I saw a CNN video in which a young couple went into a restaurant in Texas. The waitress told them they must take off their masks because the owner doesn't believe in masks or vaccines. They told the waitress that they have a sick child at home (cystic fibroses) and needed to take extra precautions. The waitress wasn't persuaded by that argument. When did we change from, "You can't take away my freedom and force me to wear a mask" to "I can take away your freedom and not allow you to wear a mask"? What's next? "You can't take away my freedom and force me to be Vaccinated", But "I can take away your freedom and not allow you to be Vaccinated".

I've been made to realize the origin of science distrust. I am old enough to have lived through the tobacco war as it were. Of course nicotine-addicted people who were told by doctors on television that smoking was good for their health do not want to hear from scientists and other doctors that smoking is harmful. If they embraced that, they would have to quit! They had structured a whole identity of coolness and success, in with the in crowd, around smoking. Cognitive dissonance ensued. Note that for a long time that 20% he referenced and the 20% of the population that smoked (now around 15% finally) is telling. That's when it started and how it started.
Great guest! Prof McIntyre’s Post-Truth book is required reading for understanding this era, an era that we may not see the end of for a generation. Easier to break society than it is to rebuild, unfortunately, and our leaders can’t even figure out how to shut down Facebook. Please interview more tech realists like him, for example, Jaron Lanier, Tristan Harris, Cal Newport, Doug Rushkoff…
Good name dropping there! I'd known of Jaron Lanier from way back, I think it was the Whole Earth Catalog or the CoEvolution Quarterly. And Cal Newport more recently. Going to check out the other two here shortly. Thanks!
Critical thinking skills need to be taught in school. I was fortunate enough to have been taught this way, and have benefited from it. This was back in the 70's here in the USA.
It’s hard to stay connected with people who are anti-science and won’t “talk politics” so there’s not even a chance- I guess that’s just part of dividing us ☹️☹️☹️☹️
Generally speaking Americans like to voice their opinions, even on subjects that they barely have any knowledge about. Self importance make people stand their ground and refuse to change their mind, no matter how irrational.
“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge’.” - Isaac Asimov
I'm 69. Back in the day when I was a young child, the only thing more dependable than a judge was a doctor. We trusted them and if they said take this or that, we'd do it, because, we believed in what they said and did. They are just people, just like the rest of us they can be motivated by money and politics. So, we must all now do what we can to confirm or deny the real value of their prescriptions.
Funny, my late aunt was a receptionist who worked for a doctor. She always maintained that doctors don't always know either. Blind faith is as bad as "denialism", since scientists and doctors make mistakes all the time.
The problem is that not everyone is as knowledgeable on a subject or knows how to use that knowledge to persuade. You could be caught in a situation where you're arguing over which "facts" to believe.
Even if you are it doesn't help. Some have rejected all facts because they constantly lied to by right wing media which they believe. Not to mention an entire political party.
Even the most knowledgeable person on earth only has small areas of expertise. (Einstein probably didn’t know much about medicine) The required skill is rather identifying adequate sources of knowledge. -If people take advice from telegram chats as facts, they made a dumb choice in some cases.
@@SanGeet0510 - I consider teaching religion to one's children, long before their critical thinking skills have fully developed (by late teens) does them a huge disservice and is a form of child abuse.
I got my mind changed. I got the first shot. I wasn't going to go back for the second but I don't want to get sick. I'm not a science denier. I just had a bad reaction on my first flu shot. This shot is totally different. Open your mind and think.
A colleague was concerned about family members who were at deep political odds, including conspiracy theories, etc. She felt helpless. I suggested that she use some empathy and active listening because arguing was driving them further apart. At the end of the day, perhaps love is the answer.
It’s a big club….and you and I aren’t in it. The corporations want us to be mindless….ignorant….and obedient…and the education system in America has followed along with that ideology. The states that still take education seriously…are blue….those that don’t….are red. It’s simple lack of decent education that’s causing the problem. A generation of ignorance has taken over the country.
Well, we know that's not going to help, but I know I've had it with these people. I have no patience with them anymore. They are a threat to our health and well being and to our economic prosperity and to our democracy. That's pretty much our whole way of life. My hope lies with young people if we can just hold it together until the tobacco generation dies off; that includes those that currently don't smoke or never smoked. They, themselves, are accelerating that eventuality by not getting vaccinated.
Minaj is the perfect example of a "cafeteria" skeptic. She claims that she needs to do more "research", but in reality, it's not like she has a stack of scientific papers on her night stand, nor does she have a lab, nor is she going out and gathering data on the outcomes of patients. For her, "research" simply means that she is scrolling through Facebook, and hoping that some overlooked nugget falls into her lap despite nobody else noticing. Facebook is great for gossip, but not much else. What she's doing is not (real) scientific skepticism; what she's doing is just "I don't want some nerd (or even a whole host of nerds) telling me what's good for me", even though we do it all the time without even thinking about it (to our great benefit). It's crucial to distinguish between two kinds of skepticism: 1. simple disbelief 2. earnestly looking for reasons to believe or disbelieve. In casual conversation, the first sense is usually what we mean. But when it comes to serious claims, we need 2. Real scientists do 2. People think they are being scientists when they do 1. 1 is cheap. 2 requires actual homework to be conducted. If your "homework" consists of rumor mongering (with the help of Facebook), you get ZERO credit; that's not REAL homework.
