I play bongos and I can see why the comments are a bit negative.ITs good to listen to this piece without watching. A lot of cuban and latin players are very predictable,same licks slaps etc, This is not at all predictable and on listening to the piece a few times without watching it does make sense..It has colour and pace. To many people make adverse comments without thinking or studying the music.
we studied this piece in a 20th and 21st century theory seminar and it really is a cool piece. the intricacies of how many different ways that one can strike the bongos to achieve different timbres is astounding. if you notice, the first couple seconds when he's playing, the piece has the player show each individual way the bongos shall be struck throughout the piece. also, to those saying that he is not a good musician basing off of poor technique, the composer states in the description that there are many unorthodox methods of playing the instrument that are going on here, and finding different ways to play an instrument that is outside the societal norm can be quite exciting in and of itself.
I realized what this was, I accidentally read the composition as being by Roberto Roena and was amazed that Roena would have written this. Of course its not, its by Sierra. Anyways I like it. People who don't like it are mistaken by the performer lacking technique. This is not correct. The performer is reading a complex chart with much annotation indicating what technique he should use. I play percussion and read, this would be hard to play. Though its not Latin music its modern music. An ode, to Latin music, with wit and humour. No es salsa compa, es musica del 20 silglo.
Manny of watchers are expecting to have a rhythm like salsa o bachata on this percussion, but we all got to know that this instrument was born far in the past before these rhythms were born. So on this performance even though is not what most expect is a neat job executed by a professional.Possibly you will hear this song in the background of film like Agent 007. Do not be rude.
Big Love from start to finish. Dedication, intelligence, humour, rhythm, originality, musicality ad infinitum.... this is diametrically opposed to what the current crop of popular musicians produce, mumble mouth, trap hi hat, botox horror show, fake ass, fake hair, fake trajectory, lost souled, reality TV, ad nauseam....
Guys, someone wrote this and he's only performing it. Everyone should stop hating this man for performing someone else's music. This isn't an improvised solo.
He should know better in choosing a piece that totally disrespects the instrument, the tradition, the technique etc...both composer and performer did so bad on this joke of music.
4:00 the ending ! Oh my shit ! 😂 That's the single greatest thing I've ever seen. Call Karl Perazzo and Giovanni Hidalgo and show that to them.

Oh my god. These comments are so..... I respect opinions of people that doenst know anything about music. But not liking is different than saying this is shit. He's a wonderful musician;
Bongos are probably the most personal instrument of all. The Piece he played showed a variety of techniques within a theme. There was a little of everything from rhythm to talking. I hear the point of his chants but that type of voice drum combination has no appeal for me. The stick rhythm at the end was interesting.
OK, I play drums. I am 50 years old so have played for quite some time. I am no virtuoso by any means but I have fun and hold my own for what I do. Now that I have that out of the way, does anyone besides me find the very act of an extended bongo solo to be,... (how do I put this politely?) less than desirable? The guy is good. Very good. Watching him made me want to improve my abilities and yet somehow, it also made me embarrassed to ever consider playing any form of hand drum. Just my personal opinion.
No yeah, he was like a discount leonardo dicaprio character and the way he played seamed more like improvisation rather than a performance. This guy doesn't deserve an oscar and probably would have still gotten one before DiCaprio (If he hadn't gotten one for The Revenant)
He is more of a drummer instead of a bongo player. To know how good a bongo player is he needs to have music in the background. So the audience can feel that beautiful feeling that Bongos really can put out, so they can dance to the beat. And he also needs to know how to put his rhythm to the Beat of the Music. And Two Become one with the music that he is playing to. It's not hard to make up your own beat, but the real test comes when you can play along with any type of music. That's when you are a professional percussionist.
+MegaMalo I'm currently teaching my 11 yr old to play & he could smoke this dude lmao ! I was just telling him "ok this isn't the best of examples" as i laugh, then see your comment... Funny Stuff

Anyone could make up a good beat if you're musically inclined. He needs to show how good he can play with music.
smackin the bootie like 1:29
When the beat goes fast, someone named Luis is gonna tell you a story like "Yo, I heard from my cuz Ernesto while we we're at the museum 2 days ago."
