60 - 69: A below average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.

A few weeks ago, I tasted my way through many of the best wines of Germany at the VDP PrePremiere. There where 452 wines from the best sites, and most of the best producers were available to taste, and I went through them and selected my favorites, as I have done in the past videos. This time, however, I don’t just want to focus on Germany’s flagship varietals Riesling and Spätburgunder, instead I want to show you my favorites by grape variety, including 6 of the main varietals grown in Germany …
Germany has done a good job of getting people to understand that Riesling and Pinot Noir grow well here. But only roughly a third of the vineyards are planted to those two varietals. There are other varietals than produce great wines, and I want to share my current favorites from the VDP Tasting with you.
The VDP - The Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter - is an organization of most the best produers in Germany and during the VorPremiere they give a selected group of tasters access to the most recent Grand Cru - or Grosses Gewächs - releases from those wineries. The overall quality of the wines is extremely high and I could have put together a completely different list of great wines but these are the ones that stood out for me.
I also need to add that more than 80% of the wines at this tasting were made from Riesling and Pinot Noir so the competition for 1st place was FAR more intense in those categories than for - let's say - Grauburgunder. But now, lets start sniffing and slurping.

I know this would add an immense amount of editing compared to the amount you need to do now, but for those of us less familiar with European geography or wine culture, it would be immeasurably helpful and engaging if there was a map that popped up whenever you mentioned a region, location, or vineyard. This applies to all videos, not just Germany of course.
Google maps is pretty easy to use I do it all the time.

Konstantin, could you do these videos for multiple regions? It is really amazing to see you recommend specific wines and give us the background of the wineries. I am really eager to try the Salwey wines now. I was hoping you could do something similar for other underappreciated regions like Alsace, Alto-Adige or Rias Baixas and show off a selection of a range of the best wines that a given region has to offer.
Müller-Thurgau i would say. Not because it’s superior to anything else, but because it does remind me of my childhood holidays (it fascinated me because it sounded like someone’s name :).
Just about 30 years ago I worked for a German as his first and only ever Wine Steward. He always insisted that we have a Moselblümchen on the list.
Great to see more content on German wines! I'll be in Frankfurt for a one night layover later in the year and I'm looking forward to checking out the local wines.
GREAT video… I love German wines to death and am blown away by the quality of Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder there. My dream is make it down to Wurttemberg to discover those wines in depth more.
Great selection of producers there. The Hundsruck Spatburgunder is one of my favorite Pinot Noirs of all time.

Lately I've been checking hybrid variants a lot, mainly to determine which ones to plant myself. Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet cortis, souvignier Gris,... Would love to find out what your opinion is on those hybrids. Most of them were developed in Germany if I'm not mistaken. And can they quality wise match the classic ones.
Love your videos. As a Greek I'm surprised I haven't seen any greek wines on your channel yet. Any plans to cover them in the future?
Riesling is still king for me. Gewürtz and Kerner as well. The sweeter expressions are so popular for a reason - they’re frickin fabulous. My favourite producer is from Bingen called Hildegardishof but the quality and sheer volume of wines in the region is very high as you know. Love your videos!
I had a couple of good Silvaner this summer. Weingut am Stein, Stahl or Ilmbacher Hof are names I can recommend.
I have been fortunate to try some older Auslese gewurztraminer from the Pfalz. They were magnificent. We tried them against some Domaine Weinbach Grand Cru Gewurztraminer. The complexity of the flavors and the intense sugar was amazing.
As we have over 800h of sun this days in summer, you just described our wine tour through Germany next year in summer.

Dornfelder is one my all time favorite German varietals! It's the Petite Sirah/Petite Verdot of Germany! (At least in terms of color, body, concentration, and intensity.) There's a Santa Barbara winery here in the States that does a single varietal of Dornfelder (Pali Wine) and it is insanely good!
Fürst!!! I remember when I visited the winery of fürst with some friends once a year for a tasting and we bought some packages every time. It was great every time. He and his wife were so friendly! By the way his spirits are as good as his wines! Menawhile we can't afford these trips anymore: He became to expensive for us. What a pitty because I loved his Frühburgunder so much!
Always a pleasure to watch! I do love Weissburgunder, especially from Baden. I guess that you are familiar with the wines of Martin Wassmer? One of my fav. Beside all the already named grapes, I do like also Scheurebe, dry or sweet. Finally in an ocean of very hard to drink dry gewürtz, Dönnhoff made once a stellar one...did you try it?
I love your allusion to hangings having taken place in the area in the past to the taste of the wine now. It makes me wonder if any of the great battles of history are now the home of vineyards. I imagine so. Bloodbordeaux? Corpsechardonnay? Writhingreislings?