I'm willing to humor Minaj about this friend of a cousin experiencing health problems and a called off wedding. What we (including her) should be "skeptical" of is "What is the link between this person getting the vaccine vs. the health outcome? How do we know that the two are related?" These are LEGITIMATE SKEPTICAL questions. She never bothered to asked these questions, even though these questions are OBVIOUSLY what a TRUE skeptic would ask. She, like so many others, is merely an armchair skeptic, a amateur skeptic. It doesn't take a whole lot to be a true skeptic. They taught us this in high school (assuming you went to a half decent high school). Heck, they even teach it in middle school. Frankly, I have little sympathy for people who CLAIM to be skeptics, but fall for the very obvious amateur pitfalls.
A great interview. As for the public relations expert the tobacco companies hired in the 1950s to help dispel the upcoming study linking cigarette smoking with lung cancer, that person was perhaps Edward Louis Bernays, widely considered the father of PR.
Thanks. Two things to add. First, on the issue of amplification through social media: It’s not “just a dozen people,” or “150 indiciduals,” but the equivalent number of online “Handles”! Such handles can be shared, distributed, and run 24/7/365. I have observed indications for that, with my own grueling schedule, online. Second is what some have called “The Dumbing-Down of America”! A population less well-educated is more easily manipulated by Dezinformatsiya.
Nicki Minaj is a FULL GROWN woman and a MOTHER! How dare she share this MISINFORMATION with her 22+ MILLION FOLLOWER'S, without at least CALLING her Doctor to find out it this was possible? This was VERY IRRESPONSIBLE of her to share that gossip without at least checking with her Doctor to learn if this was possible! SHAME ON YOU NICKI, PLEASE ACT YOUR AGE & SHOW SOME RESPONSIBILITY! I think family is a powerful thing, whether blood or not.. some people have more of a relationship with which to call others to change through. Seems like doing your duty for the good of the country/world would demand that you risk inoculation to help the world get back to business.
I think that sometimes people use the term settled science too loosely. Let me propose a couple of simple questions. 1) what standards do cloth masks follow. 2) what materials have been tested and approved for cloth masks 3) What do studies for effectiveness of cloth masks show for efficacy. The university of Waterloo engineering recently school showed that cloth masks only block 10% of all aerosols. Yes I wear a N95 mask but answers to the above question reveal that the science is not settled as many would have us believe. One thing I find puzzling is why is it that these people that have these really weird reactions are always the friend of a guys wife that I work with that lives in Transylvania. One thing the author nailed perfectly is the Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns. They love to divide us and stir the pot big time. I cant tell you how many times I see these ridiculous comments and when I check the accounts they come from they are new and with little activity.
Cloth/fabric masks run the gamut and there are way too many types of these masks to generalize. Many are trash; some rival or may be better than N95s (and certainly more comfortable). Some are tested with rigor; most are not. The science on the question of efficacy of cloth masks vs. respirators vs. procedure masks isn't settled, because the answer is: It depends. It's complicated.
@@reelresearch If authorities are going to insist that people wear a mask through which all air passes they should establish minimum standards. I have noticed that they shy away from talking about studies on cloth masks. When someone says the science is settled on masks it is not an accurate statement. Most masks provide little protection yet they have become the front line defence. A lot of people wearing masks think they are protected when it is minimal and so they drop their guard and fail to take other precautions like social distancing and hand washing. I watched a guy a local mall take his hand off the escalator railing reach under his mask and rub his nose. I really think health authorities and agencies have been grossly negligent in not establishing minimum standards.
Science denial and conservative political thinking are frequently found together. Galileo would recognise the style of the pro-tobacco lobby of old and today's climate change deniers. Unfortunately lots of people prefer the certainty of zealots to the slow build up of knowledge that the scientific method uses. Science builds a picture of the universe that is progressively less wrong.
What about those of us that are completely out of empathy and tolerance for these people? We shouldn't be asked to be patient with ignorant, stubborn, angry, often violent science deniers. We tried that route and they took advantage of our patient, peaceful nature. I'm done with those idiotic, illogical, irrational, angry, violent people. I'm out of sympathy and don't care about them anymore. They're self-centered fools.
Good interview, empathy is fine but it has to be done one person at a time. We need better public education, it too is slow but deals with more people.
I blame religion. Being open to evidenced based critical thinking, quicky undermines the plausibility of the book so many Americans pin their world view on.
This is the minimal sequence of interlinked concepts to know in order to consider yourself scientifically literate: Validiy > Internal Validity > Threats to Internal Validity > Research Designs to Minimize Threats to Internal Validity > Levels of Evidence. Not knowing any of those concepts means you are not sufficiently scientifically sophisticated to judge scientific evidence for yourself.
Why is it that selfishness and distrust open society to authoritarianism? Could it be because governments have such a poor record of collaborating and addressing problems? Because laissez faire is promoted so strongly in capitalist systems? Because ignorance is the potential for exploiting fear?
What about the people who are angery, feel left out/behind and want to screw things up for everybody else. As we all know there are two ways to make yourself feel better one is to degrade everybody else, which is the easy way out, the other is to improve your situation.
If a country’s people can be derailed from critical thinking by pop stars or reality TV “Billionaires” it’s time to hang up our skates and learn Cantonese. The US has become the butt if the worlds jokes.
Calling your critics “deniers” is wrong. There are plenty of examples of scientists being right and plenty of examples of scientists being wrong. But calling people that disagree bad names is always wrong
"Divide and conquer" was a strategy developed by ancient Roman Imperialists. As long as We the People are at each others throats over EVERYTHING, will the handful of oligarchs that actually control this so-called "democracy", be able to operate with impunity. We all - you and me and all the other "little people" - we have ALL been had.
