Ooops, missed opportunity. Visit Schiedam, tallest historical windmills on the planet and have their own Jenever museum.
Schiedam used to have the most Jenever distilleries, fewer now, but still the biggest ( Bols, Ketel1, de Kuijper, Nolet)

Wow, you enjoy your time in the Netherlands. You are professionals in video science. When we were young ( now 77 yo) we read a book that was "Kruimeltje" or "Pietje Bell" , everybody read it. It took place at the beginning of the 20th century in Rotterdam! The naughty boys stood at a cafe. When a man came outside with a sip of jenever still in his mouth to enjoy it a little longer...they asked: sir, what time is it? Then he had to swallow it.

  • @hcjkruse

This might be even more fun than Schiedam! Still worth to visit for the mills and the jenever museum, city museum and the small coop museum behind the city museum. Schiedam in literature known as Zwarth Nazareth because of the slums and jenever.
    I grew up in Schiedam.
In the 1980s every Friday a distillery had its cleaning day and the sewers turned red from bessenjenever. My father worked on sewer technology those days. They still had open basins at some pumping facilities. Those days the basins were dark red and there was a heavy alcohol smell.

Fascinating video. Love the tour. I'm a bit of a scotch guy, but I do like a good gin and tonic. Haven't explored beyond Hendricks Gin, but I'm now inspired. I guess the flavor profile you can create is unlimited. That's always fun. My first time in NL was on a bike and boat tour and one night the host pulled out a 'special' red gin he thought Americans would like because it's sweet. It was horrid. My wife later explained that it was an 'old ladies' gin she remembered her grandmother drinking. Forget the name... ?

My favourite jenever is Rogge jenever (jenever from rye).
I always used to think jenever was an 'old folks' drink (I only ever tasted 'jonge jenever', which I really didn't like that much). Until I visited a jenever distillery in The Hague, called Van Kleef. Did a tasting there of a selection of their jenevers and I was converted.
If you ever find yourself in The Hague again, I recommend visiting Van Kleef.

In 1688 the Dutch Willem III introduced Jenever in England. Gin is a derivat from Jenever with one different alcohol ingredient. Jenever was first described in 1650. London Dry Gin is the closest drink to Jenever. In other words: it was the 17th century and not the 16th as the host says.

When you visit a pub in the Netherlands, you must order a "kopstoot".
A "kopstoot" is a beer with a young jenever (drink) next to it, so in separate glasses.
You must first drink the glass with jenever in one time empty and then drink slowly the beer. Real nice.

oh that’s probably why it’s young - less of the aged stuff (the malt wine alcohol)

    • @spanishseduction1984
      @spanishseduction1984 ปีที่แล้ว

Jonge genever have a maximum of 15% maltwine, and no minimum. It is even possible to have 0% maltwine in jonge genever. Oude genever have a minimum of 15% maltwine in it, and no maximum. So you can have even 100%, but then we stellen it normaly as Maltwine. We have also a product between Oude Genever and 100% Maltwine, that's called Korenwijn, that has a minimum of 51% moutwijn and that is great stuff.
Maltwine is the great stuff with the lovely taste, because the alcohol of maltwine is made of grain. During WW2 there was not enough grain available for making alcohol, and it was cheaper to make alcohol from melasse. Negative point: the taste wasn't that great as with the old style genever. People in the Netherlands gave it the name jonge genever or oude genever, to make clear if the genever was in the old style (oude genever) or New style (jonge genever).
Most people only know jonge genever, and dislike genever for that reason, not knowing how great Oude Genever is.
If I have to advise genever to a non genever drinker and to be sure they will love it: Zuidam Distillers in Baarle Nassau. Their 5 year old korenwijn is so great that in many tastings it is used as mistery drink. Many whiskylovers think they have a lovely whisky in the glass, but actualy it is the Dutch Proud: Genever (the product that ruled the world long time ago (VOC).
