This episode originally aired in January of 1988. I still have it on tape (somewhere). And I did buy the original episodes when In-Fisherman was selling them during the early '90s.
I had the VHS Northern Pike: Water Wolf back in the day and Al Lindner's fish was on that. I have wanted to see that footage again and couldn't find it to save my life!
True giants. I love pike fishing . I live in Buffalo N.Y and about 15 miles outside the city a 51 inch pike was caught in a tributary of the Niagara river. Its a sleeper creek that mainly runs thru farm country . There are many stretches that are never fished.
I LOVE watching Al Linder, Doug Stange, Larry Dahlberg! Thank You Larry for one of my favorite lures of all time... The Whopper Plopper. LOL! 😂 I own almost every color in the 130 and 90 size, the 190’s are HEAVY AS FUCK! 😂 I have the Perch and Loon in the 190 size.
I actually just caught my first ever pike, 26 years of fishing I’m 28 so since I was 2 I’ve been fishing, for 14 years I’ve been always dreaming of that monster pike, I’ve had 2 after my hook but they just swim away this first pike I caught was on a white worm jig with a white head with red eyes the pike was 30 inches, longer then my arm and man was I excited, I thought I snagged weeds until I felt my rod going like a bat out of hell and my drag started and I realized I caught something thinking I caught a nice bass since I was near shore in 5-7 feet of water with weeds and rocks but once I got her to the top I saw it was a pike the video is on my TH-cam channel and my god was I so happy
Back in 95 I flew up to Sioux Lookout with some friends for a week of fishing. One day we boated into Knobbys Resort to eat lunch. A few tables over Al Linder and his crew were seated. The only way I knew this is because he was being treated like a rock star. People were getting his autograph and it seemed like everyone was talking about him.
Sorry to say but those arent the biggest pikes ever. Here in Scandinavia there are caught pikes weighing over 57lb that are accepted as records and they are found dead up to 59 inches, and in the more south eastern parts of Europe they are caught even bigger
Is 30 pounds a GIANT Northern pike? Is that really the line? I mean the state record here in NJ is just over 33 pounds caught from a not very large lake. I guess you do not have to fly-in to "special" places for giants.
ive caught many 25-30 lb pike and never used a net... not necessary... causes to much trauma and jeopardizes a swift release and injury to the fish.. fisherman use a net because they are not experienced as to handle big pike or musky...
Found one dead on bank loch mask ,when opened up there was a candle inside ,still alight ,😳 I'll blow candle 🕯️ out if u half the weight of your pike 🤔
How better to remind the gray matter of what really DOES matter - catch and RELEASE of those monster future providing girls! It's fun to bring these big ones aboard, but it's down right AMAZING when you do it the second time and she's gained 5 MORE pounds!!! Go Gators!!!
I personally saw what catch and release can do for a fishery over time. Grew up fishing in the 80's on a Canadian Shield lake in NW Ontario. Most people who went to that remote lake kept trophies and ate a lot of fish. Was able to go again around 2000 after 15+ years of serious focus by the owners of the lodge (only thing on the lake) of encouraging catch and release of the big fish and the mid size of certain species (based on breeding size) and encouraging people to measure trophies so replicas could be made. I was shocked at how many more big fish were in that lake. When I was a kid a 10 lb. pike, a 10 lb Laker and a 7 lb. walleye were the biggest I saw. In 2000 I saw multiple 20+ pike, tons of 15-20 lb lakers and many 10+ lb walleye. It was truly amazing to see the change over a relatively short period of time. All due to a focus on protecting the fishery and encouraging guests to think long term, which had not been done for 30-40 years prior.
@@tomfoolery333 Not to mention just how AMAZING it would be if the next generation of fishers catches one a trophy Mom or Dad had previously released. I'm with you - nothing can grow when it's dead - let 'em swim!!! In those famous words of the In-Fisherman - CPR ...catch Photograph & RELEASE.
Why do people insist on having a hard on over catch and release of sport fish. No one keeps them. I constantly have people asking me if im releasing the bass I catch. I always tell them, “No, im just gonna let it flip around on dry land until it dies” and then ignore them. Of course im releasing it, after a picture if it’s larger than average. How many people are cooking up large mouth bass? It’s a sport fish. Same with monster pike and muskies. If people are fishing for eating fish, that’s fine too. Who cares as long as they only have the limit or less? Panfish and cats are plentiful across most of the country. Seems like a virtue signal to me.
@@tomfoolery333sir great comment,and the truth!The Halley’s,of Nortthwestern,Ontario,had a lot to do,with the great fishery,of Northwestern Ontario,Catch and release were their credo,40 years ago!Halleys Camps Inc!
Nice to see Americans catch a nice pike, then tries to rip it to pieces getting the BARBED hook out. TRY BARBLES, PLEASE. The fish may then grow to a decent size.
Always loved how Al's passion and excitement came across in his shows and even still photos.
March 2022 in rockies of Western Canada hooked my first 51.75 inch 37 lb pike...only my 3rd pike over 30lbs....was crazy...can't wait for next one...

