Me and my buddy would crank this out with the speakers hanging out the windows, sure doesn’t seem like 36 years ago, good times though. Greetings from British Columbia
Van Halen owned the early 80's. Their live shows were Killer. Packed out everywhere they went. Literally were an opening act, and within a few months the feature act at Stadiums. Some bands refused to have them open for them because it was so high energy
Thank you thank you thank you guys! You really got me or anything off the first few albums. You should try Eruption live if you wanna hear crazy guitar
RIP to Eddie Van Halen. Diamond Dave knows martial arts it's why he can kick high and being very limber on stage presentation. VH was a true rock band and since the devastating passing of Eddie, rock will not be the same without him. EVH was a guitar wizard, and an innovative genius and he'll be truly missed in the music community.
If you listened to enough Van Halen songs you will hear all the songs in his solos just little bits and pieces of them and then you'll understand with the solos are all about it's not just random playing. Best damn guitarist that can't read music and self-taught a gift from God.
Earlier (rawer) VH is the best, as with most bands, before they get too far in the clutches of the label. They were already getting more commercial with this one, IMO. Runnin with the Devil, Unchained, Down on Mean Streat, Jamie's Cryin, Everybody Want's Some, Eruption/You Really Got Me Now are great examples of their dirtier, more auspicious beginnings. RIP Eddie🙏
I found some videos on Bitchutes of the audio of Eddie playing at party or a bar in San Bernardino !! from 1976, unbelievably better than I ever heard him play ! You could hear the confidence in his playing and I never heard these songs before and it was the most technical and extremely difficult guitar playing I've ever heard and he was flawless. It gave me chills because I was thinking he was probably only 18 or 19 years old and he was absolutely killing it and I know that those people at the party never heard anything like that before back then.
You just watched a generational virtuoso on guitar. Eddie VanHalen (the guitarist) was widely known as one of the best rock guitarists of all time. PLEASE watch his live version of “Eruption” to be blown away!
Eddie’s solo at 3:16 is one of my favorites. It’s low and sultry. He doesn’t need all those high notes. ❤️ it’s just way too short for me. More. More. More.
I credit Van Halen for my wanting to play the drums. I remember vividly the first time I seen this video being 10 years old and how much fun they looked like they were having and made it look like it was larger than life. Brings back so many memories.
Watching Lex's rock/metal journey the last 3 months, one thing I've learned is Lex's love for guitar. I wait patiently for Lex to discover the greatness of Eddie. The hardest and rawest VH is pre 1984.
Yeah my wife and I say that she was always a headbanger she just didn't know it yet. I have seen a lot of headbangers but none as adorable as she is at doing it.
Agreed! 1984 was probably their pinnacle with DLR, but any of their other DLR albums are better..I can never really choose a favorite..Maybe "Fair Warning"...or "Women and Children First"...." Diver Down" is pretty good too...and then there is VH1...VH2 is also really good....see what I mean

True story. When Runnin' With The Devil hit the radio in '78, disco might as well have died right then and there. Other bands thankfully held the torch through the 70s (Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, etc.), but once this band hit it big, hard rock guitar was BACK, and in a big way. @@johnhulse6496 Debatable; just a different era/sound, that's all. Eddie built his own guitar in '78 and was an innovator in his own right, appealing to the next generation of hard rock fans. No disrespect to the amazing Mr. Page, but EVH was my generation's guitar legend. 🤷♂
@@johnhulse6496 The difference is Page comes from the line of guys like Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, Frampton, etc...all from the blues based background. Punk Rock was gaining steam with the Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones....But here comes Eddie, with his own unique style that was in it's own corner
I saw them on this tour. They didn't have all the flying around the stage in the show, but it was such a face melting experience. Eddie Van Halen was one of the best guitarists to ever play.
I second Warpiggeh's comment, you should check out Eruption live. Eddie was a seriously talented artist, and I suspect Lex would really enjoy it. Eddie could truly show you what an electric guitar is capable of. Most of Van Halen's stuff is entertaining as hell though.
