@@Apocalypse4162 Great albums, all of them. Village Green sold precious few copies when released in late 1968 but has since become a classic and a favourite among both critics, fans and music lovers in general. Not the same with Something Else from 1967. One of their finest 60s albums with classics like Death Of A Clown and Afternoon Tea. It deserves the same reappraisal as Village Green. Muswell Hillbillies from 1971 was their first RCA album and is my all time favourite Kinks album. Lyrically tragicomical and musically diverse with elements of American country and blues. It was NOT what RCA was expecting as a first album. They wanted a hook laden commercial pop album. Instead they got a marvellous densely packed album of music hall type songs delivered with humor and pastiche. Such a great album and such a shame so few people have even bothered to check it out.

@@comic4relief That may be. Just of selected few of MY record collecting friends are even aware of that album. As far as the average music fan is concerned, an album with no hits are probably not worth even hearing, let alone buying. It's strange how people's mind work. 20th Century Man was the single off Muswell Hillbillies and didn't exactly set the charts on fire but then again, The Kinks was a far weightier musical concern than to worry about scoring hit singles. Sure, Pye Records put their promotional capacities on singles and paid little mind to actual albums. Ray Davies always took such great care in making every Kinks album a cohesive whole. A master of commercial hit singles too but he's addressed his disappointment in Pye over and over again. Having said that, he's also thankful towards Pye Records and has even said Pye was probably the best record label to be a part of. A complex, convoluted relationship for sure and RCA naturally enough expected The Kinks debut studio album for them to be a nice collection of radio ready pop songs. What they got, was something far better. A masterpiece of Ray Davies tragicomical songs. Almost jug band, old fashioned Jazzy ragtime blues, yet with oh-so English lyrics. It's probably my favourite Kinks album. Lord, I've laughed and I've cried listening to a most marvellous album, often doing my laughing and crying simultaneously!
I've never seen The Kinks. I have seen Ray through the years. I thought he was awesome. He performed the hits of The Kinks. I have always hoped to see Dave and Ray on the same stage once again. I love The Kinks and have always thought they were one of the most underrated bands from the British invasion. They didn't want to be like everybody else.
@Jim McCracken Yes ! Of all their great songs, Tired of Waiting for You was their biggest hit in the US, reaching #6 on the Billboard chart. In 1982 they tied that spot with Come Dancing. As a fan, all their songs were number one to me
@Jim McCracken they got into a situation in the states just as their records were hitting and were unable to tour at the time when they should have been at their peak. Their influence on American bands is definitely huge though.
@Jim McCracken Ah ok. I knew something unfortunate happened that kept them from touring at a crucial point in their career , but wasn't clear on exactly what it was. They were a great band . Always did dig the Kinks
@Jim McCracken Wow that's an unusual bill ! Johhny Cougar is a name I have not heard in a long time. He sure has came a long way since the days of being billed as Johnny Cougar.
I had a later Greatest Hits of theirs with Ray singing the original words of Lola (‘Coca Cola’ not ‘cherry cola’). Naturally I sold it for next to nothing... 🙁🙄🤨🤮
Reminds me of Dave's brilliance. Just read Ray's biography, and he always appreciated Dave's power as a player. Great to see Dave is still making beautiful music with his son.
Don't know how a friend of mine ever booked the kinks for river days Kaukauna Wisconsin in 92 there was maybe 1500 people and what an amazing performance it was their Hatred tour
There might be a lot more fans than you think. They are just not all concentrated demographically, but spread, albeit thinly, throughout the world. Hang what critics say!
They have hillbillies in England 🇬🇧? Are there rowdy brawls in their pubs, breaking bottles over people's heads and the 600 year old church down the street tolls it's bell ...then they stop abruptly " Oh, dear...time for tea 🍵 " ?...something like that?
Perhaps not exactly hillbillies, but there are definitely epic rows. They don't call em English bulldogs for nothing! The "Muswell Hillblies" thing comes from the fact that The Kinks came from Muswell Hill - a suburban area of North London. You learned to protect yourself on the streets there.
Maybe it was a little jab from Ray, considering that song was a hit for Dave. A lil sibling rivalry. Dave's few hits compared to Ray's entire Kinks catalog 🤷♂️
The Kinks first RCA album Muswell Hillbillies is their underrated masterpiece.
Love it. Released the week I was born in 71. Stone cold classic
It's my absolute favorite but its a close race against Village Green and Something Else.

