    After swearing off any new gear this year, I purchased a guitar, an amplifier, and 4 pedals. A a Rivolta Regata 7, a Mesa Rect-O-Verb, a Keeley Zoma, a Lollar Fuzz, Chase Bliss Automatone, and a Mythos 1N34A Mjorlnir. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier about it. I sold my Analogman King of Tone and Boss CE-2.

    I agree with Rhett on his point about Modelers and how less is more when it comes to them. I've never been interested in the big units with tons of menus and screens and such. I run a DSM Humboldt Simplifier X (and also have a UA Dream 65 that I used before it) and I love it. Sits up at the top corner of my pedal board not much bigger than another pedal, set and forget like an amp, and I can either run it direct with the xlr out or into my seymour duncan powerstage and a 2x12 cab

    • @JeremyAndersonBoise
      @JeremyAndersonBoise 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I can’t imagine wanting something more complex than an HX Stomp, honestly. I am probably headed for something more minimal like that UA Dream 65 or similar Fender-style amp in a box.

    my gripe with the mini modlers is that you have to control em with an app.
    ??..
    that app is turning you into a product for the modeler manufacturer.
    and once the app goes EOL the hardware support follows.
    meaning there designed to be disposable.

    My station wagon digital is the Boss IR-2, the only pedal I bought this year. Perfect for silent practice and travel (USB in for backing tracks, headphone out). I use it for my band as my harmonica "amp", but always available if I have to go direct with guitar.

    • @ththejackjumper

      Did you replace the built in IRs? That made such a huge difference for me.

    • @bymbie
      @bymbie 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ththejackjumper I was thinking about it, but I use Linux, so it's a pain to get it done. I also finds the IR landscape overwhelming. I like simple, my main amp is a Dr Z. GH with 3 knobs. What pack did you end-up using? I might need to experiment.

    • @ththejackjumper
      @ththejackjumper 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bymbie I started with the one dollar York Mesa 2x12 Cabinet IR. It made a really big difference. I also picked up a Marshall pack, but just threw some in without too much experimentation. They all really improved the sound significantly. Try the Mesa pack, it's only a dollar. As far as Linux, yeah, that could make it more difficult, you need to use their application. If you know someone with Windows, have them load it and just do it there. You need to make sure the pedal is powered, so bring something to plug into power and the input jack as well as USB. It does make a big difference though.

    • @bymbie

    The only reason why I got an HX Stomp XL was because I wanted something to play in approximation to my exact rig, and maybe to be creatively goofy, but first and foremost quietly. I'm not doing anything else with it, I want to play guitar after a long day of work and I can't plug in when everyone is trying to sleep. Sometimes the acoustic guitar just isn't enough.
    I recently discovered that it's the perfect tool to track ideas with and never worry about resetting levels of things, so that's really fun too.

    Almost kept the buying in check this year until a 3 custom bucker figured Koa SG Supreme hit the Gibson Mod Shop, double the amount I've ever spent on a guitar. Beyond that, picked up a half price Contemporary Strat Special just before Xmas to monkey around with, a Warm Audio Mutation Phaser II around Black Friday, 3 Warmoth replacement necks for future projects with exotic shaft woods (Canary, Rosewood, Wenge) on a great sale, and some random parts and a case for my Schecter Exoiic Super Shredder (that guitar was an Xmas time purchase in 2023).

    The conversation about modelers really got me thinking: Do I actually use everything my Helix offers? No, I don’t. I usually stick to just three or four presets and their snapshots. Now, I’m considering distilling everything I’ve learned into a single rig.
    I’ve decided that the V4 amp by Victory, paired with a couple of pedals, is all I need. With the Two Notes built-in, I can send the V4’s output to both a cabinet and the front of house.

    Offered in the spirit of saving you time & headache, your jazzmaster bridge should probably be a bit higher (to improve break angle), which may also necessitate a neck shim to get the action low again. Just one of the setup quirks that comes with fender offsets, but so worth it when you get it feeling right!