Everyone's first foray into VH should be Runnin' With the Devil. The intro just sets up the whole experience. That said, Hot for Teacher is a great video, and when you do some Sammy Hagar fronted VH, Black and Blue is a song I think you'd both love; Lex for the sound and Brad for the lyrics.
One of my favorite songs I remember being 12 when this came out I had a huge ass boom Box took like 8 d batteries. Anyway I remember listening to 1984 (van hallen) while riding my skateboard
I was a freshman in High School when this dropped…this album along with their other albums were coming out of cars everywhere in the parking lot…good times
In the 80's we all waited for the next Van Halen video to come out so we could sit two inches from the tv and try to figure out Eddie's riffs. He never showed us anything. Me and all my musician friends wanted to be Eddie. Every high school had their own wanna be Van Halen. Music was the most important thing in the world. Ed revolutionized the guitar. I'm 47, and I'm still learning his lines. I miss him so much.
The original lead singer David Lee Roth is quite the showman. Another spectacular music video by Van Halen is "Hot For Teacher," also from 1984, as this one.
I can remember when this video made it's premiere on a show called Friday Night Videos. That show was a big thing back in the day and for many this would be the first time they had ever heard the song Panama. Speaking for myself from the moment Panama begin the song had me hooked! The HOLY SHOT!! feeling I had after the song was over is rarely experienced in life and left me with that I can't wait to hear that song again feeling!!! All these years later if I'm cruising down the road with the radio on and I hear this song I still crank it up! This is my favorite rock & roll song of all time.
Eddie's sound has always been "like chewing on wet glass" to my ears. Crispy with textures and tasty bits that satisfy... but also sounds like equipment is on the verge of exploding. LOVE IT!
this was the one that did it for me. I was driving in my 69 camaro z-28 clone and this hit me like a ton of bricks and i've never looked back. years later I had the pleasure of meeting BOTH DLR and Sammy while they were doing their odd tour together. I sure miss that car, never sell a car you love. ever!
They were the ultimate party band in their day. Typical Friday night for us back then, if my band didn't have a show that weekend. Find the party. Turn up the VH, smoke ya smokes , draaaaank, and dance the night away, then figure out where you were when you woke up, and more importantly, the name of the chick you woke up with. Good times.
WOW! Memories. I was in the Air Force when we invaded Panama. Non of knew where we were headed or what we were doing, we just knew we were flying south (I was a Loadmaster on a C-141B). As we were crossing the USA/Mexico border, the Mission commander ordered all planes (100+ C-130's, 54 C-141B's, and 32 C-5's) to tune radio to BBC, the DJ said "This is for all our friends heading south over across the pond, good luck and God Speed". Then they played this song.... You guys gotta checkout Eddie playing "Eruption"! plus "Jump" and "Hot For Teacher"
The "blowdryer" sound was actually Eddie's 1972 Lamborghini Miura S engine revving on the recording. They backed the car up to the 5150 studio and hooked mics up to the exhaust
It makes me happy to see you two smile hearing VH for the very first time. My favorite band since I was 16 years old in 1978. The EXACT look when I heard them for the very first time 🤟🏼🤟🏼
I was at the concert the live shots for this video were filmed at... The Coast Coliseum in Biloxi MS in 1984 the same place RATT filmed the "You're in Love" video. Another great memory from when I was 14 when it comes to concerts by the greats.
The audio is not flat. You're privileged to see one of the all-time best arena packing groups that existed, Van Halen, featuring ultra charismatic front man David Lee Roth and one of the best guitar platers to ever pick up an ax, Eddie Van Halen. RIP.
Worth every penny of admission. When you saw VH you not only got great music.....you got a fckn SHOW!!! Always fun to see Dave work his high level martial arts and weaponry into the show!!! A TRUE Karate-Ka!!!
