    I honestly kind of like the HS3 a tad more. It sounds a lot more Yngwie-ish, specifically old school Yngwie Malmsteen. I really like his old school tone because it still sounds really metal while still retaining that straty vibe.

    Holy Cow!!! That is some incredible guitar playing!!! I like the HS-3 tone better. It just seems to have a little extra fullness. I have a 93 maple neck Yngwie and an 89 rosewood Yngwie. Both came with HS3 but sounded completely different from each other. I changed the 93 bridge recently to an HS4. The HS4 sounds better than the HS3 for everything I'm playing. It has added clarity. Thank you for posting this video. It's really helpful and amazing playing!

      Of corse you can??
      I have seymore duncans in the guitar i made; and personally i dont like them. Thyr too clinical sounding.
      Dimarzio has a woody sound that really brings out the sound of wood.
      Dimarzio company are incredibly helpfull when choosing pickups.
      They asked me what kind of wood i was building my next guitar out of; and they matched the pickup power and sound to bring out the sound and resonance of the wood.
      Its well known that malmsteen is a bit of a asshole to work with.
      Just watch him on stage. While other band members are working together; hes off to the side doing his own thing; posing and trying to look cool. Satriani and vai and petrucci are just humble guys that work together. When i first heard malmsteen it blew my mind; i love baroque music; and to hear someone playing it on guitar. Wow!

      I honestly can't hear that much of a difference between the two. The guy in the video does a good job replicating Malmsteen 's style so it basically sounds same-y to me either way. Not including the 63 vintage ones since they do have a more traditional single coil sound to them

    For me, there was a little difference between DiMarzio HS-3/YJM and Duncans YJM Fury, being the Duncans a bit clearer and more defined than the DIMarzios.. but the Fender true single coils KICK SERIOUS ASSES!! Dude, what a killer tone!

    I was listening to a podcast with Paul Gilbert and he said the reason Yngwie moved from the HS-3's is because he was having issues with volume since they are very quiet pickups. (I know ironic that the guy with the loudest amps would say his pickups were quiet) anyway dimarzio decided to design pickups which solved the volume issue but yngwie moved to seymour duncan and he created the fury pickups. Thus paul gilbert was given the injector pickups which are essentially the modified HS-3's. So if you want that classic Yngwie tone with no problems in volume, the injector's are the way to go:)

    • @primeDecomposition
      @primeDecomposition 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I put an injector pup in the bridge position of my CS '63 strat. Actually I don't think they're meant at all to be like a normal vintage strat pup minus the hum like the HS-2/HS-3's were, it's a good deal hotter than a normal vintage strat bridge pup, a fairly good deal hotter. Like the pup it replaced probably measured around 5.85-6K output. The injector's up around 11K-12K so... yeah. Hot enough that I lost most of the quack in the bridge-middle position lol.
      Overall, the Injector (bridge pup) sounds like a really muscular single coil, but definitely still single coil in character, still not in humbucker territory, you won't be doing any djenting with 'em lol.

    • @randomguitarhero7095
      @randomguitarhero7095 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adam Cogan the "quiet" pups refers to the low output of the hs3s ..quiet because it kinda dampens he overtones from his playing especially during those alternately picked licks... that what he is referring to as quiet.. not the volume

    • @tonybowen455
      @tonybowen455 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. I love the injector pickups. Yngwie licks are actually the most played thing on my fireman so far. I feel like they remind me of a mix between a paf humbucker and single coil, though. I'll have to get a set of fury pickups to figure out if they're the similar.

      I think he can't hear the high end more, which is why his tone got fizzy and the Duncans are too strong in the high end for me. Just an old deaf guy who can't hear the difference between glassy and fizzy tone. Essentially his rig has been identical, even if the manufacturer of his overdrive has changed. The only real difference is the Duncans and I think he sounds crap ever since. I like my HS3 a lot more and they are half the price.

    After hearing his interview on how he wound up leaving dimarzio i really think there is more than meets the eye with the real story.
    Yngwie said he was not happy with the dimarzio's? You are not happy with something BUT use it anyway for over 25 years??? WTF? i am supposed to believe that! really yngwie that reason is BS!)
    He could have had ANY pu maker wind him custom pu's at anytime so why did he wait?
    I really think he had a falling out with Dimarzio over something that was business related and not that he was not happy with the dimarzio pu's as he claims!
    he story just does not add up in the real world. Like i said he "Could have" had ANY pickup winder(duncan, fralin,lollar,and the hundreds more!) make him custom pu's at any time!

