  • RV Maintenance and RV Cable Slide Repair. This video is all about an issue we noticed on our BAL cable slide model 22305 on our fifth wheel toy hauler. Being a fulltime RVer can cause a lot of wear and tear on your rig. It's good to perform your cable slide repair by yourself.
In this video we show a very detailed process of how you replace a broken or frayed cable on your RV or trailer. This job seems quite difficult but it's actually a surprisingly easy fix! We were quoted $800-1500 from many RV dealerships to fix this issue. After doing some research, we decided to do this costly RV repair ourselves. We hope this DIY RV slide repair video saves you time and money. Don't forget to subscribe!

If one of your cables are failing ,after replacing it, you should be finding the root cause of the problem or else it has the potential to fail again. Nine times out of 10 it’s due to the standoff Bracket that the cable is connected to, on the outside of your box, being misaligned up or down too far, so when the room seals in the in position, the cable is riding on the aluminum extrusion of the mechanism, and acting in a seesaw manner, and fraying cable, one strand at a time. When the box is almost in the sealed position, about 6 inches away from closing, the cable should be going directly straight into the mechanism. It only has a tolerance of about 1/8 of an inch up or down from being misaligned that could cause the cable to fray. The standoff bracket has a set of slots in the backside of the bracket that would allow it to be moved up or down to align the cable to where it is running straight into the mechanism once you removed the other four screws. Once the bracket is aligned properly, make any necessary adjustments to that cable tension, so it’s not sagging. This should help prevent a future failure. Please watch downloaded videos directly from the manufacture, which is Norco industries/BAL division on there web page norcoind.com to get a step by step instructional video.

Hey! Just found your channel. Great content! Regarding the fraying cable. We had the exact same cable location fray for us as well. You may want to check the ‘L’ bracket on the slide that holds the flared end. Ours was installed about 1/8” too low and that’s why the cable was fraying against the body of the trailer. I removed it and raised it a little. If you watch the cable as you pull the slide in, it should be perfectly perpendicular to the trailer. Hope that makes sense. If it is out of alignment, the new cable will fray again shortly.

I did that one 1 slide today, made a huge difference. The cables etc aren't under a much stress. You can tell by the sound is having an easier time moving the slide. Onto replacing 2 cables on another slide and adding 5 rollers. Thanks again.

I'm replacing mine on the other side of the slide. I couldn't bring the slide in when I was about to leave from camping. Turned out one of the cable twines broke and when it did, it wrapped around the rest of the wire. Ended up getting stuck in the pulley where I couldn't see any of this. Couldn't bring the slide in because of it. I was lucky enough to have an impact and tools. Put the square bit into the motor and forced the wire through the pulley. Scared the heck out of me when it popped through the pulley and the slide bounced with a big pop!
Thanks for making this video. Its great when we can all share instead of getting ripped off by the RV companies and their holding the trailer for a month to do a 1 - 3 hour job!

Followed your recommendations (with a few modifications) replacing an Upper-In cable on my kitchen slide.
    1) I built a "T" out of a 2X4 and set it under my slide and on a small bottle jack to support the slide out (precautionary move).
    2) Before cutting the old cable, I used a vise grip plier to keep the cable from going back into the guts of the cable system.
    3) After I fed the "Chinese finger cuff" over the 2 cable ends, I wrapped it with a thin layer of electrical tape. The taped cable ended up being too stiff to pass thru the rollers, so I removed the tape and only taped the leading edge of the mesh, and it went through with no problem.
    4) Loved your suggestion of marking the cable with a Sharpee to know where to place the sleeve for swaging. I was doing the job solo so I used a small cable clamp to hold the looped cable so I could use 2 hands for the swaging.
    5) I also wrapped the bitter end of the wire cable to keep it from fraying.
I was able to stand on the kitchen island and reach all of the cable mechanism without removing the cornice.