A bit of music history for the hosts, Edward Van Halen was invited by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson to play on the album "Thriller". He re-arranged the center section of Beat It (without asking. Fortunately, Jackson loved it and thanked him for making the song better) and recorded the solo that went on the record. This was a game changer. Suddenly, radio stations that did not play Motown, Michael Jackson, nor other Black artists, were now playing Beat It heavily, helping to pave the way for Jackson and others to cross over and change the course of popular music. EVH refused any payment but did ask them to buy him some beer after the recording session...
I'm 21 ( almost 22 ) and I love classic rock and older songs. I have The Beatles on my bedroom wall. I play guitar and listen to bands like ACDC , Guns N Roses , Van Halen , Mötley Crüe , Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin , Rolling Stones , Bon Jovi ( saw him live ) KISS ( saw them live ) , Alice Cooper , Metallica, Slipknot and more. ROCK ON! I wish way more of my generation did listen to this....
Gotta watch Eruption (one of the most famous guitar solos is rock history) which leads into You Really Got Me. You should be able to find a video that does both in one, they are meant to be listened together.
The 80's was such a fun time. I was 14 when this song came out. The most awesome thing I ever heard. Chase girls to it. Partied to it. Walked into the arcade to it. Cruised the main drag to it. It was awesome.
Yep I was 13, had older buddies with hotrods cruising down the road with a beerball in the backseat, picking up chicks cranking this music, and man do I miss the arcade, great times.
You will often see the lead singer David Lee Roth doing kicks and flips (and in this video playing with a sword). He is huge into kenjutsu, kenpō and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He even has a residence in Japan for when he is there training.
Growing up my dad and I had a different soundtrack for everything, depending on what we were doing. Going across town to his buddy's barber shop to get a haircut? Led Zepplin. Going to a hockey game? Van Halen. Going camping? The drive there was Aerosmith. Good times.
I saw Van Halen twice in the 80s, both times a great experience. David Lee Roth has a great rock voice, which is different from a great voice. He has a good enough voice for rock, but his main ability was as a showman. He knew how to command the stage, doing crazy and fun stuff that captured the audience.
One of the very best songs from that album, and my favorite from it. Eddie's guitars from that era are based on his own design he built himself for the '78 debut album, which cost him a grand total of $150 to craft. No joke. No production guitar at the time had all the elements he wanted, so at 22 he simply took the time to make the exact guitar he wanted, and voila, a legend was born. He simply changed up the black & white motif, for red & white later. David Lee Roth kept improving his stage performances on his solo run after the breakup, doing even more wacky flying stuff, out over the crowds even (we could almost touch him, lol), insane showmanship even if his solo songs lacked something in my opinion...I still respected his live presence.
A friend of mine years ago had got hold of the original stems of the recording of this album and he played the vocal track to me .... It was hilarious you could hear the empty bottles being kicked around their feet!
Van halen was huge back in the 80s. Saw them with Roth singing, what a crazy show. When Sammy hagar joined the band in late 80's. They exposed with sammy's great song writing and over the top lyrics. Sammy was really able to utilize Eddie's talents. They had so many number 1 hits. Some of my favorites are Right now, Poundcake, Hot for teacher, Dreams, I'll wait and you have to check out Eddie's guitar solo. Eruption live without a net. Eddie was such a musical genius. RIP eddie we miss you.
The album the song is from was the result of musical demos of all the album's song list , made completely by Edward Van Halen at his then brand new 5150 recording studio on his estate . He played all the instruments himself on the demos . His recording engineer Donn Landee deserves all the credit for his work .
Incredible that this is the first Van Halen exposure. Congrats. An absolutely epic, legendary band at the top of their game. This was quintessential 80's. There is so much more for you to explore here.
The sound is what so many millions have loved about this band. Not just Eddie but all of them are their own sound and groove. They are Rock N Rock Royalty to the highest degree. I hear you on the audio quality though. It's an older video of course
I remember when we had the military action in Panama to try help oust Manuel Noriega and he Lock himself in his compound, the military set up outside and BLASTED this song over and over on loop 24hrs a day on massive speakers to drive him crazy and drive him out his compound AND IT WORKED....lol
Just so you know, this is and will always be the greatest rock band that came out of the USA, period. No one comes close. Not bonjovi, Aerosmith or even Bruce Springsteen. I've seen this tour in 1984. Number one video on MTV back then.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in the Bay Area and let me tell you it was off the hook with the best concerts. Van Halen was THE party band. They were bigger than LIFE itself. WE lost Eddie, coming up on a year now on Oct. 6th. RIP.
