I just tried your method. Only thing I didn’t have to do was take the zipper off my dress. I only cut the plastic stopper and then slide the side that was off on. Thank you so much. You totally helped me save money from going to a seamstress.
THANK YOU!!! The zipper was actually stuck on my pillowcase, not a dress, but after some trial and error, this actually worked! Phew! Honestly who designed these zippers?? Lol They always seems to get caught at the worst times 🤣
It can be really tricky and take some time and patience. Be sure you’re going from the little slot in the front of the zipper pull. It also may just be a bad zipper. I hope that helps and you’re able to get it. Maybe step away from it and come back later.

A bar of soap can also be helpful to lubricate a zipper. Just rub it along the teeth. And then you won’t have graphite stains on the dress

I could get the zipper on track easily
