  • Maine Model Works is a model train store train store which was recommended to me buy a viewer. From what I read it sounded like an interesting store so on my most recent visit to Maine I decided to visit them. I was overall impressed, a large selection of HO locomotives at decent prices .

Harrison invades the US and I for one welcome our new Canadian model railroad overlord 🙂.
The MRC locomotive is connected to the MRC of power pack fame. They got into the locomotive game in a limited way in the mid to late 80s into the 90s IIRC.
Powerhouse was a supposedly more affordable line from Oriental of brass locomotive/rolling stock fame again IIRC.
Caught my attention as at the time it was one of the first commercially available locomotives factory painted for Chicago Great Western let alone a CGW steam engine.
A fellow CGW fanatic buddy of mine got one and it was a good runner.

I noticed that taking place in the late 70s going into the 80s!! Stores like this barely exist anymore!! The last time I was in a model train store was in 2014,and it was decades before that since I had been one,and approximately 1 month after that,it too went out of business......I would love to find a place like that, especially those really old model train stores, they usually have all kinds of out of production items, rare and hard to find items as well...................

the MRC engines were pretty nice. I have a pair of NP f units that are very nice looking and compare favorably with other brands' f units from that time. But Genesis, INtermountain, Broadway Limited, Highliners etc all came out around the same time with wire grabs etched parts and so on. I put MRC decoders with sound in it and they are a hoot to run.
The power house line was Oriental LImited, an importer of brass from Asian makers, plus Samhongsa on contract to build, assembled using die cast parts and some brass details. They run as nice as other Samhongsa products. Several generic USRA models, but also a 2-4-4-2. I have a 4-6-6-4 rebadged to NP by a previous owner. Runs like grease melts.

    2:03 -
    Varney Old Lady
Three Tyco Mantua - the Crescent looks to be a mid-60s version
Engine on right might be another Varney with a tender from an Aristo-Craft or similar import
All of these are cheap at $25, when I have those in nice shape I put them out for $40
2:09 - I think the top engine has the tender for the second Varney in the other box, it looks like the die cast imported Atlantic that was either Aristo or made by the same "New One" and imported by someone else.
Next one down is a Mantua painted gold. Looks like it might be the early all die cast one.
The die cast is a Varney and those used to bring $75 in that shape
Two below that are Bowser I think
On the right the black one might also be Varney, I am not sure, the gold one is another Tyco
None of the prices seem too crazy. Most would probably go for more on eBay.
2:30 - I'd be interested to see more of that green articulated. The tender is Varney, the engine might be Bowser. The T1 is Penn Line or Bowser sold it later.
2:38 the blue 4-6-0 is an Aristo-Craft from the early 60s.
2:41 I actually might need that New Haven F-unit. I have a Tyco set that is missing one.
2:48 the MRC engine is an Athearn dash-9 that MRC sold with their logo on it. Same MRC that makes the power packs. It might have one of their DCC decoders in it. They did not sell well.
3:10 the Tyco Super 430 in Soo colors is not very common
3:40 that's an Oriental Limited "Powerhouse" series engine. It was made by the same folks who make brass, but it's a hybrid with cast and plastic parts. They run pretty well. The only problem with them is they picked the same USRA Mikado that Mehano made and sold as AHM, IHC etc for a lot less money.
I had one in a collection I bought ... last summer? It sold pretty easy for around $125 if I remember right. I didn't have the box for it.
The engine you bought is pretty early, probably 1950s era. It will probably outlast you, as long as it's stored properly.

Powerhouse/oriental limited is a brass and die cast line of steamers that weighed a ton and ran decently. I found their models to be great, many think they lack details and call them entry brass models. If you can find one at a good price they are fun models and pull a ton. That brass mountain is beautiful! If you wanted to really smooth out the running, swapping to a can motor and adding electrical pickups for all wheels would do the trick.

one of my least favorite ebay buys. Cow catcher clipped the turnouts, tried to nudge it upward - naturally broke off. In trying to service the gears (no diagrams of course) I seemed to have dislodged a few driver springs (good luck finding those), the metal piece made to look like brakes won't fit back in place w/o bending... the thing sits on my workbench waiting for some quiet time to see if I can recover... runs horribly on 18" turns and not that much better on 22" and the tender it comes with is almost toy-like. OK my rant is over, but I'll never try another Powerhouse.

That 2-8-4 HO steamer is a beauty! I think 35-50 bucks is a great deal, even if it needs a lot of work. IMHO the "problem" with these metal steamers is, that you are tempted to go crazy with the detailing and never get it finished. A good paint job alone requires a lot of work, but it's definitely worth it. About the PRR T1: I have a PRR 4-4-4-4 T-1 Duplex in N scale, post war, shroud partly removed to reveal the drive and valve gear. It's the old Key Imp. brass and it was very expensive. I bought it around 2000 when I still had some extra cash. Never regretted it, it's awesome. There is a plastic version in N scale as well, by Broadway Limited, which looks great.

A very nice train shop, made even better by a couple of great guys who work there. They just bought a bunch of my HO trains, (locos and a variety of rolling stock, Proto, Atlas, Athearn), all barely used, some brand new, so, check them out for some nice deals on some pretty fine merchandise!

The brass steam engine is a model of the USRA standard 4-8-2 Mountain type with coal tender. It is a later edition as seen by the disc driving wheels. The one thing that's unique about the steam engine is it does not have blind drivers - wow!

I'm a little bummed. I was eyeing some of the beautifully custom weathered freight cars and locos, and wanted a better
look. Much more interesting than the toy stuff. I checked their website but they are not listing out what they have currently so that was a bust. There is one photo of the case. I like to occasionally buy other peoples weathering because it is a nice
change of pace to my own work, and adds variety. Not something the toy train crowd would prolly consider, but when you do your own Weathering, patching and graffitiing it tends to develop a flavor. Still enjoyed touring the store. Always fun!
added: I don't do facebook per se; but I found I could browse the whole store via their acct. Thanks again for sharing _another_ awesome store.

@@SMTMainline Hi Harrison. I'm not adverse to that, but need to shop First. Need to see to decide what to buy. I noted you showed the custom painter/weatherers sign and he has own website and facebook so there is that. Unfortunately not fully up to date. I don't do FaceBook per se. But can see pages etc. His handle he lists for on ebay is not currently active; that would have been a good route, but nothing for sale there. thanks!

I've always wondered why HO is so much more popular/common than N scale? HO takes up so much more room and you can have a much larger layout in N, HO often seem less detailed than N scale as well. My uncle had a collection of nearly 1700 N scale cars and 300 engines, including customized hand built/painted replicas of entire ttc streetcar lines, his wife sold them off and gave them away after he passed for next to nothing, such a shame.

If you ever make it down to St. Paul, Scale Model Supplies is an excellent hobby shop built in what used to be a bowling alley. They have a huge slot car track as well. I pop in there pretty much every week to see what N-scale stuff is cheap or broken.

MRC locos: yes those are related to MRC controllers. Those were 50th anniversary paint schemes. If it has original box and paperwork and unused it could be worth over $100. I can't remember if those were Athearn tooling. I like MRC digital and analog controllers, especially the one with volt/ammeter.

Interesting store though! One of the greatest store of all for getting into model railroading i would say idk i did see a lionel harry potter set though i think it was in g or o gauge dont know. Do they sell lionel o gauge besides the harry potter set or not. Btw always never oil a comutator on model trains like i said. The brass engine seems pretty cool though and i really like your set up with life like and model power boxes in your train room bud!