I remember both Al's and Larry's big pike too. I'm pretty sure I have that VHS tape here in the house someplace. I might even have a working VCR yet.

I remember Al catching that monster Pike when I was a teenager. Biggest Pike I've ever seen caught on TV

Larry Dahlberg...the insperation behind the legandary Whopper Plopper. On Fly rods! Got love it.
I've been looking for these clips for a long time , thank you
Caught my 25th pike over 30lbs in May of this year, I'm in the UK. My biggest is 40lbs 8oz.
That is impressive, especially in the UK. What waters are you fishing?
My favorite two videos of all time are, for big fish only and fly fishing for pike with Larry Dahlberg! Can't ever find them though
My biggest was 54in topping 35lbs St.ClairRiver delta..mid 80
-DAMN!
WOW! I haven't seen this since I was a kid!! " LOOK AT THE SIZE A THAT THING!!"

The biggest pike that ever graced the deck of my boat was caught in October of 2017. 48x23.
32lbs. It was ridiculous looking.

Fantastic, my dream fish, monsters!!!!
These are some big pike! In my area it's more quantity over quality. I caught 6 pike over the weekend the biggest being 22 inches.

Congrats! Pike are fun :)
Spotted an absolute monster last night in the Ohio river at 11:50 pm last night while carp fishing.!!!!!!
Love watching the experts doing it honestly catching fish only thing I can catch is the cold
That's a beauty... but you need to come to Colorado....they get bigger...
Lol hardly. Colorado has good pike fishing but a pike like that would be very, very rare
I met a guy this year who claims he got a 53 inch pike in the flag river slough by port wing wi. He released it. It had to have been 40 plus pounds.
I got a 54...
Always release these magnificent fish, they deserve to go back in the water.

Love the accent!!

Ask Larry about that giant steelhead he caught up on the Skeena.
Fantastically huge pikes. What’s the difference between big pikes and muskies ?
They’re a different species.
I have caught a lot over 40 inches and my best is 47 inches and I’m still looking for a 50 !
I saw a pike with 123cm…. What a giant it was!
Larry Dahlberg was using a fly rod???

Different sub species and you cant catch them in the numbers like you can in Northern Canada
Yep that’s going on a wall
My pb is 90 cm and that was already grazy big, I can hardly think how these fish would look like in real life.

Where at in NJ? All we got near me are crappy pickerel that I catch targeting bass.
Nones gonna believe the size of the largest pike I've seen measured was. :(
Goddam that thing looked over 50 inches!
ive caught many 25-30 lb pike and never used a net... not necessary... causes to much trauma and jeopardizes a swift release and injury to the fish.. fisherman use a net because they are not experienced as to handle big pike or musky...
No net, no scale, no tape measure...WTF?
