It’s actually named off of the 5 ticks it takes to cast an ice barrage in old school runescape
LMAO W comment
the more you know
WOAH WOAH slow down there you’re talking crazy
Brilliant comment dude! 🤣
@@VARVIS_😊😊😊😅
despite not being as popular as Holy Wars or Tornado, this song is a very strong contender for the best in the album imo. It's just sublime
no its not its megadeth
Take No Prisoners and Rust In Peace both beat 5 Magics... however this album is solid all the way through. Prob the greatest metal album of all time.
@@TherionPalace personally I like Five Magics better than Take No Prisoners and Rust in Peace, but you're right, each and every song in this album is at bare minimum great and solid asf
Every single song is a contender.
Perhaps my favourite of the album
1 alchemy 2 wizardry 3 sorcery 4 thermatology 5 electricity
Electricity! Biology!
@@ThomasWT84 biology?
It’s fun you’ll see!
@@williamcozart8158seems to me, it's chemistry
@@ThomasWT84 Seems to me it's..... chemistry lol
I have always loved this song. Imagine being 14 years old and buying this at the music store. Bring it home and hearing it for the first time while reading the lyrics. Mind blown.
I can imagine it at 12 in 1992, but not 14, sorry. (just kidding)
I was 17.
I do! Mostly I remember the sweet smell of the cassette lining
It did have a sweet chemical smell when they were brand new. And the print was so tiny you had to hold it up to your nose to read it and really breathe it in, LOL!
Same! I was around 13 and this song just hit me like a ton of bricks. That monstrous sounding voice answering back at the call vocals was just terrifying and genius, very original, and this is easily one of the greatest metal songs in history.
Wizardry lyrical themes go so hard, makes any doom metal song 10x better
Thanks for putting this together. I'm a huge Megadeth fan and the Rust in Peace album is one of my favorites.
I can't even get all the way through a Varvis deep dive without pausing the video to go listen to the song lmao
Good 😂😂 that is my intention
I've always thought it sounded like he was saying "Thigh Master."
Thanks, can't not hear that now :(
Or "a mile high (fill in the words ) wrestles your nostrils...
Dude mee too i think early 90s thigh master was popular when my mom bought me this record when i was 9. First cd i ever bought in kmart.
Hilarious 🐨👍
Susan sommers?
Outstanding breakdown. This whole album blew me away when it came out in 1990. Souls of Black from Testament came out around the same time. They both had such a dark, overpowering, mysterious feel to them. I'm surprised I didn't melt the cd's from playing them so much.
I bought both albums as well and discovered sadus about that time and death metal just blew up. I was in high school and metal manics was how I found music. Wild time to be alive!! Miss it
And I felt betrayed by Metallica black album...
This song is incredibly bad ass.
now imagine if there were 6 magics
Why stop there? How about 7?
@@VARVIS_ 8
Me : picturing Nigel “this one goes to eleven” why not make 10 magics one more magical? “This one goes to eleven”
24 is the biggest number, forget about it!
@@VARVIS_
You're all amateurs
How abut 666 Magics
Well, this is my favorite metal album of all times, and I always hated when people dismissed metal for being only "power chords". I have always seen these different entonations and colors in 90s Megadeth and you can find some comments from me here in youtube praising the fact that Megadeth is one of the very few monster metal bands (with more than 20 millions albums sold) where you can actually see diminished, sus chords progressions, gipsy-jazz solos etc. We are so lucky that these 4 dudes created such master piece as Rust in Peace... here we are 34 years later still talking about this album.
I actually can't imagine my life without this album. Cheers!🤘
If anyone dismisses metal as only "power chords", they never listened to classical music OR metal.
This was one of my first and favorite metal albums!!! My metal head buddies at the time didn't like it, but they now jam it all the time, and understand how great it has always been.
Then they've never listened to pop music, which is literally just repetitive boring progressions
This song is full of energy and power.
I’m pretty sure he meant the evil prince was hiding his iron fists in velvet gloves of sin.
