    The worst thing would be to make NPs look like private campgrounds. I don't care that there's no pool or playground. I do care that i'm not 3 feet from my neighbor.

      The Colter Bay Village area of GTLC.com was way too cramped & mismanaged in my view: summer season 2020. The DoI & NPS need to relook how they arrange campers, sites at certain high traffic points; federal holiday weekends, summer. The national parks are important & the focus should be on the land 🏞, 🌲, wildlife not on 🏕 or boats.

      @@gailwind4168 Some big rigs avoid those places because maybe they want some quiet, some nature and NOT to be 2ft from their neighbor. I understand your problem with big rigs acting like they are in resort campgrounds at NPs.

    What I want to see in campsites is more space between campsites, and more vegetation providing screening from other campers. We go camping to get away from it all, and to be in nature, not a parking lot. Fewer kids on bicycles making noise and hazards on the roadways in the camp and more control over noisy campers in the first place, especially in the evenings.

      Allow me to play devils advocate. These parks operate at huge losses. Without taxpayer support they can not exist. But tax dollars aren't limitless and parks have closed in the past for lack of those tax dollars. So would you be in favor of fewer parks so long as none of them are privatized? Is privatization of some of those parks the greater evil??

    • @beverlystewart5518
      @beverlystewart5518 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the national parks already charge hefty fees for entrance. Private business already runs hotels, motels, food service and shops. The campgrounds are an inexpensive alternative for those who need that option with low cost upkeep since they only provide the site, bathrooms with only have toilets and sinks only, and a place to dump garbage. Campground hosts can be onsite and be people who are willing to caretake the campground for the privilege of having a free campsite. Billions of dollars are provided to local economies due to the presence of national parks. The cost of administrative staff, park rangers and other staff along with the need for upkeep of the roads are necessary. I don’t mind my taxes assisting with that.

      @@backcountry164 the government likes you to think that tax dollars are scarce and hope you never find out the truth. Tax dollars are not as scarce as the politicians make them out to be for one. For two we should go back to taxing the rich like they used back in the 50's and 60's and even into the 70's. The 80's is when you start to see a shift in the tax cuts for the rich and the decline in wages which also leads to less taxes. And then there's bloated budgets for things we don't need but that make politicians rich so those industries and private sectors get money over things such as parks that the public would benefit from.

We don't want or need extra amenities that cost a arm and a leg. Yellowstone Fishing Bridge Campground is run by a private company. The sites are on top of each other and are way over priced. The big problems in the modern era, 2020s are the limited spaces for RVs, trailers, SUVs, campers. The camp area trails, sidewalks, roads are NOT designed for huge crowds, massive crush. Grand Teton Natl Park, NPS.gov had record levels of attendance, camp-RVs. 📊. The park rangers, NPS are under staff & in my view: poorly trained/supervised. Vail Resorts, GTLC.com has the current contract for the camp grounds, parks in WY but that is up for bid soon. Overall, the US Dept of Interior & NPS, park management need to better contain the safety, wildlife-boating, resources. Some 🏕 have unsafe roads. The cabins & lodges have carbon monoxide problems 🚒🚨🚧 . Long lines tie up the streets, roads in the mornings. NPS & DoI need to address that too.

      Those were not geese, they were Sandhill cranes. The fact that you can't tell a goose from a crane, speaks volumes about how divorced from nature you are in your RV. ... Personally, I would ban RVs from National Park campgrounds. You do not get the outdoor experience watching TV on a satellite dish in an RV. Who wants to listen to a bunch of generators running in a campground? In my opinion, campsites should be for tents only, with no running water or electricity at the sites - just an auto, van, or pick-up sized parking space, a picnic table, fire pit with grill.. Have a few water spigots located around the campground and bear proof dumpsters for camping trash. A large heated bath house with toilets, sinks and showers. That's it. A fleet of giant RVs in a campground ruins the experience for most other people. I do not consider an RV to be a camper. It's a mobile home. ... Last time I was in Yosemite N.P., there was a freaking golf course within the park! Ridiculous.

Keep the roads to a minimum. Keep the power and sewer lines small. There's no need for an RV greater than 20ft long, so restrict the sites to that. Let these big rigs stay in the nearest rv resort.
    The parks are for experiencing the outdoors and these big rigs pollute the views and the air in the parks. They obstruct views across the campgrounds, and require huge diesel trucks to pull them.

    Great video, and even though I wanted to quickly jump on the goose/crane bandwagon, more than that I want to thank you for taking the time to read through that NP document and provide a short, informative review of what you got out of the proposed plan. As a former career wildlife biologist, slogging through environmental and other planning documents was my job, and we always appreciated the review and input from ordinary citizens that take the time to read this stuff and educate themselves to what's going on with the places and resources they care about. Thank you!

    Other things I see in comments: When you say you want more but shouldn't have to pay more you are saying that others should foot the rest of the bill for you. It costs money to build and maintain these things so if you aren't paying for it then someone else is (taxes for instance). Also keep in mind bigger spaces means less spaces. NP camp grounds are usually sold out during the season and less sites would mean even less access for people.

