I live in Cleveland, OH. Ohio is terribly gerrymandered with 26 of 33 seats in the Ohio senate being held by Republicans, and 67 of 99 House seats are held by Republicans.
Over 70% of these seats are held by Republicans, but Ohio is nowhere near a 70% Republican state. Trump won Ohio in 2020 by 8%.
I have several of the same complaints as the people who want to create the state of Jefferson do. Columbus does not represent me or my area's interests.
Should Cuyahoga County, which has 1.3 million people, be able to form our own state?

@Menacing Ship The Constitution says states cannot be created from other states. (Article IV).
Even if California AGREED to allow for the creation of Jefferson, any state in the union could challenge it and take it to the SCOTUS. Jefferson could only exist with a change in the Constitution or outright SCOTUS corruption.
      Article IV:
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Fast forward 150 years, there is no way something like this is going to be allowed to happen. As a Californian , we should do our best to make it a better place . If it's true that it is not possible to separate then we should take advantage of the connections we have on the inside . As for the communities we should learn to be literate in Finances and law . We would move mountains when channeling our energy to create physical wealth such as clean water and work with nature to create more places that need water , more gardens not lawns , give land back to the natives , learn from the natives, remodel old buildings to place the homeless. No more complaining . No more division . Only solutions ! Enough with this Republican this and Democrat do that . We all have something in common , that California is in a hole , do we want to to dig it deeper with the fighting ? Or do we want to organize and crawl out of it ?

Baird is right. They're not poor. They've been impoverished by the state's environmentalist policies enacted by people that see themselves as noble stewards of nature yet live lives entirely separate from nature and reality. California gets it's water from Mount Shasta. Separate mount Shasta from the state of California and California would be a debtor state to the state of Jefferson. It'd take a small army to cut the water supply off from Mount Shasta to lower California and Jefferson could effectively have their demands met.

State succession is fascinating. Especially with the larger States. Can a State as large and diverse as California really fulfill the needs of it’s people? It’s possibly a microcosm of if the Federal government was really the only legislative government and State governments were more so “local councils” in affect. I’ve moved around a lot so the argument if you don’t like it, move to another State is not a big deal for me. But some folks have real roots somewhere, they love where they’re at. They would rather fight to make it more the home they want.

In effect, the state of California must give permission for the counties to officially secede from the union. It is the only federally legal way to form a new state that is comprised of an already established state.
Until this happens, their last methods of secession would have to happen a la West Virginia, California declaring secession from the Union in which the State of Jefferson would then be allowed to petition for Statehood to the Union.

@@Landad_ Yes I know. They want to secede from Cali, however Cali essentially has to give them permission. Until Cali does this, the State of Jefferson's only means of seceding from California lies upon California choosing to secede from the USA; as they would no longer be beholden to federal or state law the State of Jefferson would then be able to appeal directly to U.S. for statehood.
This is essentially my previous comment just reworded and with extra nuance.

    idk .
#1. I think you guys are looking at this as people with already strong opinions who are heavily involved in politics/following politics etc, but the vast majority of regular people are not like that, alot of people dont live & breath politics& that makes their views & understanding of things more malleable& able to be altered when encountering solid arguemnts they cant refute, like most people may have a deeper level grasp on a few core views that they care about, if even that, but if you asked then to argue for a certain policy or position alot of people on many things would only have a more surface level grasp & wouldn't necessarily be able to effectively address solid counter arguements, alot of people are just more undecided or just don't have enough of a nuanced understanding of a topic to fully defend a certain view so hearing a debate &depending who is more convincing in it could really make someone question or shift their position on it...not necessarily for like general overarching poltical tendencies but for the specifics of differnt positions & if enough of these are questioned it eventually shift someone over to left or right
    &
#2. also, it's not like ONE single debate is going to change someone's mind, but I think being exposed to certain arguements& counter arguements over the course of a number or debates can start to lead to a more moderation of ingrained views & over time(it could be relatively short for some or longer for others) actually shift someone's opinion completely.
so I don't really think this is true. I think online the right dominated in making it APPEAR like they have the winning arguements by debating young college kids who mostly don't articulate good arguements to support their opinions or even know how to defend them in a debate, but if the left could get better at using these kind of tactics & debating & such It would really even the online rhetoric in a way that I think could be really helpful.
I even went through a period of total question everything I believed after a kind of right-wing TH-cam pipeline but after like a year of feeling politically homeless & really working through a nuanced reasoning for my positions, & definitely encountering the left wing TH-cam sphere was helpful in balancing the right wing views that were overwhelming the feeds initially& bringing me back to reality a bit, I can more confidently understand how all those ben shapiro & crowder & so on arguements don't work & are hypocritical& so forth& can call my self a left/independent person & argue for my positions without questioning everything & wondering "who" was right in these debates & policies

It’s true though. It won’t happen for the next 100 years, unless D.C/Puerto Rico (or both) are made into states and a red congress tries to even the balance by making Jefferson, which Trump won in super majorities in 2016.

I live on SJ....I'm moving up to Jefferson. Because the state of Jefferson represents the way I want to live....the local government around here doesn't represent me any more. I think after covid all this will change....people want to leave the bayarea in droves. All I ask is the other flat landers don't come too and bring their stupid politics that I'm trying to escape from.

It's a bit delusional of these people to believe that both Oregon and California would be willing to give up thousands of miles of valuable coastline 😂 I'm sure if they would have a higher chance of succeeding if they felt less entitled and opted for smaller and more inland territory. Even then, they're delusional.
