    Hope you liked the discus tank scape. Coz I designed it... haha! 😉 Yeah, the background was faux root, so I added that huge driftwood on the left plus a few smaller twigs, as well as rocks to create a riverbank feel featuring dead trees - the typical habitat of wild discus.

      @@SGBeardedAquarist Yeap! I've been into fish & all that nerdy ichthyological stuff since a kid, but only fairly recently did I decide to take the plunge; turning my lifelong endeavor into a profession.
      I'm a born & bred Singaporean with a penchant for aquascaping! 🇸🇬 Both biotope-style, as well as planted aquariums. I wish to share with the world my passion. And hopefully, our guests will be delighted by the beauty of the aquatic world. With fond memories of our country, as well as River Safari! 🥰
      I must admit, at first I was daunted by the sheer size of our display tanks but with the guidance & help from our team, well I kind of grabbed whatever hardscape was at hand & just gave it a go! And when the tanks were up & running I just can't describe the feeling. It's both challenging & yet, rewarding! So inspired to take it to the next level for future projects, that I flew all the way to Portugal, recently. To visit the Florestas Submersas at Oceanario de Lisboa. IT WAS AWESOME!!! Yeah, I checked out your vid in Portugal. Great job on that one, man! Outstanding camera work & commentary! 👍👍

Would be so cool if you could share about the process/behind the scenes or if you're doing up any new tanks over there. Not sure about river safari company stand on such things tho.
      And Takashi Amano's Florestas Submersas is insane! It'll be the next video 😁

    What I would have liked to see? A river. An artificial tropical river with shallow pools..into fast moving waters and loads of fish ,turtles,and plants. Maybe in a huge circle around the viewer or snakes and zig zags like a river. It would be much more fun and realistic than the usual giant bathtubs done all over the world. They have pumps that can easily move that kind of water. Water parks do it for people. I would like to see that for fish.

    How is that flowerhorn not eating everyone in the tank?

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carefully thought through with risk involved. Flowerhorns are cichlids and like most cichlids, they are usually aggressive to their own species, frequently extending to species of the same family and even fishes that just fit the look. Of course there are the maniacs that tear everything up but not all flowerhorns are like that and so when choosing the flowerhorn, I'm looking for a docile one (granted behaviour might change with age). As for the other fish, most of them arent cichlids and neither do they fit into his mouth to be a meal. So they are left alone.
      As for the 2 cichlids I have inside, one is a short bodied pink convict and i guess looks so far off from a cichlid that there is 0 aggression from the FH.
      The other is a jack dempsey that does get chased around from time to time. Usually during feeding. This is normal and it doesnt get out of hand because of the clear size difference. The JD is a juvenile and hence hierarchy is easily established without challenge/retaliation.
      So it's all working out, for now at least. And the past 6 months! :)

    I don't think I've actually ever seen Arowana in such a deep and spacious tank. They look tiny up there; they are so small compared to Mekong Giant Catfish surely they would try and eat them? They look a little stressed. Arowana normally prefer shallower waters.

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of things can be achieved in a big enough aquarium. For example this is so deep that the stratification means that the arowana is always out if sight and far away from the catfish. Im curious as to what made you say the arowana look stressed?

    About legalizing turtle species:
    1. Some owners may breed and then release animals into the wild. Australia for example has had several such cases which resulted in a huge disruption in the ecosystem. I also recall watching a video about an invasive crayfish species being introduced into a river in America (Might be Colombia river but I cant be too sure). The crayfish has since destroyed every other species living in the river and constantly cannibalize each other for food.
    2. Some are endangered lah obviously.
    3. Many aquatic/amphibious animals, which I am surprised to find out, requires a huge body of water/space to live and grow comfortably. Goldfish for example require a lot more than a fish bowl for a healthy growth. Goldfish bred at home almost always only live up to a fraction of their expected lifespan. Terrapins face the same problem. I had a couple of them as a kid and only kept them in a tiny plastic tank you find in an old aquarium store. I later realized it isnt very ethical to do so.
    Great video by the way! Very informative video. Keep up the good content.

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The releasing part makes sense except that the species they do allow, the Red Eared Slider, is the most invasive turtle species in the world. It thrives in many conditions and out-competes other turtles/animals for resources. Allowing turtles that are not as invasive (less likely to thrive and outcompete in non-native waters) not only doesn't make things worse but might actually aid the situation because there are many species that are not endangered and do not grow as large as the RES and hence less likely to be released. Even if they are released, they are less likely to thrive and even if they do, they are usually less aggressive than the RES and wouldnt hunt native fishes or outcompete other species.
      AVA does not make turtles illegal like other countries do. Instead, all reptiles are illegal, except the RES and Malayan Box Turtle. Seems more like reluctance to spend the manpower to do research and justify the illegality of certain species and instead they find it easier to only determine which are legal.
      And thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😁

      @@SGBeardedAquarist thats a real shame though. ive always wanted exotic pets like pythons or tarantulas. i heard you can catch scorpions in upper pierce reservoir at night but ive never gone around doing that. you cant really blame them for not bothering to do research, i think. we're kind of a niche crowd here in sg. not worth the time and effort on so much research. also getting approval of more species might not be as easy as you think. a lot of hurdles to jump to get approval from a big entity like our govt. also its not a secret that our govt focuses more on economic growth and sustainability than welfare of citizens