Best band ever.
here here
Ray is so frickin funny along with his musical talent. Somewhere on TH-cam there are the green screen takes for this show that are hilarious.
How wonderful that Beat-Club kept these recordings of great bands of the era.
Ray Davies was born to be a star.
you mean SIR Ray Davies ;)
Maybe. However, it didn't take too long till he quit willing so -fortunately.
Fucking genius

the first lp in my collection was the kink's greatest hits in 1965. i still have it.
1965 - 'Greatest Hits' that's a bit 😉 ... early in their career. As always the Kinks once again faster.
Still have that LP myself! Of course I have every one sold as a rabid fan since the early days.

Wow. How incredibly great is this?
My favorite band 😎. Bar none. 🎯 I saw them four times In koncert🤗🌹🎼. 1974,79,80and 1989
Muswell Hillbillies is my favorite Kinks album but its not an easy choice that's for sure.
Mine too, along with Village Green. It's a very different Kinks album, the songwriting is superb!
Reminds me of Dave's brilliance. Just read Ray's biography, and he always appreciated Dave's power as a player. Great to see Dave is still making beautiful music with his son.
I have some of their albums, on vinyl, from 80s , best music they made. each song a great story.
Don't know how a friend of mine ever booked the kinks for river days Kaukauna Wisconsin in 92 there was maybe 1500 people and what an amazing performance it was their Hatred tour
Domt be fooled by this performqncd, these guys had quite a reputation for drinking hard and the shows got pretty wild I hear.
Música perfeita pra bater o pé no chão,bem estilo country, mas claro com o estilo dos kinks
Ray Davies: 'The man in Red'...........
My name is Johnny Cash 🤣🤣🤣LOL
Brilliant 🙂
Super Cool ! Thanks.
VERY GOOD.................................
Viva os kinks que estão sempre alegrando a minha vida,e fazendo eu viver uma vida que nem vivi, mas que me sinto mais confortável ouvindo agora
This, and Death of a clown, hits hard..
Just Incredible From México

Awesome ! Whats it called ?
Johnny Cash Davies!! Maybe Johnny has walked the Black Hills with him, that would be😎😎

I wonder if Ray ever introduced Mick Avory as "the former Rolling Stone."
Dave "Death of a Clown" Davies

I know who Dave is without the Death of a Clown title.. Mmmm.
Maybe it was a little jab from Ray, considering that song was a hit for Dave. A lil sibling rivalry. Dave's few hits compared to Ray's entire Kinks catalog 🤷♂️
Everyone knows Lola and You Really Got Me. But like the Beatles, some of the Kinks best songs were not the hit singles:
Flackenko's old stompin grounds.
And my names,..Johnny Cash,,..
Must do something with that hear. Haaa
Ray wrote a song about that, "Permanent Waves" and it's funny.
This isn't Johnny Cash!!! It's Ray freaking Davies Goddammit!
Why fucking cuss about it? Shit! It was a damn joke! What the he'll?
I like the Kinks, but why on earth does Ray have to speak in an American accent?
Emulating Johnny Cash for this..
It was part of his shtick in the early 70s. If you go back and search out some live recordings from their RCA era you'll find he did it quite a lot
It’s a USA 🇺🇸 hillbilly song so why not 🤷♂️
Ray Davies can do whatever he likes 👍
Who was the babe?

What posessed Dave to grow that awful beard? It ruins his looks. Mick is as gorgeous as ever though!
