      U should be able to do everything on flats. U need to point your toes down and push against the pedals to bring the bike up. If you are fast enough u can do it. ÅThe clips makes it a little bit easier and efficient. Go get it.

It maybe harder it maybe easier I don't know and I don't care I just want to improve my skills. I watch you guys so I can learn and subscribe because I have learned a lot from watching your channel. So maybe keep us flat guys and girls in mind when the techniques need to be adjusted for the different pedal preferences. Cheers from the Land Downunder.

    Awesome technical climbs. Lift, shift, and pull! Sweet. I've noticed tire pressure is so key, too. Also, having an exit plan if you have to fall or plant a foot. Do instant engagement hubs really matter or do you like some play? Thank you!

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll be interested to see their answer. I know for me, faster engagement helps. I proved that to myself when I had a stock DT Swiss 350 hub with the dinky 18 points of engagement that came stock with a new bike. I upgraded it to the 54 tooth, and it made a very noticeable improvement in tech climbing. I'm riding the I-9 101's now, and they engage very quickly at 4*, and while I'm sure the Hydra's and some others with lower than 4* are even better for more skilled riders, I'm not sure I can tell the difference having ridden both. I think most riders will feel a "dead spot" at more than 6*, and I think under that...you're down there where I'm not sure it impacts a lot for most riders....IMO. I'm sure someone will come along and say that they upgraded to the Hydra hub, and were able to clear things they couldn't before....and that's great if that's the case.

    • @richdrewtherideseries
      @richdrewtherideseries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there!! I really feel that better engagement makes a noticeable difference. Now, that being said, technique is still certainly paramount.
      Rob and I have been running Industry Nine hubs/wheels for quite some time now and the high level of engagement is what prompted us to try them in the first place. It's very difficult for me to ride a hub with less engagement and it certainly effects my ability to clear obstacles like this. I've been running the 1-1 wheels lately and the 90 points of engagement are awesome. The 690 points on the Hydra are certainly much better, but upgrading from the standard DT 18 points to 90 is a MASSIVE improvement.

    • @richdrewtherideseries
      @richdrewtherideseries  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude! I'm digging the 101's! I think the 90 POE is awesome. It's been awhile since i've been on the Hydras and they certainly are amazing. However, I doubt that going from 90 POE to 690 POE will inherently help a rider clear things on a regular basis.

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rich Drew ....Isn’t it whacky feeling now when you get on a bike with low engagement hubs? An old 18 point stock DT Swiss hub feels like its half a pedal rotation! 😂

    I just watched the talk about flat vs clips and I'm the 1st to admit I'm afraid of not being able to get unclipped. Please please please do a video on how to overcome this. I would love to get the benefits of using clips. I've been riding mtn bikes for over 30 years and I tried clips about 12 years ago and had a bad experience in a technical down hill section.

      Jason McCune Man, not really dialed in to good shoes for flats. I know most people seem to like 510s though. I have a pair of Giro Jacket IIs and they’ve served me well. I might pick up a pair of Giro Riddance also. I think the Riddance is a bit more durable. Shoes are such a personal thing dude, it’s a tough choice

    What is the sag on your rear suspension? Is it locked out? When I'm pulling hard on steep technical my rear compresses so much I'm pedal striking and get hung up. My sag is about 30% and is good on decents.

    • @archetypex65
      @archetypex65 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too much sag. 30% is not a good baseline or amount to be at. Way too much sag. Instead aim for 22% - 25% rear.
      20% - 24% front. 👌

    • @justsayin3600
      @justsayin3600 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I appreciate it. I reset my sag today and it rides completely different. I crashed twice today, once over the bars, don't know how I landed on my feet. The handle bar pulled my left glove off and broke my water bottle nipple with the lid still on, weird. Bent my derailleur. Then I tried to pump going down hill and went off the trail. Like I said it rides completely different.
      Be careful kids!

      @@justsayin3600 .... Dang man....I'd go back immediately if you're having those issues!! If you're a gravity focused rider, I see no issue with riding 30% sag (or even more) for most bikes. For climbing tech stuff...most shocks have a "trail" setting that's the middle one, and that helps a lot with tech stuff. The other option is...play around with volume spacers so you find a compromise that allows the bike to stay a little more firm in the mid stroke. I did that with my Ripmo, by adding the next largest volume spacer in the DPX 2, which gives it a little more support in the mid stroke of the travel, and ramps it up a little quicker on the bigger hits. That helps with tech stuff as well, because it sits a little higher in the travel overall, and will resist applying torque a little better. Those are a few things you can try without having to give up the "composed planted feel" you will get by running a higher initial sag. I would NOT mess with that if you are confident descending with that sag. Maybe try some of those methods to find a compromise? Good luck man!
