution.
Poverty in America? The state of AR where I am from has 500,000 families of 4 living there! That is just 1 southern state; They just will not quit electing rebumpkins! They are brainwashed by the media is what I tell my older sister who talks the same as 30 yrs ago when I left there; She lives in a collapsing mobilehome;
This is more of a congested city area. A country video would look just as humble but at least be spacious and show off how fertile the country is.
Michael Brown check out the video "The land that time forgot and paradise found" that has some country.
To make? Not sure about that xD because rent is around 300$ for a decent 2 bed and 2 bath place and 700$ for a 4 bed nice home rent.
Bible Flockbox Yes in a decent subdivision those prices are what you will find.
of course this is a province area
sawajiri100 Actually this is in Cebu City area the city is Consolacion.
Consolacion on north of city cebu. but not yet develope. but if you go my location (Manila is different on your video) caloocan. quezon city. bonifacio global city. marikina. alabang. makati. pasay. mandaloyong. is fully development
many pilipino is lazy thats whay many is poor. only on the person to be come a.rich not goverment.
sawajiri100 the education system did not give them the knowledge to rise above their situation.
Education in the philippines is rich. more school even in province our govrrment is focus on edication. your foreigner, you have no idea about the real problem of the philippines.
many nation have a problem for poverty thats why... dont say about the real problem of the philippjnes. becuase any you say or upload on any website your stament not help. sorry for saying that bro.
Hello po..
This may be a silly question but is there police corruption like Tijuana, Mexico? I went often for shopping and the dentist but I got kidnapped , tortured and robbed by the local police.
Patrick Carr Not since President Duterte took office. He is a no nonsense law enforcement type. I am sure somewhere in the philippines there are bad cops but I would say the vast majority are honest and helpful. The only place I will not go is to Mindanao due to terrorist kidnappings. Also big cities like Manila and Cebu city have a few bad areas like any major city in the world has.
one thing i like about philipines ,is they do not use the police to make money of people driving vehicles, i drove in ,macton island , cebu . bohol , cebu to dumagete and back and never saw a cop pull anyone over . you dont see police much . they do check the scooters , but unlike the states ,where you have to watch your mirror and hiding places for cop cars ,looking for an excuse to treat you like a atm machine .
and god forbid you drank a beer .
i went to the beach bars ,had a few beers and drove home , no worrys about police road blocks etc .
it is not a country with over bearing regulations and a,nanny state trying to control you
like kids in the usa needing a lincence permit to sell lemon aid from a plastic table off thier driveway .
the only liberals are foriengers . so religion free speech is respected .
@@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 Corruption with the police is just as bad even with Duterte elected as new president. But it's mostly due to small issues like paying the police a small fee if you got caught without a licence. And yes the police brutality is still there.
The way they live absolutely astounds me visited in August 2017 never saw so much filth grunge and garbage as I did when I was in the Philippines
mike swartz Have you ever been to the poorer side of towns in the US. Not much difference, I lived in Memphis and it was just as bad except in Memphis you fear for your life everyday and in the Philippines I actually feel safe (not in the slums of Manila) in most areas.
My Paradise on Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines lol. Never been to Memphis but you are correct the Poor Side of Manila is absolutely heartbreaking that's what I did see when I was there anyways I do enjoy your videos I always learn lots God bless you sir and take care
Cleanliness is mandatory everywhere in Manila except where the garbage mountain is. Even people where poverty is located their Barangay are instructed to clean everyday. You’re in an area that needs more help cleaning up. You go outside the city houses are beautiful and well taken care of. Peace ✌🏼
What? Nothing is mandatory in the Philippines except air and rice
Are you sure you're from the philippines? Manila is one of most dirtiest city in Philippines, and the top 10 in the world.
Every country has it good, bad and really ugly part. People sometime watches videos of others countries and usually see the horrible part and start making assumption about the country. We have some neighborhood within the united state that looks worst than a third world slum..
Where ever country you came from sir you should also show it to the world.
I did if you look at some of my earlier videos when I was in the US.
The US dumps pollution in its rivers too especially in coal mining states and old factory towns.
Bruce Villa when i lived in Tennessee the creek behind my house was filled with old tires, plastic bottles and assorted trash. We definatly have the same problems in the US.
Is burning trash an issue for your neighborhood?
Marty Gray We actually have trash pickup on Bantayan Island 2 times each week so trash burning is not an issue, however many people do sweep up the leaves in their yards and burn them, that is a very old Filipina tradition where the lady of the house gets up early and sweeps the yard.
Nice Video

what is the centipede and snake situation like in the Philippines ? Esp. the centipede !
BB Kush I see a few centipedes from time to time mainly if I am working in the dirt around old wood or bamboo laying on the ground and sometimes in the coconut trees where the palm frons connect to the trunk. On Bantayan we have 2 kinds of snakes both non poiseness, the wolf snake and pythons.
BB Kush In the most of the Philippines they also have the Philippine cobra, but not on Bantayan island where I live.
@@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 That's interesting no Cobra's there. I wonder if there are any banded sea skrates in the waters there. I've swam with them (SCUBA) around Panglao. Very deadly. they are just as agile in the sea or on land.

looks like a rat infested place. do they have rats there ?
I know this is old John, but yes, many rats in the Philippines. When there are floods, they are everywhere. They are big there, like cats. Their cats actually are not big (skinny, not much food) but the rats are huge.
@@surveyguyor8958 very unsanitary

This a pretty good video on this country; I've been here 10 ys; It is a drop-off from any 1st world country in many ways but you gain in many many ways from the same 1st world countries; in living life here; It would take me 3 days to explain all the good\bad points; I've been here 10 yrs and can not live in a 1st country ever again; Just too many rules and laws there along with the high cost of basic living;

Santo Niño is an image of the baby Jesus; That statue is not an idol; Ferdinand Magellan gave this small statue to 'Rajah' Humabon of Cebu when he landed in the 1521; This was the start of Christianity here; The original image is still here on display along with the cross of Magellan; Seeing that cross I had heard about my entire life, was really a moving event for me;

The Philippines were the leading country in this part of Asian after the USA gave them their freedom right after WW2, but they went static somewhere through the yrs and have not progressed much in the last several decades; In comparison, the USA has not progressed since the turn of the century either and we are actually regressing now due to our rebumpkin leaders that the south keeps electing through their ignorance;

Cristian Tasker did you meet thru a website?
GOOD CONTENT BUT YOU NEED A GIMBAL
This is the low income people.
What do you consider low income? The average annual income for a family of 4.5 people is about 267,000 pesos ($5340 year, $445 month). I would guess most of the people in that neighborhood are about average or lower middle class.
You went to a squatters area you should research well before coming there
3rd world is a term used back in the cold war.... we are not in the third world.... check wikipedia...
nestor panganiban I understand it meant the non-aligned nations, however it has morphed into being synonymous with lesser developed nations and that is how I was using it.
The term 3rd world meant you were not an allied or axis power back in the time of WW2; When applied today, it means a country left behind; probably very poor, very uneducated; Is that so bad really? No but it leaves you a target for the educated to exploit;
The term 3rd world is now replaced with "developing countries".
The previous governments did not have any support for its people like cheap decent housing, postal services, quality roads, sewage disposal systems and garbage disposal systems. People had to do everything by whatever means they can making all structures and systems substandard. The government was too busy with corruption.