    First off, your playing is exceptional, I have a feeling that this experiment proved more about how much isi in the hands and the soul than the pick-ups.
    Personally, i felt that when you swapped to the seyour duncans there was more warmth in the bridge pick up, but it might have been a sutbler change in where you were picking.
    Furthermore, I think if i was going to go for another signature strat, listening to your rendition of Highway Star would remind me that the middle pick-up doesn't really get much use and that guitar just sounded so good, I'd buy the Blackmore, but again, your demo was smoking and in my hands maybe not quite so beneficial haha.

    I can tell the difference. The HS3 sound more strat like but fuller than classic single coils... The Fury's (which I also own) have a bit sharper midrange tone and are hotter. The best way to compare these pickup sets is to play them through a tube amp set to the same volume and eq settings. These pickups are hard to distinguish on solid-state or "amp modeling" setups. Plus with the HS3s you can get a volume pedal or the Radial Tone bone pedal and slam the front end of the amp and get a beautiful tone. Look, it worked for Yngwie for all those albums from Steeler to Alcatrazz and throughout most of his other albums... SD offered him a better endorsement deal. $$$ They are hotter but to me sound thinner and have more upper midrange. not bad. Its why I own both...

    I have a '74 Fender Strat, an '82 57 reissue Fender Strat and a '92 Fender American Standard Strat each equipped with DiMarzio HS3 pickups. Yet each guitar has it's own individual tone. I had actually considered trying the Duncans to compare. But after this video I can tell that the difference between the brands are too little too purchase another set. Thanks. Great playing. The thing I got out of this the most is that the output volume from both brands are identical. That (output) was my deciding factor in the first place for getting the YJM set. I find them to be super versatile for most playing situations. They are equally at home playing in the country band or in the blues band or even my classic rock band. And obviously shred too. lol. By the way. My '57 reissue sounds just like Vintage 65 that you demonstrated. Showing that body and neck construction play a huge part in overall tone. Again, great demonstration. Thanks.

    With HS-3 the feeling is a good sound but “lack of something “, and with YJM Fury pickups the sound is perfect, amazing!

    I’m wondering if playing clean or at the onset of break-up could better reveal differences. It should definitely show the difference in output. I also think it would be helpful to then adjust the gain so they break-up at the same time to demonstrate tonal differences. I suggested this latter point elsewhere and was shot down. Nonetheless I think it would be helpful. I’m on the fence as to what to buy for my HSS. DiMarzio specs indicate that the HS-3 has a considerable amount of bass which could go a long way in matching up with a humbucker in the bridge, despite the large difference in output level, especially if the single coils are used to clean up. You can always use an overdrive or high gain channel on your amp to get them to saturate.

    seymour for me, i think it has less of that squeeky sound when you move from fret to fret, and it has more thump on the bottom, very good for rhythm too

    to my ears, listened thru the cell speaker it seems like the sd s are slightly aggressive or with a tad of bite, while the fury are both rounder sounding and heavier sounding. I noticed this especially on the bending on the 21st fret. I'll take another listen now...

    They sound the same. The SD may have a slight bit more in volume in the mix. However them Fender pickups on that Hendrix strat sounds beautiful with the Malmsteen style.

    I agree, no discernable difference with the SD Fury or the DiMarzio HS-3's. If you hadn't changed guitars I would have never known. Now, that Hendrix Strat! Wow! Great tone on that beast. Plus- it has real single coil pickups- much more high end and open sounding- both the DiMarzio and SD are stacked hum buckers. I own all of them too and like the single coils in the Hendrix Strat way more then either my DiMarzio's or SD Fury's. Both are warm sounding but lack the big throaty open single could vibe that only a real single coil pickup can deliver. Those Mexican built Hendrix Strats are amazing guitars! It's in my top 5 favorite guitars that I own!

    I thought the Dimarzios retained more of the traditional strat sparkle. The Duncans had s stronger mid presence. By the way that stock 65 strat sounded great too! By this sound sample I prefer the HS3. I suspect the cleans are going to more of my pleasing.