    Love the shot of the large motor home at the dump station with the little Casita trailer behind it - we used to have a Scamp and now have one of the smaller Rpods - for the very reason to be able to fit in small sites, use dry camping sites and not need hookups or all of the RV park style amenities. I like when the campgrounds blend in and are about being out in nature.

    I think as a camper all my life, the idea is great. One of the biggest problems I have faced is the reservation process, most of the individuals have no idea of how to answer questions that campers have. Can tent campers park next to rvrs, can cab over campers come into so called rv resorts. Just a sample of questions

    Great video and absolutely agree. Great way to end the video with exactly what you are in a campground for-the experience of nature. No need for rec centers and wifi. We just need trails and access to the natural wonders that are the reason for the park. More campgrounds is the one thing that is needed. It’s very hard to get a site and often an artificial problem because loops or campgrounds are closed.

      I certainly understand your perspective... but another way to think about it is that it would eliminate the need for people to run generators... which would improve the campground significantly, especially if you’re in a tent next to the RV. Again, not trying to say all sites should have electricity, but just pointing out it could have a positive outcome for tent campers too. Also, in the future of electric cars (like Tesla), they could be good too... but now I’m really getting on the bushes (pun intended).

      In the Nevada State Parks that offer electricity or other hookups they just charge $10 extra for the campers who use them. It's very fair in that way because both RVers and tent campers will use electricity, but plenty of either also don't use the hookups. Or they might need hookups every other day. This is a possible solution to the problem you raised. My point is that solutions exist and are already being implemented in plenty of campgrounds. The document from the NPS uses specific examples from various locations as 'ideal' campground design.

    I would like to see some kind of well organized volunteer corps whose mission it is to help campers that are disabled or from other countries or otherwise might face obstacles to camping here. Easy enough so set up with apps on phones. I'd volunteer when I'm out camping. Not drive 500 miles to help somebody but happy to help my neighbor or the next campground down the road if he or she isn't always physically able to do everything or needs help understanding how things work in this country. I think it would be rewarding and I'd make some new friends for sure.

There are lots of commercial campgrounds to be found for those who want a commercial experience.

    Thank you for this video. We have never stayed at a NP campground because we usually can’t fit with a 40’ travel trailer and our trips are more “last minute” as I travel fulltime for work and usually don’t get more than a couple weeks notice.. It would be great to modernize the amenities: power, water, sewer, wifi, restrooms... But we certainly would not want those pristine parks to turn into a Jellystone or KOA.

    I'd love to see new sites and campgrounds take priority over more electricity, water and sewer to existing sites. We stayed at the Gros Ventre campground close to the Tetons and we had no hookups, I have plenty of solar on our fifth wheel and tank capacities to boondock for several days. All I need is a dump station on the way out when we're leaving.
    More sites even without any hookups would go a lot further towards helping the biggest issue and that's the lack of available sites especially during the summer.

      Being an RV person (converted skoolie), I see the NPs as more of a boondocking option. The simpler folks are probably more on the end of enjoying nature- maybe separate areas for big rigs and smaller vehicles, putting everyone into the same space is probably a mistake. That and expand rest areas or develop completely RV oriented alternatives.

    I'm not impressed with what I heard. I remember a time when there were no hookups in National Parks. The emphasis on RV's will only make it more congested with fewer people. I grew up tent camping with my family in the National Parks in 50's and 60's. There were no lotteries, no reservations and no trams. We paid our fee and picked our campsite. Sometimes we had trouble deciding which of the several available campsites to choose. We drove the family station wagon thru the Wawona Tunnel Tree in Yosemite. Now the summer crowds are so thick in Yosemite, they could use a traffic cop on some of the Yosemite Valley road crossings. I think there are 2 main reasons for the overcrowding. One, an increased environmental awareness beginning in the early '70's made a vacation in more natural wilderness setting appealing. But I think the biggest factor is the advent of the motorhome. A palatial motorhome allows people to travel with all the comforts of home. Those who would never sleep in a tent in a sleeping bag on the ground can now travel not only in comfort, but luxury. By catering to these large RVs, fewer campsites will be available. Fortunately for me, I saw the more popular National Parks, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, etc.. years ago before things like reservations. And I have a Jeep and my tent so I can get away from packed National Parks and explore National Forest lands and Bureau of Land Management camping areas. But I do feel sorry for young families today jumping on their computer at home desperately hoping they can snare a reservation for their dream summer vacation in their National Park of choice. Or when they get to a place like Zion, can they squeeze their family on one of the trams? Privatization? Yuk! I guess they want to turn it into Disneyland of the wilderness where only those with the $100,000+ motorhomes and RVs can afford to go.

      "...more congested with fewer people..." What?

    • @RicardoRoams
      @RicardoRoams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Steve-eh3zk Yes. The big rigs that are favored with this plan will cause major congestion because of their size. These behemoths are already causing traffic jams on the roads in Yosemite Valley now. They will be getting larger than normal campsites so that means there will be fewer campsites in total. Fewer campsites means fewer people. This problem will only spread to other National Parks, if this plan is implemented. Reservations will be even harder to come by.