As in, he’s a brutal, ruthless, wealthy dictator who loves to indulge himself with such fineries as velvet gloves, starkly juxtaposed with the hands they envelope, hands that have done awful things to afford such luxury.
I agree
Also read it that way
Master of the Five Magics is a fantasy novel by Lyndon Hardy, first published in 1980.
Tell them! 99% have no idea !
@@mosthighguitarguyCrazy. I thought it would be well known. I was wrong.
I need to reread them it was an excellent series!
Read the book because of this song. Both are a 10/10
@@tdubya75 That series is so inspirational. It seems to show that all ones failures could in actuality be culminating in preparation for a major win. i definitely need to revisit them soon .
Who else immediately played Five Magics after this lesson into the Five Magics.
BTW the 6th magic is Daveatology.
Great job. Love this content.
SUGGESTION= Judas Priest. The Sentinel
That is an interesting from Priest hmmm....
@@VARVIS_ an amazing song too.
I would have suggested Forbidden- through eyes of glass. But most people never hear of Forbidden, unless you lived in the golden age of metal.
I was at the high school homecoming football game 1990 when I asked my future love of my life girlfriend out… “officially” my best friend handed me Rust In Peace (cassette tape) and warned me that I might lose my shit because it’s the best album he’s ever heard. He was right. I lost my shit. It stands up against ANY metal record ever made and wins imo.
I was waiting for a video about this for years
I absolutely love your creative and thought-provoking analysis that you always give! Subscribed.
Thank you sir! 👍👍
The 6th magic is Dave mustaine's ability to make bandmates dissappear
😂😂😂
Lmaooooooooooo
Or they want to go on and do their own thing. Most of his band mates didn't get fired ,they either quit or couldn't handling touring 24/7/365 or wanted to spend more time with their family.( Kiko Loureia left bc he was missing his children grow up).Mustaine has all the say when it comes to Megadeth.
absolutely killer, blistering, heavy riffage, intense, groovy bass lines, exotic and epic solos, all flowing through a thought out structured and story... I may be soundin pretentious but damn what a good song
Don't forget that it has some prog elements going for it. The rhythm and solo section halfway is a really tricky one to play with that 3/4 time signature change
Excellent breakdown...and I have always said 5 magic's was a master piece that was looked over and never given the spot light that it should have. 👍
Even the prince abyss lord?
I love 5 Magics. Took me almost 5 months to master playing this song (guitar).
I'd say try learning the bass part when you play with fingers, but yeah, the guitar part isn't easy.
@@bigguy7353Ellefson plays bass with a pick, not his fingers
Great analysis! I love getting this deep dives on history, structure and composition. You make it shine brighter!
This breakdown was perfect!!!!
This is my favorite song on this album, too! Im so happy seeing a deep dive on this song and the album in general! Well done.
Wow!!! This video went quick 😮. Theory was excellent description even with my lacking knowledge. Lyric analysis is a fantastic description and the depth just mind blowing. Thank you for the video!!!
No thank you for watching man!
If you lack knowledge how do you know it was an excellent description? He might have been completely lying, you wouldn't know. Don't kill me, I'm just kidding. 😊
Jesus man that analysis was awesome, this is also my favorite Rust in peace song. I've always thought "dethrone the evil prince's iron fists, velvet gloves of sin" meant the prince ruled the kingdom with a facade of a decent person, probably dressing well and maintaining a pompous persona for the public eye all the while being the betitular Abyss Lord.
Also also I'm definitely no Dave Mustaine but if you like lyrics that there are more than meets the eye you'll definitely like some songs of mine, please check it out and if you ever feel like something is worth analyzing, I'd be honored. Keep up the good work my man!!
Everything about Rust in Peace is pure perfection
Great channel btw!
Hey thanks man!
I love the way you play the different instuments on piano. To see how they interact.. Great stuff..
