Thank you for posting this essential information about binding off, something that most videos about binding off fail to cover. I knit a lot of market bags that have a long strap, so you have to bind off X number of stitches around the top of the bag, then work Y number of stitches, then back to binding off X number of stitches, and finally working the last Y number of stitches. Thank goodness I had friends who knit, and they helped me with counting bind off stitches. I always count bound off stitches out loud. Then you have to remember that your last bound off stitch in a section is also your first stitch in the working section that follows. Your explanation about thinking in terms of binding off columns instead of stitches was new to me, and I will remember to do that. Many thanks!
This was SO helpful to me. I was sailing through what seemed to be an easy pattern today when I came against this very scenario. The only difference was the the pattern writer instructed to knit to the marker (previously placed), then bind off stitches until the next marker. I was at a total standstill. I wasn't even sure I'd even find a video on how to do it, or quite how to even word a search. Yay for me, your video was the first hit!
Thank you *so much* for clarifying this for me. I needed a refresher in binding off in the middle of patterns and this was perfect! Particularly your tip on looking at counting the bound off stitches by the columns, rather than the chains. That was really tripping me up! Thanks again! I think I'll subscribe to your channel for more help as I need it in your down-to-earth, efficient, common sensical style of teaching. =)
My pattern makes me so confused. It says "K3,P3 * repeat 6 more times" and then it says that I should bind off 6 sts in the beginning. But when I do bind them off it's not an even so I can K3,P3. What am I doing wrong..?
Without seeing the pattern, it sounds like you are binding off 3 knit stitches and 3 purl stitches. If the pattern is a multiple of 6, this should work out fine. After binding off the 6 stitches your live stitch is the first stitch in the next set of 3.
