I was born and raised in MAKOKO and I can tell you authoritatively that the YORUBA or the IJAW never lived on the lagoon in MAKOKO. Those people living there are not Nigerians , they are Beninios and Togolese . That place is an illegal occupation and the Lagos-State Government should do something about it.

Everything the FG tries will fail because the level of government that interfaces with the people does not exist. That is the municipal level. Makoko would need its own municipal government to organize it, and that doesn't exist in Nigeria. Until we learn that not only police but also government need to come to the communities, we are wasting our time.

This dual approach would not only sustain Makoko’s status as a captivating tourist destination but also redefine it as a model for harmonious coexistence between tradition and progress. The community's vibrant chaos could then serve as a striking contrast to the structured modernity of real estate solutions addressing Lagos' rapidly expanding population. This will be a win-win situation of developers, govt. and the people of Makoko.
The welcoming nature of Lagosians of people from neighbouring countries gave rise to this monumental embarrassment that has festered for decades. The few Yorubas and other ethnic groups should have been evacuated to their villages long ago with security put in place to secure Makoko. Lack of willpower, neglect, and ineptitude in government led to this slum's existence for decades.
The major problem with MAKOKO are the residents. The solution would be for government to build a brand new low cost housing for them and then scrap this one. Poor people CANNOT manage a city properly.

Nothing complicated about a land that is settled illegally. Those on the land,like Maroko of yesteryear, know there are on borrowed time. No people on Makoko are indigenous to the land. They all came from somewhere and settled there illegally. Just because you occupied a land illegally over years doesn't make it legal..
If I were to play devil’s advocate, there’s such a thing as statute of limitations in urban planning. Failure to take action for decades is an indirect co-sign. It must be handled delicately anyway, in my opinion.

What they don't know is that Lekki was Maroko. In ten years' time,I bet you, there will be nothing like Makoko. Land is Oil to Lagos. No government would allow such illegal settlement to continue to exist,given the prime location.Especially when the majority of the residents are not even Nigerians. Many are Togolese.

Makoko is amazing and fascinating, it offers a unique and alternative outlook on how man can live and survive. As Lagos and other low laying cities begin to drown in the ever growing effects of global warming. Makoko may be the city of tomorrow. What the State Government needs to do rather than the knee jerk demolition is gentrify Makoko. Make it sanitary and clean it up and exert more control over it instead of seeing it as an eye- sore, which it currently is! Make it better and build more better structure, bring in electricity and portable water to residents, and realize it has a tourism potential which additionally puts Lagos on the world map! Sanwo Ollu- stop reacting and start governing!
