There’s definitely a point in which a musician becomes more valuable as a legend than a living person that is going to fade into obscurity because they are unhappy with fame or refuse to get clean. Also, a lot of musicians seem to die right after they hit their peak and start on the downhill slide. It’s certainly possible that this has (and still is) been exploited by record companies.

FYI; I worked as a studio technical engineer at both Westlake Studios and Larrabee studios in West Hollywood late 80's through early 1990's. I saw Michael Jackson unclose several times. When people are in the spotlight, but are also rebellious..they get into different moods. They have the ability to reach people at a tap, but also in the motivation and/or momentum in reaching people for whatever purpose, they dont think about how they'll look crazy and will have to jump off everything they said before, when they speak in that moment. Its a long and intricate explanation. I dont even think i can convey well enough. People think faster than they can speak. Usually when you see crazy people popping off they arent crazy. Its very difficult to articulate your thoughts, which make sense, in speech. You have to always consider people's attention-span, ability to understand, and when you're already paranoid because you're human in a spiritual battle that manifests itself in the real world...its difficult. Its frustrating. But all the while, and most of all - its SELFLESS. Appreciate those that go against the norm. Because chances are that you are too. You just dont have the audience to be embarrassed in front of or superiors that will disappear you. Not to mention a family to protect because they're human too.
