If you know of anywhere you would like explored, or have a historic property you would like us to document, please let us know.
There was a time before rock and pop
Before the swinging 60s and the roaring 20s
A time before social security and the welfare state..
That time was a time of hardship and poverty.
But also of hope and freedom and glamour.
A time of factory shutdowns, and yearly train trips.
Of seaside esplanade and fun fairs, and grand piers!
Birnbeck pier was designed bu Eugenious Birch, and opened in 1867.
It remained open until 1994 when it officially closed to the public.
This pier is unique, being the only British pier that links a natural island to the main land.
Now. Some people may think that actually makes it merely a bridge, and not a pier at all.
But those people would be wrong, as any resident of Weston will quickly tell them.
The pier is now owned by North Somerset council, who purchased from the previous owners in July 2023, after spending nearly 3 decades refusing planning permission for them to develop the site.
During this time the pier has deteriorated into a dangerous derelict eyesore.
They now plan to spend millions of pounds of tax payers money restoring it to its original condition.
Presumably no one has told them that the glory days for British seaside towns have long passed, and the reason it closed down in 1994 was because it couldn't turn a profit.
Never mind, at least it's not actually their money that they're spending!

Flew here myself on many occasions. Would be nice to see it restored to its former glory.

A lot of locals have very fond memories here. I just can't see it paying for itself as a second pier in present times.

There is a 'pivotal' meeting in North Somerset Council on the 7th of February 2024 to decide the future of the no-profit pier and its surroundings.
Given that NSC bought the Sovereign Centre with public money that makes a loss for example, it is difficult to understand how, when they are cutting bin collections to every three weeks now to save money, how they can consider spending millions of pounds on this not for profit vanity scheme.
Yes, we woulkd all like to see Birnbeck Pier restored but it has to be done as part of a financially viable scheme.

I know a lot of locals have very fond memories of this pier, but times move on wether we like it or not. British councils are totally out of touch with reality. My understanding is that they have turned down several viable schemes for redevelopment, and now the place is probably beyond any sort of development. It's a pity we can't make them pay for their incompetence out of their own pockets!

I'm still learning, so the flying a bit jerky, but hopefully improving all the time.

The other pier in Weston-Super-Mare, you have to pay a quid to get in, it's shut down in the evenings, and inside it's just a glorified amusement arcade.

It's sad the state of British seaside towns. Councils are desperate for money, mainly due to their own incompetence. Unfortunately I can't see things improving anytime soon.

Hey, thanks for the comment. I like uphill beach too. And there are lots of places to explore around here. I do think it's sad about the old pier, but times do change and we have to move on.

I spent many a good evening at the bar at the end of Birkbeck pier this became a battle for the owner that went on for years every application was rejected eventually sold it to a millionaire called da savoury not shore he favoured any better ? this is some nice drone footage which probably not accessible by foot or if it is dangerous

Did someone say an "evening at the bar!" Now that is a good idea. Glad it bought back some memories, although sad to see it now. Those were the days 👍

maybe the solution is to tear it down and turn it into a bird sanctuary with limited public access. yes it would be a shame but it looks beyond saving. using the causeway at load tide to being in heavy machinery could be an option.

I think there's been many proposals over the years, but the council just refused them all, now it may be beyond saving.
