Hey Capt Zac- another epic video that put an exclamation point on the adventures that son, Erik, and I shared with you last year. That day we truly put the pieces of equation for success that you so boldly proclaim every time that we fish with you. "Premium spot at a premium time (tidewise) with premium bait" are the 3 main ingredients for success. You captured the essence of that magic bite that I got where the halibut sucked the 7oz Fire-Eye jig just as the lure was dropping to the bottom. It seemed like the jig fell right into his open mouth and he meant business. True magic in which all 3 pieces of the success equation happened in an instant! I look fwd to fishing that spot again this summer with a couple friends. Will be sure to tell them Capt Zac pegged this as a promising spot after a careful scan of the nautical charts for the area. Hint- that might be a good topic to cover on a future video...... "How to scan the charts to find potentially good hali-spots!". We have always done well at Waters Edge. Started with Doc Warner’s but the fishing and scenery there at Elfin Cove is amazing. We have caught several Halibut over 100 pounds.
I switched to jigging years ago but based on what I have seen you use, I think we have used the wrong set up. I noticed that the open bail reel that you use allows you to keep the tension tight-critical to keeping the jig in the Halibut’s mouth. I believe your motto is “Keep it tight”.
Wow, what a day of great halibut fishing! Unbelievable. Yesterday was the Homer winter king derby. 103 fish caught by 1450 fishers. Winner was 27+, second place just over 20. Quite a few in the teens. Makes me want to go out! Maybe tomorrow…

@@CaptainZac The amazing part is that the first place fish was caught by the brother of the 10-yr old who caught the winning fish last year! Also amazing is that I saw a 3-some come up from one boat with three 12 - 15 pound kings. Three in one boat! In the area that they were fishing that means that they all limited. That's one part of fishing that always amazes me. My dad would say "you just gotta hold your mouth right", whatever that means.
Wow that's insane - either some crazy good luck, very good technique, or a bit of both! Haha yes indeed sometimes it can be a total mystery why one angler will light them up and another will struggle - even in the same area with the same tactics!

Zac, it was great to see your box full of nice Halibut fish. Looks like the 3 of you had a very successful Halibut run with beautiful weather. Have you ever had a rod snap trying to pull in a large fish or lose your grip and the rod fall in the ocean? With such large fish and the drag, it must be a difficult to land some of those fish.
Hi Ben thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed - it was a lot of fun catching halibut in good weather on this outing. Haha good question! I've never personally had a rod snap while battling a halibut (we've had a few reels malfunction though!) but I know plenty of people who have either experienced a snapped rod during the battle or they lose the rod all together (usually not paying attention and the fish just pull the rod overboard!). You nailed it - with bigger fish, it is all about correctly setting the drag and slowly playing them out. Have you ever broke or lost a rod during a battle with a big fish? Tight lines my friend! @@CaptainZac I haven't had a rod snap either. I think it would be a real nightmare as you probably never catch the fish to remove the hook, really bad for the fish.

I like the active style of fishing and the big hookset right when you feel the bite (vs. waiting for the fish to hook themselves on a circle hook). @@CaptainZac yeah I live here in Washington we fish mostly out of Port Angeles for halibut and we use mostly circle hooks I'll be up in Homer for 5 days this July for hali's and salmon, I'd love to come fish with you guys sometime do you charter or are those just mostly friends

after years of watching international deep jig fishing, I've wanted to try a setup like theirs with the big spinning reel and a vertical jig rod. I think your videos are the only ones i've seen where it's not a conventional reel.

I think i'll try it this year. I've been flipping around websites to get an idea of what the gear will cost. I want one of those proper knife jig rods that'll do full pulls, made to work well with 90 degree bends. This is also the year i'm FINALLY going to make my own lead filled, copper pipe jigs. I've seen/read so much about them but don't personally know anyone who uses them. At this point, I have no design preferences so i'm going to try them all. hooks high or middle. ..dangling assist hooks vs big treble vs J. hoochie or nothing... I'm not sure of the science behind them as far as fishing goes, but the galvanic cell is definitely real.

I'm pretty efficient at the fillet table but trimming and vacuum sealing a huge pile of fillets certainly can take some time (which can be draining at the end of of long day on the water) - but totally worth it! Awesome catches. Love the underwater shots. Hope to get on some this spring but it's tough we are only allowed to fish for them 3 days a week. What's the limit there? We get 4 per year. 👍

Under sport fishing regulations in Southeast Alaska, we are allowed 2 halibut per person per day any size (no annual limit). Sounds like your regulations are a little more restrictive. Zac, it was great to see your box full of nice Halibut fish. Looks like the 3 of you had a very successful Halibut run with beautiful weather. Have you ever had a rod snap trying to pull in a large fish or lose your grip and the rod fall in the ocean? With such large fish and the drag, it must be a difficult to land some of those fish.
Hi Ben thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed - it was a lot of fun catching halibut in good weather on this outing. Haha good question! I've never personally had a rod snap while battling a halibut (we've had a few reels malfunction though!) but I know plenty of people who have either experienced a snapped rod during the battle or they lose the rod all together (usually not paying attention and the fish just pull the rod overboard!). You nailed it - with bigger fish, it is all about correctly setting the drag and slowly playing them out. Have you ever broke or lost a rod during a battle with a big fish? Tight lines my friend! @@CaptainZac I haven't had a rod snap either. I think it would be a real nightmare as you probably never catch the fish to remove the hook, really bad for the fish.

I like the active style of fishing and the big hookset right when you feel the bite (vs. waiting for the fish to hook themselves on a circle hook). That said, many people use circle hooks successfully for halibut. Do you prefer circle hooks? Tight lines! Captain Zac
@@CaptainZac yeah I live here in Washington we fish mostly out of Port Angeles for halibut and we use mostly circle hooks I'll be up in Homer for 5 days this July for hali's and salmon, I'd love to come fish with you guys sometime do you charter or are those just mostly friends
@@ervintaylor6508 Yeah the commercial fishermen all use circle hooks so those are definitely proven to hook halibut. Awesome that you'll be coming up to Homer for a week! Sounds like you'll be filling some fish boxes! Although I do have my USCG Captain's License, I'm not doing paid charters at this point (still navigating a day job as well). after years of watching international deep jig fishing, I've wanted to try a setup like theirs with the big spinning reel and a vertical jig rod. I think your videos are the only ones i've seen where it's not a conventional reel.

I think i'll try it this year. I've been flipping around websites to get an idea of what the gear will cost. I want one of those proper knife jig rods that'll do full pulls, made to work well with 90 degree bends. This is also the year i'm FINALLY going to make my own lead filled, copper pipe jigs. I've seen/read so much about them but don't personally know anyone who uses them. At this point, I have no design preferences so i'm going to try them all. hooks high or middle. ..dangling assist hooks vs big treble vs J. hoochie or nothing... I'm not sure of the science behind them as far as fishing goes, but the galvanic cell is definitely real.
No mention of size restriction on a guided trip…..

I'm using a Penn Slammer III 8500 (High speed model) spinning reel spooled with 80lb Power Pro (braided line) on a Penn Carnage II Jigging rod (spinning model - they make a conventional model as well for baitcasting reels).
