Do you think Hertz gave up too soon on EV's or did they make the smart choice? Here's another video explaining the price crash that might give more insight: th-cam.com/video/-m3VKaCbDBk/w-d-xo.html

From Hertz’s viewpoint, I think they didn’t correctly gauge the number of fender benders and the resulting frequency and cost of repairs. Even the auto insurance companies have detected a higher rate of collisions in the first 2-3 years of ownership of a first EV for a driver. I think this is due to the greater acceleration and the linear response of the acceleration to the go pedal (there is no need to rev up the engine to develop torque - peak torque is reached very quickly). It takes a while to adjust your inputs to how the car responds. Cost is due to limited parts supply and few mechanics who can repair EVs.
From a renter’s perspective, they really need to not require renters to return the EV with a certain % of charge. I needed to rent a car for less than a day (to drive from a funeral home to a cemetery and back), but due to a tight schedule, I didn’t want to bother with finding (not familiar with the area) and using a rapid charger before returning it between dropping off passengers at their hotel and dinner, which was only a very short walk from their hotel. I didn’t need the car after dropping them off, so I certainly wasn’t going to pay for costly inner-city parking. So, though I was offered an EV for the same price as a mid-size ICE sedan, and I am curious about EVs, I opted for the ICE. Had there been no requirement to return the vehicle above a minimum state of charge, I’d have chosen the EV. Rental lots can certainly charge them on their lots, even if it’s only level 2.
