I visited my grandparents out of state last summer. There was a mantis in their garden that stayed in the same place for 3 days.

Is there a difference between tegmina and elytra? Mantises are far more badass than roaches, is that why their wing-shields get a different name?

So both mantids and roaches have tegmina, while beetles have elytra! Tegmina are still fairly flexible, more leathery. You would be able to bend the forewings of roaches and mantids. Elytra are very sclerotized and rigid, not very flexible 🪲

You have made me hate the standard big green lawn and I’m okay with that.

I suggest to get your pronunciation right before lecturing people about proper taxonomy. It's religiosa not reliJiosa. Americans butcher those Greek and Latin words so much and so casually it's sometimes unbelievable. I heard Morgan freeman butchering "cephalopoda" on big budget documentary. I never watched single episode of that series after that even though apple thre millions on it. Anyway I like your videos I just always point that out after years of being taught proper pronunciation.

@@kokroucz hey no worries - always appreciate the feedback! I remember going to a mothing convention back in undergrad and hearing someone speak on how everyone pronounces “Zale” completely wrong. I understand how it could get annoying after some time 😂