I was in my early/mid teens and I was in a phase where I rediscovering Hard Rock amd Heavy metal, in the early 2000s, and we were on our way to 6-Flags for a school field trip and I had a couple Albums of van Halen on was listening to their songs "Runnin' with the devil" and this song on the way there at the time lol 🤘
The part where DLR is driving a convertible was shot for their Jump video, but they didn’t use it. Also, MTV had a rule about no product placement in any videos the aired. So Jack Daniels made that guitar because MTV couldn’t tell musicians what instruments to use.
My God I'm sorry for anyone that missed the 1980s. It was spectacular. I grew up in the 1980s/90s and it's the best time ever to experience growing up. Van Halen was the epitome of 1980s fun care free music and lives before computers and oppressions.
I deployed with the US military in the lead-up to Operation Just Cause, to take out General Manuel Noriega in Panama. And that is exactly what we did. During our deployment and the subsequent operation, "Panama," by Van Halen, was our theme song.
That “crispy” thing you are missing is actually from the audio being slammed as hot as possible to where it almost distorts. You will come to prefer the older sound without the “crispy” effect. Older analog recordings (recoding to tape) are warmer and have more dynamic range. It can be achieved with digital but most digital is ran as hot as possible. So the better the equipment you use to listen the more you will come to appreciate that analog sound. An example of the advantages of analog/dynamic headroom, will be at the end of the guitar solo when the whole band brings down the dynamics the volume drops but the bass, punch and clarity remains. Modern recordings they would bring the audio up to match the rest song. It’ll sound fine just different. It becomes a preference the more you digest and are able to identify the differences. All the great records of the 70s and early 80s were almost all exclusively analog. I love this channel! I’ll keep tuning in for more reactions!
Yes, these guys put on a show! I went to their concert where they did this song and many others, I think 1984 or so, and it was just like this! 😂 and David Lee Roth was a heartthrob 💘
Note: the revving in the breakdown was actually Eddie's 1972 Lamborghini Miura S, backed up the the door of his studio 5150. Very authentic. But you have to watch Eddie's solo from the 1986 concert Live Without A Net. You will be shocked.
Also check out David Lee Roth's videos after he left Van Halen. "Just Like Paradise", "Goin' Crazy", "Yankee Rose". And also check out the band Steelheart. The singer in that band has great range. Listen to "(Angel Eyes) I'll Never Let You Go", "Can't Stop Me Loving You" and "She's Gone".
VH was my favorite band in Jr hi and HS while living in Pasadena. Glad you guys are enjoying it. list to the song Push Comes to Shove, the solo is incredible and the song wasn't a big hit but it is an epic solo.
Eruption is a MUST (you'll never forget ;-) RIP Eddie). I think every album is absolutely worth listening. I myself prefer Sammy while David is the better showman :-D
Man what was great is just about every one of the tunes were great. You couldn't help but love their tunes. Just not going to be another band like them again. I can't stand this music now, thank goodness we had the 80s!!!

He even has a residence in Japan for when he is there training.
i love it when the new generations discover older music. it makes me happy for the appreciation
Lead singer David Lee Roth had an Opel Kadett (automobile) that he named "Panama". Check it out. It's pretty sweet ride.
"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" is the Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rolla....sure to have you dancing between the church pews. 'tis a bangeeerrr
One of my favorite songs from Van Halen is "Everybody wants some" One of their most underrated songs. IMO
I saw that concert in 1984..easily the best concert I’ve seen and I’ve been to many 👍
Van Halen epitomised everything that was fun about the early 80s
'whoa they're wild'
Yes they were....EPIC PARTY FUN
We used to have block parties and put only van Halen on the stereo. Those parties fucking ROCKED
A friend of mine years ago had got hold of the original stems of the recording of this album and he played the vocal track to me .... It was hilarious you could hear the empty bottles being kicked around their feet!