I love Frühburgunder too, but it‘s really rare to find, isn’t it? Guess, because this variety is even more complicated than Spätburgunder/Pinot noir is.
@@michaelbrueckmer7890 Yes, it is not so easy to find. However there are various producers such as Fürst who produce Frühburgunder on a regular basis. Various producers in Pfalz and Ahr are producing it as well. So I am sure, it would not be so hard to find 4 or 5 wines to produce a video on this very interesting varietal.

Thank you. Very good show. I live in Japan and unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much availability of these wines. They do seem to be great value and maybe some of us forget the long history of winemaking in Germany.
Little correction on what you say at around Minute 16: It wasn`t Rudolf and Monica Fürst! It was Paul and Monica. Paul named the wineyard after his father. I enjoy wines from Fürst very much, even the entry level Pinot, the "Tradition" is an outstanding wine (except for maybe in years like 2021 and probably 2022). The Riesling Großes Gewächs is just wonderfull, on the Hundsrück I can not comment, because they tell me allways I am too late when I want to buy some.
Another great video with awesome content, Konstantin. I particularly enjoyed the fact that you highlighted wines beyond the duopoly of Riesling & Spatburgunder. Lemberger. Grauburgunder & Weissburgunder have a lot of potential. As Martin Wassmer Weingut won two Platinum medals at the DWWA 2022, a Weissburgunder & Sauvignon Blanc. Also coming from Baden it was nice to see two wines from Salwey showcased in this video. Just a question, I am wondering if you would consider doing a video on wines with a high QPR or around the 20--30 Euro/U.S.$ price range. As it's great to see that Germany can make outstanding high quality wines, however sometimes you just want something nice, but also more affordable.

These all sound beautiful. My fave German wine is quite light, I love it for its consistency year on year, and it's value for money. Notably excellent to drink whilst writing, I refer of course to the modest (9%ABV) Piesporter Michelsburg, humble yet noble.. Cheers! 🌟👍

Hey Konstantin, can you make a video on affordable aged wines (>30 years old)? Can be interesting!
Would be interesting to know about german online shops (that ship abroad, particularly the UK😁) where we can find these wines. Maybe you'd fall into a conflict of interest but another idea would be for you to partner with some retailer to sell mixed cases.
Love your videos. But I really can‘t help but wonder what you‘re doing with all these beautiful wines after you‘ve opened the bottles.
Oh my god, what a question. Apart from Grauburgunder (which is also no bad wine for me) I love them all and if I am allowed to give a hint to our international friends here I would recommend trying Lemberger to them because it shows that Germany can produce other great reds apart from Pinot Noir!
Last but not least also like Scheurebe and Rieslaner very much (sad that both varieties are into decline) but I am pretty sure that they are difficult to find in most countries outside Germany (and Austria for the Scheu).
For concentration of flavour and it´s ability to be paired with so many types of food I really find Scheurebe so under rated. That though keeps the prices low so you can enjoy some amazing wines for very little money.
I too love scheurebe! But I have trouble finding REALLY GOOD scheurebe; do you have any tips?!

I would love to see you taste and rate some Trollinger / Schiava. I think it's a very interesting grape variety that you didn't cover here and I am sure the grape feels quiet eneglected...
So, I wonder what the harvest tonnage per hectare is @ Pechstein? That could have a lot to do with the concentration of the wine.
A favorite "alternate" variety would be Scheurebe, especially from Rainer Lingenfelder. Find some! 😄

Eschendorfer Lump such a classic Franconian and I was born right by Steinburg in Franken, so simpler wines but also near and dear to my Heart! Hans Wirsching also a favorite Franconian... Hi Konstantin, it would be great if you could make a video about Scheurebe. I think it is a very typical german variety and can also produce very high quality, although it is somehow not very popular of reasons I don't know.
I too appreciate Scheurebe! I prefer trocken and Kabinett (Kabinett trocken!) but am open for even higher prädikater. My biggest concern is finding GOOD scheurebe! Anybody have any tips on really good scheurebe??

could you make a video on austrian wines? This would be cool, since I live in the beautiful 23rd disctrict in Vienna, where we have some excellent wines nearby in the town of Perchtoldsdorf. Not many people know a lot about austrian wines, yet there are still great wineries in this country. It would be interesting to see how you rate the austrian wines.