    I think that with my Edirol monitors I hear that the pickups are almost the same, with DMZs go slightly towards modern sound and SDs towards vintage, but in a very subtle way

    Wow my friend!!! Congratulations!!!! First of all, I heard you all this video how you played that amazing solo... At the second time, I recently put attention how different are Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan sound. Well... Here is my opinion:
    These pickups are different, NOT AT ALL, but different... Dimarzio's pickups are a few bass or middle frequency enhaced than Seymour Duncan. When you did a slide at 6th string with SD pickups (bridge pickup) I listened a clearer sound than DM bridge pickup.
    DM pickups are a few less clearer than SD.
    But, I love both models! They are spectaculars!
    When you compare these models to vintage pickups, you can listen a powerfull sound, which don't loose their presence of frecuency. Vintage pickups are amazing, they can produce a very good distortioned sound, but they are weak, when you compare it than another two models.
    Hope my opinion would be a little bit usefull to you.
    Grettings!!!!! Long live rock n' roll!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🍻🍻

    The Hendrix Strat sounds more like the "play loud" which is a 68 strat, so it would sound like early 80s Malmsteen.

  • @JRaptorCQC

    Now I'm not a pro and not even close to being able to play like you do. I met Yngwie in 1984 in Dayton Ohio USA and I've been stuck with it ever since. I think he is one of the best and he is still to this day under estimated. I've seen him live at least 25 times and going to see him again in May. I love all of it and I love Fender Stratocasters which is why I own 6 of them, 3 of them being YJM Signature Series models, an 05' .v2, an 07' .v3 and a 2012' .v3. My set up is bare bones. Marshall JCM 2000 - DSL 401 Duel Super Lead Comdo, Fender YJM Overdrive pedal and Boss NS-2 noise gate. Using Fender YJM Bullet strings .008 - .048.
    My deal is that I can't decide which one I like better. The 05' .v2 is stock with the DiMarzio's. The 07' .v2 come with the DiMarzio's butt I switched it out myself with the Seymour Duncan YJM Fury fully loaded pick plate and then the 2012 obviously is stock with the Seymour Duncan's. I was going to change the 05' out but I just can't bring myself to do it. I love that guitar and the HS-3's.
    The only thing that I can tell you is that the 07' that I put the Seymour Duncan Fury Fully loaded pick plate seems to be slightly more responsive or active than the 05' and 12', it just sounds a bit cleaner and brighter and don't make any noise at all when I plug in. Now the DiMazios and the complete pick plate assembly I took out of the 07' I dropped right into my Daughter's 2015 American Standard Custom Shop Special and now that's one of the best Strats I've ever played. So I cannot decide which is better or worse or the same even so I choose both. Now I need/want a Jimi Hendrix and a Ritchie Blackmore model. Or a Dave Murray model. Thanks.

    The Duncans got a little more loudness obvious more output and fatness. The Dimarzios tho are clearer especially on the the low strings. Hm I like both hard choice. I currently use the original Dimarzio YJM tho in neck of my strat since like '08 or '09

    Agree. Great playing first of all. And...far prefer the sound of the Fender 65 pickups and think they sound closest to early Yngwie tone. Certainly don't hear a big difference, if any, from the first two, but there is a big difference when you switch to the 65s, and a good one. To me, Yngwie's most interesting stuff was with Graham Bonnet on the first Alcatrazz album.

    Great playing as always brother!! Awesome video. This is one of ( if not) THE BEST comparison videos between these two pickups. I have a"Duck"project guitar I'm working on and decided in the beginning to use the HS3s.. and watching/listening to your video just reassures me that I picked the right pickups for it. Inner isn't better than the other just different. The HS3s just have more of that early YJM vibe. Great job!!

    For sure they are very similar. I think the SD's had more clarity to my ears but the D's had something in the mids that was really scooped and fuller sounding. Both though are definitely the sound of YJM. The 65's sounded like a Strat, glassy and articulate and really original in tone obviously. Really nice demo.

  • @tanshaomala
    @tanshaomala 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that actually an HS3 in the neck position or an HS4? Because the pre-SD malmsteen strats came with HS4s in the neck and HS3s in the bridge.

  • @hgasca42
    @hgasca42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The different brands sound good, Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio but I especially like the HS-3 pickup, it has a very clear and defined sound without losing that original strat sound. It has that gruff, crunchy sound when switching pickups from the neck to the bridge pickup, plus it has a better harmonic and is very responsive for fast soloing and great definition when playing the higher registers on the fretboard.

  • @WDeeGee1

    I have 2 Michael Kelly Patriot Decree's, same pups, they both sound different.
    You hear it when you tap the back of the body, they have different resonant frequencies. One ismuch more midrangey and the other one has a big punchy bottom end.
    You'd really need to swap up to pups to have a correct comparison. Great platying btw.

    hello, are these dimarzio noisy like the typical single coil? or are they quiet like a humbucker?