Hell yeah, my favorite Megadeth track out of them all. Ashamed how it was never played by the RIP lineup outside of a soundcheck. There are a few things I wanted to add however:
The lyrics have inspo from the book, with the five magics being similar in both the song and the book although he did say they were different, with sorcery, wizardry, alchemy being the same in both.
This song is actually really hard on drums because of the tempo and groove changes, in fact id say it is the hardest megadeth song on drums
a major theme in the novel is thwarted ambition. I dont want to give too much away (because its a great book) but anyone familiar with Dave Mustaines backstory will immediately recognise why he might identify with the main character.
@@chichikov617 He very much was into Satanism when he was fresh out of Metallica. But thankfully that's all in the past now.
Wish I could like this more that once. I have been in love with this album since its release,. Enjoy your analysis, insights and descriptions of modes, bpm, keys, lyrics, isolated tracks, themes. More my Brother!!
Love this channel!! Glad I found it!! Megadeth is my all time fav!! I would love to see the breakdown of the entire album! Such a classic. Thank you for your studies on this!
Hell yes. Do tornado of souls or holy wars next please 🙏
as a guitar player of over 25 years and a huge megadeth fan....i absolutely love the way you use the daw and layering to break down this song in a way i have never heard before, amazing work, subbed for sure
Thanks man! Appreciate it! Will be doing a lot more like this exploring the harmonies and such that can be sometimes difficult to hear otherwise. Check out my video on Nutshell by AiC for more like this!
Excellent video! You did a great job! Congrats!
id say personally to me five magics is the heaviest of rip just because of how distinct, unique and magical it sounds. the give me alchemy bit is amazing, great video.
Five Magics was my personal favorite from “rust in peace” as well!
“Bestow upon me knowledge
Wizard all knowing all wise!”
Great video! I love the song even more. I swear, every song on RIP is top-tier.
what an amazing video... you really need to do a deep dive on Hangar 18 and how many solos and riffs it has this has been so fun to listen to and dissect!
Best breakdown of a song I've ever seen. I would just add that the descending note at the end of the solo indicates (to me) that our hero does indeed die. Which makes sense since he himself is living by the sword. Great job, love the video.
The last 54 seconds are the most exciting thing I’ve heard. So much that use that part for nearly all my food shorts.
Mave Dustaine
Translating that to English is Stomach Dustaine lmao
this video is just as good as the lucretia one pls do bad omen next !
Man this song is my favorite track off of RIP and it’s such a great example of when Megadeth goes technical. The tempo changes throughout this track literally are the foundations of technical death metal. So many techdeath bands look up to rust in peace and Megadeth as one of their many influences.Let’s not forgot Marty’s 4th solo is just absolutely wicked. Me and my friends like to say that Dave played that Elden Ring Beta so that he could write this song 😂😂
Im just speechless from the quality of your work. Seriously impressive. Ive always wanted a channel doing exactly what you are doing in this video. You are supremely talented dude! And you help me understand music theory.
When you said it went from E minor to E phrygian, by going to the F, which i know is the only note thats different in A minor (E phrygian) from E minor. That could be useful in my own songs!
Hey man thank you! If you can learn something about it that is my goal!
@@VARVIS_ its most definitely educational bro👍
Wow, i totally enjoyed this and gave me a whole new view of the song. This is one of the strongest tracks in the album if not the one, and one of the heaviest songs Dave has written in his career. This is my all time fave Megadeth album.
Sounds to me like the ending is doomed, even if the hero beats the Abyss Lord, his corruption has doomed him to simply replace him. The only good outcome would be that they would destroy each other, but then perhaps many good things would also be lost along with the evil since he was a hero at the beginning.
23:25 awwww yeahhhhh. Playing that riff and singing! Magic!