  • @MichaelMYouTube

    Ok, here is my take on the purchase of a modeler by someone who does not need it. You are 100% correct, I didn't need it. When I played in a band I used a 60w Fender Head and some pedals and that was all I need. BUT, I am a guitar nerd and I watch TH-cam channels like this regularly . . . and so it makes me curious about different amps and pedals. SO, I never dreamed I wanted a modeler but when I could get a HX Stomp used for $300-$400 . . . I got it even though I don't need it as the idea was to experiment with a modeler vs actual amps that I would never use. So Rhett is right . . . but that doesn't mean that it isn't a good purchase if $400 or cheaper.

    Jazz Master bridges were designed for heavy flat wounds, they function fine enough if you set em up like an archtop, which was the point. More of a marketing flaw than a design one.

  • @analogsound1
    @analogsound1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The Music City bridge unfortunately doesn’t work for guitars with parallel studs like an SG Junior. I put a Savvy on mine and the intonation was unusably flat on the high strings even with the bridge fully forward and resting against the treble side stud.
    I wish someone would make a solid wraptail bridge with correct intonation for parallel studs but it doesn’t seem to exist. A lightning bar bridge will intonate correctly but they have a massive 1/4” rise on the bass side so you have to adjust your studs to uneven heights to compensate and then the bridge sits at a really weird angle in relation to the top of the guitar.
    I ended up with a Faber Wraptonate on my SG Junior after trying 4 or 5 different bridges. It can intonate perfectly since it’s fully adjustable, it actually looks good on the guitar (better than the Schaller Signum imo, which looked a little “orthopedic” by comparison with its ultra long saddle adjustment range), and surprisingly it sounds at least as good as the Music City and other solid bridges I tried.

    I think the appeal of a full functioned modeler is that it generally is the cost of ONE really nice tube amp. I just bought one, solely for studio use, because I was going to get another amp and it was going to be more expensive and well.. as someone who is just recording music for themselves by themselves... I am not that great at recording real amps and then mix them and all of that.. should I learn how to do that better? Probably but... I would rather just write more music than learn how to record and mix properly at this time (thats not quite true but I just don't have the time to learn, I would like to but time is limited)

    Crazy how many effect pedals there are. Most of them take away more than they give.
    You can sand/file down the switch on your Jazzmaster so it's almost flush with the pickguard. Still usable and looks right but you won't accidently hit while playing. Beyond me why no one makes low profile switches. I used a needle file to put ridges back on the switch because I'm ocd. Top tier Mexican made Fenders are not the ugly stepchild. Look at early pictures of the Fender factory and see who was making those guitars.

    The nano cortex. I had the same confusion to the hate reaction as Rhett, but being pretty stepped in. QC world figured out quickly the root of it.
    When you really sum up the complaints, the bulk of them boil down to people having complaints on what they wanted off thought it should be rather than what it actually is.

  • @stoneysdead689
    @stoneysdead689 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    They shat upon it, Rhett, because it was not at all what they had been promised- a smaller, more affordable quad cortex. Not everyone has 2-3 rare and expensive tube amps at home to capture, along with cabs and fx- they wanted the modeling side of the QC. They expected fewer amps, less fx, less cabs- and what they got instead was a capture device that only does you any good if you have something to capture. Most of these ppl, if they had a nice tube amp to capture- wouldn't want the QC at all- they'd just play their nice amp and be happy. But they don't have that kind of money and/or they live somewhere they can't crank it and make it do its thing anyway- so they were looking for a smaller, more affordable modeler, not profiler, of the same quality as the QC, with just less options.

True, I don't play 500 amps, I tend to stick to one or two, but I had thounsands to choose from and had gone through dosens if not hundreds before I landed on my favourite. However, I'm a producer and access to loads of different sounds is very useful. Sometimes I play bass through my rig, or synths. Then the hundreds of amps open so many possibilities. So perhaps it's true that I don't NEED it, but it sure is handy on occasion.

    But, you don't NEED the Two Rock... It's like the suburban office guy who has the big F150...

    Crazy Gibson are not putting out more white Explorers. There is a black one in a local store that is cool, but it's not white. Come on Gibson, you can do it!

    The diffie between the nano cortex and the tonex, amongst others is the sampling frequency. The nano simply is not as high quality as an audio interface as the tonex, and it costs more. I don't expect my marshall tsl602 or my winter coat to be any kind of an audio interface, but the nano is not really an amp it's a digital amp sim, so it's slightly disappointing at it's pricepoint.
