Lyrics:
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free
While God is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on
Played in church for my fathers funeral mass, WWII navy sailor. Miss you Dad
"In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea..." ALWAYS gives me goosebumps and I tear up.
Best version I have heard from a Canadian
Was at this show----just a wonderful memory===Thanks John.
John I can listen to you sing all day. Gives me goosebumps to hear such a wonderful voice.
dear Mr McDermott. I am from cape town south africa and had much irish religious influence in my childhood; catholic priests nuns brothers and learned many of the songs you sing, I lost my dad 3 years ago and heard your song the old man, on the radio last week, this was the first time I'd heard your voice. Wow! how beautiful, you are blessed with an amazing gift. I teared up listening to the emotion and truths you sang. well i have memorised the song and will enjoy the memories forever. thank you, I then looked up all your songs and have listened to most. my dad loved the bagpipes and I did not know there were words to scotland the brave. I think I have it almost memorised. but your Danny Boy was the absolute best rendition I have ever heard. Thank you, thank you...keep up the good work. regards Sean Adams
Sean Adams Sean, I'm sorry if I've given you the wrong impression, but unfortunately I am not John McDermott (As great as that would be). Your letter was very touching though, may I suggest sending the letter to his charity in Canada.
Maith an fear sean.

Best rendition I've heard.
I love it too.
Yes brilliant rendition..could listen to John forever!
Finally a version with gusto! Original Lyrics "As He died to make men Holy, let us die to make men free"
I know I commented 2 years ago, but I have to say, and I hope Mr. McDermott can one day see this, that I have seen many versions of this Hymn, but I have NEVER seen a better one! I still get chills up and down my spine when the women appear in the Scottish Tartans. I am part Scotch myself, and to me this is a clear indication that this song is not meant only for the United States, nor should it be seen only as a Civil War song. It is a Christian Hymn that I think is meant for the world. Thank you for giving me this excellent version, sir!
I love that he performs this as a marching song, which is was - a battle hymn in ever sense of the word. It is almost impossible to find it performed as anything but a dirge today.
True that!
As I used to say to the choir director at church -- "Just play it *properly*!"
Great singing! Stirring rendition! Love it!
Beautiful rendition…
Was fortunate to see this show in person----night I will never forget---absolutely a terrific performance by a very talented performer.
Love John's strong voice
Wow. Great for you.
This is certifiably the greatest performance of this song. Wish I could see it in person.
@@hawkrecon5496 it’s fabulous.
@@hawkrecon5496 I loved it when I saw it PBS.
As a kid of 6 or 7 and I was scared like a thunderstorm was breaking I sang this song to calm myself down .
the United States of America stays as a great country till they carry the freedom to the nations seeking that.
This their faith and destiny.
You are my favorite singer,
Beautiful and stirring, as is your "Scotland the Brave."
Glad you enjoyed them.
What a wonderful, powerful rendition of a song most closely associated with the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War! That was a bloody, hard-fought war. The result of it was that the Union was once again intact and, more importantly, slavery was ended in the U.S.! They literally did "live to make men free."
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free****
**The original lyrics
Those are the lyrics during times of war. The lyrics during times of peace are "Let us live to make men free."
crosstimbers2 I think the song is more impactful with that original word in the song.
I always thought it was "Let us strive to make men free." Implying a never-ending struggle.
The version still performed by a military choir
The original lyrics, penned in November, 1861 by Julia Ward Howe in the Willard Hotel, two blocks from the White House, came to her in the middle of the night. She arose from her bed, and immediately put them to paper lest she fall back asleep and forget them. They were her lyrics, put to the music of the abolitionist song, "John Brown's Body Lies A-mouldering In his Grave." And they were, "As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free." To change the lyrics takes them out of this great historic context.
Wonderful. Many thanks for posting this.

THIS SONG MAKES ME PROUD TO SAY " IM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN !!! "
You have nothing to be proud of . Guns homlessness animal cruelty etc wars you started. Cop on you amadan
Fantastic song Bill. Check out the Pogues song called Body of an American. Different type of song, Irish punk style, but it's got a brilliant beat to it, and the pipes at the end are excellent. Regards from Ireland.
I was tooling up for destruction, but damn it's not a bad version
Belíssima voz. Vi vários videos seus. Parabéns.

Today we live in a world which denies our Heavenly Father, His Son who paid the ultimate price, and our own spirit. We need to remember we are ALL his children. Be at Peace.
Despite the papacy, despite the WEF, despite the political corruption, despite godless agendas, GOD's TRUTH will prevail.
Found this singing "Gloria Labandera" In Google Search a song
crosstimbers2. True: it entirely changes the meaning of the song.
Besides there's a missing stanza, which is almost always omitted. Why?
Oh for Pete's Sakes, he could sing anything-he's suckin up to ye
Very holsome reminds me of our great President D. Trump
Hail Dixie
This is a song ALL Christians can sing. Well done!
!
Not too shabby for a Scottish-Canadian, eh?

I am a devoted fan of John's and this is a beautiful rendition but those men DO NOT KNOW HOW TO MARCH. Look how sloppily they move. That is not the sort of military precision any good soldiers would ever be allowed to display. A minor goof, perhaps, but since the guys were on the stage to dramatize the song, somebody should have made sure they got it right!

Shame lack of practice shews up with the marching.

Sounds of silence
The show ruins the message, too bad. The modernity gave us the wrong line : Let us live to make men free.
The original reads : let us die to make men free. The logic of the original is immanent.
Yes, the original lyric was a reference to the Civil War then raging. However, since we are no longer fighting a war to free a captive people from bondage and slavery, the rewritten lyric makes more sense - "Let us live our lives in such a way that leads to increased freedom for everyone".
Substituting "live" for "die" destroys the entire message of the song, betrays the author's intent, and castrates a motivationally strong battle song, mutating it into a weak, cowardly excuse of a song so that it ends up as more of a whine than anything else. I would be ashamed to perform it as it is here presented.
ouch how corny
This song was made for a chorus.
This just doesn’t sound right.
Nazy hymn
AMHRAN NA BHFIANN. YOU PLASTIC PADDY
Great voice, do not care for the yankee song.