The drums made this album hit hard... Overlooked
Hearing the bass on the piano really makes it even more dark! Thanks for doing that
Well done breakdown. great stuff ;)
The Five Magics jam from the clash of the titans you can find online is insane. Gutted to know that they had this in the locker but never played it live?!!! Great channel dude - love your deep dives and opinions
They eventually did start playing it live in 2010! I got to be at the first show they ever played RIP front to back. The arena went nuts, the crowd crush against the front railing almost took my life😂
@@LectricVonThunder nice one for being there! Yeh I know it’s a shame it was not until then. I wished the Friedman Menza line up had played it live
Thabks for making a vid on one of my favorites!
My pleasure!
This is one of my favorite rhythms to play on guitar. It feels powerful when you play it. I also love playing rust in peace and Polaris.
@VARVIS this video was such a work of art. I rarely leave comments on videos but I can't tell you how much I enjoyed listening to your breakdown of one of my all time favorite songs. Can't wait to hear more!! Be well sir
Awesome analysis bro
Great breakdown of this song. I'll definitely be listening to 5 magics with new ears today.
My Fav on the album too, glad to find someone else who feels the same.
It's my favourite Megadeth Album as well so I guess it might just be my favourite Megadeth song all time.
I’ve got the original vinyl and I’ve had it on two nights straight..now this video pops up .! I’m a serious devotee of Rust in piece, not least because I saw them live in Manchester 91’. Awesome band, records, and song thanks 🙏
Poison Was The Cure is such a thrasher!! I love every song on R.I.P, Countdown & Youthanasia
And he's rocking it in FL too. I love this
I saw them perform this whole album live it was a great show
This is really cool, doing it on piano and going over the intervals
I bought this cd when I was kid, and this song has always fascinated me since I was 17
Hear me out on this one

One of Daves most savage vocal performances ever.. This is the one true case where the original will always overwhem the remaster.. The rest of the album you wont really notice.. But here.. You notice.
Take No Prisoners as well..
Processed with hellish torment, I master magic FIVE!
Hunting the Abyss lord, only one will STAY ALIVE!
I think Dave knows what it really is.the song itself has a eerie feeling that comes with it .maybe doesn't want people to mess with the magic.
Nothing more to say dude, I’m a huge megadeth fan & you fucking nailed it ! You do every time!
Too bad he's entirely wrong. The entire song was inspired by Master of the Five Magics, a fantasy novel by Lyndon Hardy, first published in 1980.
Been waiting a hot ass minute for this exact video 🔥 my top 1 track off that album
I loved the song when it came out, favorite song on the album when I was 14, and now I even know the lyrics, thanks bro 🤘
11yr old me was blown away by this album and the music video for Hanger18
Red: mountains
White: plains
Blue: islands
Green: forests
Black: swamps
You put those out of color wheel order just to piss me off, didn't you? You're that guy who looks through my bulk rares and then puts them back in the wrong boxes.
@n.henzler50 😂😂😂😂
Ha! You’ve mastered five magics
I’ve always felt that this song is absolutely incredible!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
My favourite megadeth song.
Sounds amazing on piano!
I'm so happy this video exists
this is a great video
but man, i was in high school during the early 2000s. Nevermore was VERY popular. the fact that they remixed Enemies of Reality two years later was proof of that
More deep dives on Songs and their meanings.. from Opeth to Dark Tranquillity, etc.. would love to see Dark Tranquillity - Phantom Days.
Also Rainbow - Stargazer..
This is great one 👍👍👍 I do love me some DT but I have also been thinking of maybe some old school In Flames...
@@VARVIS_ 🤘🤘
Absolute banger of a video
This ones always competing for my fave song on the album. This song and "Take no prisoners" suffered the worst fates with the remastered vocals. Theh barely feel like the same songs. I got to see what might have been the first time this song was ever played live on their first stop for their 20th anni tour. Literally one of my best music memories of all time. Fantastic breakdown of this track!
Dave was on some real spiritual shit. He literally, apparently, did a spell to get laid, etc., and was homeless before becoming rich. He has a song called "FFF." Check out the Gematria.
I think he might have been on to something, here.
Yeah is this the song he put the spell in?