Austrian blaufränkisch and German Lemberger are some of my favourite reds, but I can't imagine any other white variety being better than a German Riesling
Silvaner for sure. I get the impression that more and more wines from Franken are not bottled in the classic Bocksbeutel - is that true? As classic as it may be, it is also a very inconvenient bottle shape so I don't mind Franken wine in standard bottles.
13 wine areas in Germany and twice Franconia. Like always most people don't see it. :-) I do sit back and enjoy it, there is so much more (then) Silvaner out there.

Dear KB, I've got a stash of BW Pechstein (various vintages 2011, 2012 and 2013). Apart from fish, what foods would you serve it with? Any tips gratefully received.
Asparagus and lighter veggie and pasta dishes pair great with Weißburgunder! With 10+ year old ones you could probably go for slightly heavier dishes, poultry with a creamy sauce or with chanterelles, even a homemade Flammkuchen or Quiche should be a nice pairing :)

Judging on my potential, personal, excitement alone (knowing it’s a bit apples/oranges), if you put GG Riesling and GC White Burgundy in front of my, 9 out of 10 the GG Riesling is going to get me more excited. Riesling is just always going to interest me more than chardonnay.
My question for you, broadly speaking, how would you compare German lemberger and burgunland blaufankish, of similar quality, stylistically??

I tasted (actually due to your review, I brought that wine to celebrate my 40th birthday) 2021 Rainer Sauer AM LUMPEN 1655 together with my wine dealer (who previously had worked with Rainer Sauer). All I can say we were more than disappointed by this wine. It has a massive stint to it due to the post fermentation acid removal. We for us decided this is all but a GG, to make up for it, I brought the equivalent from Horst Sauer next time, which was a totally different class of wine. We might have been unlucky with the bottle, but I highly doubt we were that unlucky, please consider re-evaluating this wine in comparison (I think it is always a nice play to compare two wine makers basically doing the "same" in the same price range, with pretty much the same circumstances around it (and even better: both having almost the same name)
Can you please taste some Bulgarian wines? We produce a lot of wine here and I would love to hear your opinion of it. You can get some pretty good wines here for very cheap.

The Henkenberg GB is not available for 30 US$, the correct price is approx. 50 US$
Salwey's wines are incredible, my favorite of his wines was also the Kirchberg Weissburgunder, it just needs a bit of time to show how great it is.
Konrad is also a really cool guy. Had the pleasure of sitting down with him during lunch at his winery, and he even tasted some tank samples together with me. He's very happy with the 2022 vintage!
A producer which I'm not sure is on your radar is Krebs in Freinsheim. Their wines are true bargains (in Germany at least), and both their Pinots and Rieslings can age for quite some time!
I have been trying to find better QPR German wines here in Taiwan, but most of the German wine here is either mass produced wine from big producers, such as Peter Mertes or others like them and the other side of the coin are the top wineries/Weinguts that are already expensive in Germany. Only here they are two to three times more expensive due to shipping, taxes and markup.
t is becoming possible to find reasonably priced, decent quality Germany wines now, but you have to really seek them out. I will keep on the lookout for Weingut Krems, it sounds like a great winery. Thanks for sharing it. I would love to try a German Shiraz if I could.

Sorry but making a cocktail with Scotch is like mixing one of these wines with lemonade.
In the 80s I drank some good muller-thurgau kabinett from schloss boekelheim. Surely there are still some excellent Muller -thurgaus to be discovered or has snobbery won the day. Your wizard of aus.

Today i have some good tasting fish here and i decided buy some white wine from Germany. And i bought Latinium gewurztraminer 2020. Price here around 7 dollars. Wine is ok about this price. But for me is not looks like gewurztaminer. Just some fine white wine with good mineralized taste. No frowers notes in taste. For my fish it is maybe even better this kind of mineral taste. Not bad wine but not for everyday and every dish. Sugar here is around 3% and does not feels like gewurztraminer for me. I rate this wine like a good wine for today.
Silvaner can be excellent if the producer and vintage are exceptional.
One of my absolute favourite German wines is the Kesselring Bio Frühburgunder.

It strange that Pinot Gris is not valued in Germany. I have found many delicious Pinot Gris from Alsace and I would imagine you can produce very similar excellent wines in Germany.
Not totally true. I have found Grauburgunder on the Mosel quite often when I have stayed there. I just don't think they produce enough to sell much away from the area? Certainly more popular than something like Huxelrebe today?
I wish it were easier to find German wines outside of Europe. We get the big rieslings, but it’s even rare to find a German Pinot noir in Canada.
In fairness, it's not super easy to get German wines in European countries bordering Germany. The Germans like to drink most of their wines!
