Only Chrysler could have pulled this off back then. They had perhaps the finest engineering department of any company in the world. Just the fact that they were able to mod the Torqueflite trans and develop a torque converter that would make this all work, was pretty amazing.
There was no torque converter. The tranny was connected directly to the low pressure spool of the turbine which could be stalled. The turbine had two 'spools'--a low pressure section and a high pressure section--they were connected to each other only by airflow.
If they still made this and I were rich I'd buy one for every day of the week. I love it. Beautiful styling and a great engine concept. It's a shame that Chrysler destroyed most of them.
The government made Chrysler destroy them for some reason. Idk if it was a corporate thing or a Ralph Nader thing (remember he hated the corsairs) and he thought it was unsafe maybe . I don't think those turbines would do well in rough driving like 4 wheeling or muddin' . Aren't all the blades precision machined and if they get messed up and vibrate the motors done I think he said .
@@Mr.CliffysWorld They where imposted on temporary import license and they had to return after they test marked them or be destroyed. So they destroyed 46 or the 55 produced, 5 went to resume and 1 to Jay leno, 1 to private person and 2 to Crysler. It wasn't cost effective to mass produce them so they scrapped the project
I've always thought it looks vaguely like a mid '60s ('65+) Chrysler product. It's actually kind of obvious, but I never really hear anybody say it ...
Amazing engineering for the time, not sure if I'd like the vacuum cleaner noise driving that as a daily car. So rediculous why all but a few cars were crushed, very wasteful
You'd lose that bet. Go to Jay Leno's channel and watch his presentation on his Turbine car. It fully explains it's systems, and specific to you supposition, how heat is managed. The exhaust, for example, is cooler than that of a piston engine car.
I'm 67 and never saw this car before. Amazing!
Terrible video ... cool car.

@@Greatdome99 Never studied a Turbine Chrysler up close and personal and never know that. Very interesting and thanks for the info.

That's amazing how quickly it spools up and starts. You don't even hear an igniter sparking or anything
Funny thing is this was the biggest problem is that it took that long to start
@@micahh9351 compared to a regular combustion engine yes
Looking at that you get the feeling tha car design has gone backwards.
I. NEED. THIS. CAR. Holy HELL.
I love it! It sounds amazing!
It sounds like a big Vacum cleaner, Or a big RC Jet 😄😂
Thats the most badass startup sound of a car ever ❤️ I only wish the janitor could quit vaccuming
Its 6 o clock in the morning, firing up the car and start the ride to work😂😂😂with this car your neighbour's gonna hate you😂😂😂
Great video, TY! Chrysler was the best.
That car is awesome!
Sounds like a ghostbuster proton pack
amazing how fast it started
Straight outta a James Bond movie! 😃
Interresting car.
" Engine to speed, turbine to power" 😁
I thought it was the 60's and Bob Hope was hawking Chryslers for a moment.
This WILL come back running on hydro
Turbine Power
Sounds like the apu on a 737 plane
That is so cool!!!..
DMC should have made one right after Back to the Future.
Too bad we couldn't hear how it sounds with the hood down. Looks like it has a lot of sound proofing

Its mean Chrysler can easily go to aviation market.

Does this gas turbine engine have additional air compressors around the engine room?
YES it uses compressed air for power brake assist because this eng does not make vacuum
you know I think you could 3d print this engine design if anyone really wanted to make one themselves
30 years program gone in vain... Engineering marvel just for very few to experience.
wild west accent
I bet it gets Hot easily though

The auto industry should have forced this on the government and people, they would have been just as cheap after a few years