The best way to change someone's world view is to change one's perspective on one subject and then ask them to look at other subjects from this "new perspective". I studied persuasive communications and learned the different techniques of disinformation campaigns used by Totalitarian regimes, refined by the Soviets, and amplified by smart phones and social media. Rather than trying to "enlighten" or convince someone, you teach them disinformation/misinformation techniques in use, provide examples, and then allow them to connect the dots on their own worls view Data has a funny way of influencing behavior. Hey PBS, what have you done differently during the pandemic? Maybe you can produce programming that informs people on various topics like vaccine development, explain why we got them developed 3 times faster than any previous vaccine, define terms like "gain of function", "exponential growth", and "double blind placebo studies" and explain the authorization process the CDC follows. Inform the public. Why hasn't this been done a year ago?
Keep in mind a couple of things with Nicki Minaj, she's already had covid and she and her PR team used her post as a distraction from issues with her husband's past. It was smart for her career, but also dangerous if individuals who are high risk believed it.
You are not your beliefs. Beliefs change over time. No one ceases to exist when their belief changes. People who believe they are being attacked when their belief is attacked have an extremely shaken and undeveloped sense of self. Lazy people who haven’t done their personal work.
If it's slightly over 100 people in the world fueling this, I really don't understand why they are being allowed to do so by social media. They know who these individuals are, just stop them already. What are we waiting for?
@@Soapandwater6 the First amendment prevents the government from arresting them. It doesn't prevent social media companies from removing users from their platform. That is entirely on them.
10:30 If you're going to talk about Russia, you should also look into RT. And some of that RT stuff connects to some Americans, including on the Left, who have been on that network.
What does science say about the existence of God? Is belief in God rational? Is the scientific method rational? What do scientists have to say about belief in the existence of God?
I'm skeptical of the solution offered. Some folks need the Lie and the identity it affords. If they are wrong in their beliefs, then they were wrong to storm the capital or pick on a school board member. Some folks will believe what they need to in order to protect against that guilt. If that means pushing away the family member or friend trying to break through, some will do that.
The only solution that actually works is : cost responsibility". People respond to having to pay the costs of their decision. And even then, the hardcore will still not respond. But actions such as much higher insurance premiums for the non-vaccinated. Loss of job for refusing vaccination. Proof of vaccination to apply for jobs. Much higher taxes on climate harming products. When you actually shift the cost of "deniers" to them, you have a much better chance of them changing behavior. The solution of talking, experts, arguing, empathy, etc. has virtually no impact whatsoever on "deniers". But with covid as an example, those who have death ( a real cost) affect their friends and family are much more likely to become non-deniers.
Science is not about accusations and finding someone to blame 15:01. Facts are not necessary truth. One blueprint does not cover all aspects, a science prof. should know better.
To manipulate people to an irrational point of view requires that the message be carefully crafted and simplified. Science lists the facts and variables hoping people will make an educated choice. They aren't and they won't... If people don't understand it they dismiss it in favor of a simple and appealing slogan.
Minority rule is very destructive to the health safety and well-being of the majority of ordinary Americans and our most vulnerable citizens. Extreme right-wingers are not going to address essential kitchen table issues that affect the health safety and well-being of average Americans. They're more interested in retribution, pay back and obstruction. They're not interested in solving problems or working with Democrats to make life easier for ordinary Americans. This is a big problem in our system. Our educational system is collapsing as teachers are fleeing their jobs in record numbers. Inflation is a problem, OPEC is cutting back on production for oil right in the middle of the winter. Companies are price gouging and making billions in profits as oil and gas are also getting gigantic subsidies. It's this extreme right wing coalition that has no intention of addressing anything that is important to people's lives. They want to attack Social Security ,Medicare and the ACA which would prevent people with pre-existing conditions to get health care. They want roll back lower prices for prescription drugs including insulin. Minority rule does not support raising taxes for the wealthiest corporations or individuals, they don't support raising the minimum wage, they don't support regulating pollution, Trump cut a hundred environmental laws that keep our air food and water safe when he was president and dismantled the EPA. So is that what you support? I still don't really get what's important to you? Fox News in Tucker Carlson complain about inflation all the time but now that we have minority rule in the house all they want to do is get revenge with meaningless investigations. You complain about inflation and yet you vote for those who have no interest in doing anything about it. You care about lowering costs for health care yet you keep voting for those who have no interest in solutions. It's going to just be one big mess I can promise you that. Is going to be a ton of infighting and the most important things are not going to get done. You think The extreme Right Wing cares about your health safety and well-being? I don't see them doing anything good for you, your family, your children your parents or doing anything to economically help the majority of ordinary Americans in our nation. They can investigate Hunter, impeach Biden, dismantle the FBI whatever they'll still support the NRA and the proliferation of guns in our country that's causing more and more crime as they block gun safety regulations. None of these right wingers care about our most important safety nets. And in my view they have no idea how to govern In a way that solves the problems that need to be solved.
4:33 A meta study of mask wearing by the Cochrane review failed to show any benefit from wearing a mask. He argued against an anti mask belief which is fair enough, but he didn't have any science to back his pro mask belief.
I don't question the validity of how masks are needed or important but after a year and a half I'm sick of the damn things. I wear glasses and most often earbuds so they are constantly tangled up in my stuff. Someone invent a mask that's not a pain in the ass please.

