I'm so happy at 59 I've already visualized the neck but not to the extent you have, anything you put out for us is so useful and helpful, and ya, the outside concepts are awesome, Who wants to always play inside all the time anyway! Thanks, Big Time Darryl,
very helpful approach. i'm working on this sporadically for the last 2 years, but I still can't hit and visualize the patterns when speeding horizontally across the fretboard. btw. there are also possibilities to easily incorporate the blue note or diminished fifth, paul gilbert shows this in a lesson he did.
I myself figured out a long time ago taking the simple pentatonic & rearrange it into 3 note per string patterns. I then realised that I don't really use a legato technique I modified more using a from low too high a 3,1,3,1,3,1 pattern so now it's using economy picking. I was really pleased with myself until I noticed that Frank Gambale had beaten me too it!But I worked it out without knowing that he'd already done it so I suppose that by searching I sorted out a method too spice up the pentatonic? It opens up new doors because you can play all your old licks the old way,but transposing them too this method you can play faster & more fluent without breaking a sweat!!!! Great video by the way!!
Hi Ricky, I cover the stuff your talking about in my Cool Legato Phrases 1 and 2, Pentatonic Passages, and Supersonic Sweeping courses. Try this 313313. By doing this you'll get a broader range. Of course you can play 3 NPS with no repeated notes and get and even broader range. th-cam.com/video/vBQIYXqf9Js/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/ogjJV05wBTk/w-d-xo.html
@@derrylgabel Yes I do that too!! It came from frustration at around 7 years of age that the older players I looked upto could play faster than me. I looked closely at what I was doing & decided then too change my approach towards the way I played!! This was around 1986-87 so possibly before Frank Gambale released his series of AMAZING tuition videos!! That's why I thought I'd invented it at the time because a teacher I was with hadn't seen anything like it & then on the strength of that I got included into a band he'd put together for students studying their A Levels in music (they were all between 16 years old & 18 years old & I was 7 when I joined & 8 when we played our first show! The band was called Rock School & I basically arranged all the scores for the set of Toto songs (Rosanna,Africa,99 & Love Has The Power) which I played all the guitar solos which too this day I'm so proud of & also the trust Richard had in me too let me do them!!! But back too the economy picking,Frank Gambale obviously came up with it before me but I didn't see him do it until I figured it out for myself but again others must be the same too!!? Michael Angelo Batio also lit a fuse under me when I first saw a clinic he did for Washburn guitars when I was 11 back in 1990!!! He was incredible & a really nice guy too who saw me play & liked it & gave me good encouragement & some valuable advice!! I also met Peter Frampton around this time & he liked my playing & gave me wise words of encouragement & I couldn't get over the fact at his lack of physical stature (I'm not very tall & I'm skinny too!) but he was amazing with a warm nature & great sense of humour!!! Anyway I praise your work!!
Derryl, love your lessons! I've a question. I like to practice exercises, all over the neck, from the first fret until the last', with a metronome. I've done it with the exercises of this video but still I wonder if it's in this case a good idea. Besides the big stretch, as you 'walk' up the neck, gradually you start to use different fingers for the same patron. What do you suggest to do, or not to do?
Bottom line is you want to be able to see all the pentatonic positions this way. Next you want to create melodies, lines, licks, sequences, etc... using these shapes. You can exercise those with a metronome or a backing track. I recommend a backing track. Then you can play the lines in different subdivisions and rhythms. For more pentatonic ideas I recommend my Pentatonic Passages and Cool Legato Phrases 1 and 2. store.derrylgabel.net/
Very cool stuff Derryl , I really like this approach...wish I had found it when I was younger....BTW do you still have a link to your version of Tierra del fuego....Thanks !

"And the coach says bend over.......and touch your toes "
Excellent comic pause there, Mr Gabel
Great stuff! Really like the Outside Secrets in the megapak too, especially the coverage of the Parker and Coltrane approaches.
Very cool
Amazing as always 👍
Nice Derryl, thanks for sharing.

Yup. I look at the scale 3 and 4 notes per string....🙄😄😊👍

What program do you use for guitar tablature ??!
I use Guitar Pro 7 for guitar tab. For Neck Diagrams I use a program called Neck Diagrams.
@@derrylgabel oh ok. Thnx Derryl.
I have to download those to my Mac.

@@derrylgabel Thanx for your answer! I know all the pentatonic positions and will learn them all in the way of this video!
Can I ask what the scale length is on that guitar? I am learning the Metal Fatigue solo and it's too hard on a strat neck. (7 to 13)
It's 25 and a half. I'm 6' 1" and my hands are as large as Allan's. I think Allan was 6' 1" too.
@@derrylgabel Thanks. I'm 6' 1" but my fingers are kinda short. Keep up the great work Sir!
This is awesome, does one of your courses go into more detail on this approach?
Yes, Pentatonic Passages. There's also sections in Cool Legato Phrases 1 and 2.
Thanks, I just recently purchased cool legato phrases 1, and I'll be sure to check out the others. Love your videos!
Thank you. You are a " godfather " guitarrist. Lol

George or his management had it taken down. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a link to where to find it.