The great defect of five magics it is to be the 4th song of the album (not the 5th).
18:32 The 5th solo of the song called five magics is in the part that is in 5/4
You know, thirty some years ago when this music was at it's peak, none of us fans could even imagine that people would be doing actual studies of it. You make me proud, son!
Love this song and your breakdown of the theory and how it mirrors the story.
Might not get clicks but something heavy from Devin Townsend would be a fun deep dive.
I would love to do the Ocean Machine album one day
Yet another under-rated song - crazy exotic solos and much thrashage!!
For those with questions or comments on the truth behind the ‘magics’:
The word is ‘thaumatology’, not ‘thermatology’. (Actually , even then, it’s *thaumaturgy* …)
I’m an expert in Western mysticism, from the Gnostics to Paracelsus and Hermes Trismegistus.
Alchemy was the study of the elements -at that time believed to be five, each present in various quantities to create different substances: (hence so many attempts to make lead into gold: both are soft, heavy metals; however, to someone who believes in the five elements theory of alchemy/chemistry, gold simply contains more fire than does lead-that is why it shines so brightly). The most desirable substance, of course, was the Philosopher’s Stone, which was the ULTIMATE goal of the practise of alchemy. The P.S. was said to heal all wounds, or-indeed-grant eternal life to its possessor. All sort of other abilities were attributed to it, over the years.
One could theoretically distinguish a sorcerer from a wizard via the notion that a sorcerer possesses an innate gift, from birth, that connects him to his inner power, whereas ‘wizard’ literally means ‘wise, or learned, man’-implying this is a man who has learnt his skill to manipulate the supernatural.
Of course, ‘thaumatology’-or as it is properly written, ‘thaumaturgy’ is the capability of a magician to work magic or other paranormal events, or the capacity of a saint to perform miracles. We might also call it ‘wonder-working’, or ‘miracle-working’. This is a bit redundant, no doubt.
Lastly…yeah…we all know electricity isn’t magic, but they would not have known it in mediaeval times. Just as gunpowder was an invention of alchemists, as full of crap most of their theories were. It got them to mix sulphur with potash, though…and…Surprise! Gunpowder.
Electricity might as well be magic imo. I am interested in your opinion of the video I did on the song "Rapture" by morbid angel and would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Also what would your thoughts be on other Megadeth songs with occult themes like the Conjuring?
Awesome video, subscribed!
my favorite song on the album...this break down was awsum thank's for this...MegadetH rule's
I always wonder why the rest of Megadeth's catalogue never lived up to this album.
Also, the riff underneath the dual vocal part is so simple yet so perfect.
So I think people say it’s in a minor cuz e Phrygian has a relative major of C making the relative minor A. Since e Phrygian technically isn’t a key if you were to write it out in notation you would make the key signature w no sharps or flats which could be read as a minor or c major
Makes total sense thank you 🙏🏻
I really really like that you explain theory here! Please do it more, especially on Death songs
Great video. Watched it over breakfast. This has set the tone for my day. 🤘
Hell yeah brother 👍
I NAMED MY SORCERESS CHARACTER IN DIABLO 2 FIVE MAGICS
THIS SONG GOES SO WELL WITH THE DIABLO AND ELDER SCROLLS SERIES!!
I always knew this had something to do with black magic, but I never realized it had such a story in it.
You just made a great track ever greater
Creeping Death would be a cool one to dive into!
Absolutely!
The way i've always interpreted the lyrics is that the hero pretty much becomes the Abyss Lord, he becomes the very thing he sought to destroy as he was blinded by his quest for power.
Great analysis as always. Sad to know that the Morbid Angel and Nevermore videos didn't get many views, they're also some of my favorites.
Its alright man, I knew they were more obscure songs. Its a fine balancing act between what will get views and the songs I really want to do. Luckily Rust In Peace songs fit that perfectly. Cheers bro!
My favorite Dave solo!
This was an awesome analysis, thanks for making it!
More to come!