Thanks!
Well stated .... an excellent interview. "Science denial is not a mistake... it is a LIE' is so good a description.
Critical thinking skills need to be taught in school. I was fortunate enough to have been taught this way, and have benefited from it. This was back in the 70's here in the USA.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge’.”

Absolutely correct information in this segment. Thank you.
In addition to antivax, QAnon, etc., there is also the various aspects of the manosphere, as described in Laura Bates' book, "Men Who Hate Women."
(Einstein probably didn’t know much about medicine)
The required skill is rather identifying adequate sources of knowledge.

@Adrian R At this point I'd even consider it. These people are a threat to everybody's health and well being.

It's hopeless. Not because of their intransigence, but because we are too impatient to gain their trust.

"Doubt is our product"- Tobacco lobbyists, and those who were paid to advertise for the big tobacco companies.
Keep in mind a couple of things with Nicki Minaj, she's already had covid and she and her PR team used her post as a distraction from issues with her husband's past. It was smart for her career, but also dangerous if individuals who are high risk believed it.

I’m pro intelligence. I’ll listen to people that have something to say. If something sounds wrong by science, that’s probably because it is.

To manipulate people to an irrational point of view requires that the message be carefully crafted and simplified. Science lists the facts and variables hoping people will make an educated choice. They aren't