Will always be my favorite rock band of all time. Rip Eddie.
Van Halen, back then, was such a fun band! And their videos, along with David Lee Roth's solo videos, were so good. Great reaction!
Right now is a masterpiece
5150 was the end of VH. Their first 6 albums were amazing.
I liked the Hagar era but the DLR era was so much more fun.
The album the song is from was the result of musical demos of all the album's song list , made completely by Edward Van Halen at his then brand new 5150 recording studio on his estate . He played all the instruments himself on the demos . His recording engineer Donn Landee deserves all the credit for his work .
VH, one of the beat live shows ever!
Incredible that this is the first Van Halen exposure. Congrats. An absolutely epic, legendary band at the top of their game. This was quintessential 80's. There is so much more for you to explore here.
Saw them live back in the day… it was an absolute PARTY!!!
Saw them twice in concert, back in the day when they were at the top of their game. They were always "wild".
The sound is what so many millions have loved about this band. Not just Eddie but all of them are their own sound and groove. They are Rock N Rock Royalty to the highest degree. I hear you on the audio quality though. It's an older video of course
Guys attended Van Halen concerts in 1977-1981 plus 1990 with Sammy Hager. Truly the best American rock band of all time!
Great, great band!!! Grew up listening to and idolizing Van Halen!!! RIP Eddie
6th. RIP.
You can say 1 thing for sure, they always had a good time on stage. They sure loved what they were doing
Ordered my genre fluid shirt this morning, hyped, thanks y'all!
Oh God, Eruption, Ice Cream Man, Hot for Teacher… you guys have so much to enjoy, I’m jealous you get to hear this stuff for the first time.
RIP Eddie......Such a reflection of the 1970's-1980's. Never to be repeated.
My God I'm sorry for anyone that missed the 1980s. It was spectacular. I grew up in the 1980s/90s and it's the best time ever to experience growing up. Van Halen was the epitome of 1980s fun care free music and lives before computers and oppressions.
The Eruption solo from Live Without a Net will blow Lex's mind... and Brad's ear drums. lol.
I deployed with the US military in the lead-up to Operation Just Cause, to take out General Manuel Noriega in Panama. And that is exactly what we did. During our deployment and the subsequent operation, "Panama," by Van Halen, was our theme song.
"Don't replicate it with audio computer stuff!" Truer words never spoken. I'm still in love with you, Lex!
This was my first rock concert I went to. It was amazing! The entire 1984 album was amazing.
Great Reaction I was lucky enough to see Van Halen a couple times. It was just fun rock and roll.
You have the best reaction channel! And.. This song can never be TOO loud!!
These guys put on one of the most amazing live show in rock. High energy from start to finish.
Van Halen forever, welcome to the club!
VH was my favorite band in Jr hi and HS while living in Pasadena. Glad you guys are enjoying it. list to the song Push Comes to Shove, the solo is incredible and the song wasn't a big hit but it is an epic solo.
Eddy Van Halen one of the best guitarist ever. RIP. 🥲
dance the night away or beautiful girls, so many great songs also "poundcake" is amazing!!!!!
Got to see them twice and it was just like you see here, Fun, Fun, Fun!!!!!!
Been watching your great reactions and must say the lady there has a rocker heart! 🤘🎸🤘
RIP Eddie ..... Good stuff. Soundtrack of my high school years.
Diamond Dave, the greatest showman in Rock-n Roll concerts, saw them back in the day many times and beyond the fact it permanently damaged my hearing it was the most fun of any concerts I've ever seen.
The ultimate 80s party song. This would get us kids (kid at the time) up and jumping like nothing else.
Take a look at the videos California Girls, and Just A Gigolo by the lead singer David Lee Roth
