      Original names were not after cities, but after historical battles. Two from Crimean war and two from Peter The Great era. Naming was consistent. Locations themselves were from different eras/places/origins. One got Swedish origin. Other is Ukrainian. Third is pseudo-Helenic. Last one is after two saints.

      It is built before WW1. Even post war refits were done before air power was a thing. They knew that AA is not adequate and refits did increase AA capability.
      1 AA gun is from English specs. Image shows AA guns mounted on each turret. They were not mounting quarter of a gun on each turret. Russian book referenced in wikipedia talks about two 75 or 68 mm and one 47mm Hotchkiss gun and ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:Battleship_Marat_12-inch_bow_triple_turret.jpg (and 2:35 photo in video) matches it. Initial plans were for 4x4 QF-3 Hotchkiss according to Russian sources, but they did not have enough of those or they lost lots of them in Tsushima.

    Note the more modern looking "clipper" bows and pagoda style superstructures. Big problem with ships that had their turrets spaced between engine rooms was that despite the best efforts, the difference in temperatures of the ammunition meant greater dispersion of salvos. Second problem was the lack of space to add AA guns without interfering with firing arcs. Third problem was where to put fire controls, radar and radio compartments. The Japanese and American navies had the same problem with their prewar designs.

    Some trivia; The class is named in honour of the first Russian naval victory at Rilax, but since the Russians didn't know local geography very well and knew it was in the general vicinity of the Hangö peninsula, or to the local Swedish, Hangö Udd, but do some linguistic differences that had arisen in the two Indo-European languages, the Russian pronunciation bore out in the transliteration, and Hangö Udd somehow became Gangut or using a more contemporary transliteration, Khangud.

      even modernized she had less armour than a WW1 British Battlecruiser even Kongo is heavily armoured compared to Gangut not to mention how slow she was by WW2 standards in WW2 the Russians borrowed an old obsolete R class Battleship from the British and that ship was easily the most powerful ship in the entire Soviet Navy. In any gun duel between a modernized Gangut and even a Kongo or a 1930 HMS Tiger let alone a Scharnhorst Gangut is just an XP piñata

    can you make one of your short videos that explains the differences between pre-dreadnought, dreadnought, dreadnought 2, and super dreadnought?

    • @tokul76
      @tokul76 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pre-dreadnought - various assortment of guns and majority in secondary or tertiary caliber.
      dreadnought - namesake ship, 11-12 inch main battery, lots of big guns, experiments with turret layout, 20k ton displacement
      dreadnought 2 - no such thing
      super-dreadnought - 13-14+ in batteries, far less experiments with turret layouts
      Or maybe your dreadnought 2 fits 25k ton/13-14 inch guns and supers are 30k+ tons with 15-16+ inch guns. Then you might ask for battlecruiser and fast battleship explanation too.
      Just see how preceding and superseding classes for HMS Dreadnought look like.

    I would like to explain the naming a little bit:
    Gangut was named after Battle of Gangut in 1714 where Peter the Great galleys cornered and defeated Swedish Fleet.
    Sevastopol was renamed to "Parizhskaya Kommuna" (Paris Commune) - a socialist government which ruled Paris in 1871.
    Petropavlosk was renamed to "Marat" - after Jean-Paul Marat, one of the politicians during the French Revolution. He was the guy who managed to get stabbed in the bath...
    Poltava was renamed to Frunze - after Mikhail Frunze, one of bolsheviks military leaders

    • @dayaautum6983
      @dayaautum6983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing worse than a ship named after a guy who got stabbed in the bath tub would be a bath bomb named after him.
      I must confess however, I do like both ideas as they are ghastly enough to have a delightfully over the top morbid appeal.
      Not that anyone in Russia did or would ask for my approval, but I approve.
