Van Demolition (Van Build - Part 5)

- Getting the van ready for the build has been a much bigger process than we expected. Or maybe a longer process than we expected? And with my trip to the States we ran into a few delays (with the build, but also with this upload - thank you for your patience!), but I’m hoping that the next few days are super productive and we can finish checking off all the things that Lou had planned for his week alone.
Without my chatty self, Lou turned his week alone into a beautiful, peaceful video chronicling his hard work and his new friends watching all the van progress. I feel like my time away was some sort of wonderful turning point and the donkeys finally became comfortable to express all their curiosity about the van living in their home. I can’t wait until they’re as friendly with me : )

The rust - as shitty as it is - is crazy art! It looks so pretty! And I love the orange inside, it looks so nice and warm, you should try and keep some of that atmosphere :)

Loved the video, reminded me of when John and I were working on John's car . Prep work always takes long than you think, but it is going to start building steam. Smiled when I saw the vice grip, my all time favorite tool--never failed me. Good luck on the work this week. Can't wait for the next update!

Just a side note: It's a stronger repair to leave the screws in place and grind the heads off. Once you seal the metal with anti-rust paint, the screws will forever stay in place.

I've had my Macbook Pro since the end of 2012 and its' still going. Though I did have about 3-4 mac hard drive replacements before getting a solid state drive. Highly recommend ditching the mac hard drive and getting a solid state if you can. :)
Hi Erin, I think the work we do on the laptop might just be a little much for it, but in my experience a mac laptop in daily use doesn't usually last more than 3-4 years tops, we shall see if this one goes for longer! ---Lou
You are doing such a great job. Loved the donkeys coming to visit you. Crazy that it is cheaper to fly to New York and buy a computer than to buy where you are.
Yeah apple doesn't change their prices based on currency so its a lot more expensive with the conversion plus vat, and the delay to get one here at the store was over 2 weeks! Dana also wanted to visit her friends and family of course, and we ordered a bunch of other stuff for the van she had to carry back since we don't live on a marked street here and can't receive mail ; ) ---Lou
As someone who has experience with this level of rust - that hole in the wheelwell are hours upon hours of work. And if you don't do it right it won't last very long... Ask if you have questions.

OMG I'm not surprised that you only pay 3000€ for the van, it has rust everywhere and with soooo many holes!! I don't know how you were able to travel with her before, you must have been very cold sleeping in it! I guess the engine will be fine, but the van needs a serious internal work. It will be interesting to see how you fix it and transform!! Good luck! :)
Hi Desiree, so sorry for the delayed response we've been super busy repainting the whole van ; ) Yeah it was a little pricy (more like 6k actually) but these vans are hard to find in Germany, this was the only one we could find that was registered for the road in our price range, there were really really broken ones for 3k and shiny newer ones for 14k so we thought we'd just fix this one up, and its been so so much fun so far!! Hi Lexis : ) Sorry to hear about the laptop! Ours held on for a month after the initial crash, and it might still work for a year or so but its not reliable in any way, which is not good for the commercial work we're doing with actual client deadlines so we needed a machine we could actually count on for that! We're actually working on the rust today, with some anti rust solution and then a fresh coat of white anti rust paint over everything! ---Lou

We're aiming for Greece by winter, Dana is switching to Spanish mode now that we've permanently left Germany since that will be a lot more useful here in Spain and on the road as well : ) ---Lou

Thats hard camping all the time, you have none of the luxuries as one does in the us.
What cheap-ish digital camera would you recommend for beginner photography? I have a canon a1 but it's too expensive to keep up with . Thank you 😊 my work is on instagram @shona_dixon11
nice i looked at your photography and it is amazing, depends on the budget really. if you want to be really cheep you could go with a cannon t2i. but if you are really into photography and want to spend a bit more i recommend a full frame cannon 5d mark 2 which i got for $600 on ebay for just the body. with an adapter you could us the same lenses
I use a Canon A-1 and a Sony A7. It depends on your budget, I got my A7 for £450 and then just used some old Canon FD lenses (which I presume you already have) and an adapter to avoid spending hundreds on other lenses. My sister had a Nikon D3100, they're about £150-200 if your budget doesn't go too high. I used it for a while to really get into photography. I'm @jameswafflepower on Instagram if you wanna see some of my stuff.. :)

look on eBay and get a cheap compact with a ccd sensor and manual mode. should be really cheap w/ nice colours and sharp images. master technical skills first then focus on composition. ie. get familiar with manual and get good then move to av/p and just focus on the composition of your shots. it's a neverending process but pretty soon you should develop an eye for interesting photos as well as the technical skill to execute them as you imagine. remember not to focus on the technical side too much, it needs only to fulfill your vision
