    As someone who used the Mosca as the first engine after Betsy:
    The Mosca handles up to 22 mph, but that doesn't mean that it stops accelerating at 22 mph.. It can literally go and go until it yeets itself from perfectly straight track.

      I was going to say, Mosca can do 22mph and then Mosca gives very few Central Rio & Pacifics about what happens afterwards. I'm not sure if the Mosca better belongs on the C.R.&.P. or the E.S.&.D. because she pretty much is par for the course for both.

    Locomotive number 8, named Crazy 8, pulling 8 cars... immediately lives up to its name! 🤣
    And speaking of locomotive design being "let's try this and see what happens!", there are some truly fun ideas that people tried, most of them unsuccessful (thought not all of them just because they were necessarily bad ideas). Things like steam locomotives in Switzerland powered by electric heaters instead of burning coal. Locomotives in britain that could run on diesel or steam power or both, steam engines using incredibly high-pressure boilers (kaboom!), steam locomotives with the cab at the front or with the cab in the middle, steam turbine locomotives (whooshing noises), steam monorails (nani!?)... and even beyond steam power, you had crazy stuff like propeller-powered locomotives and jet-powered locomotives!

    The rocket equation is BRUTAL. More payload needs more thrust, needs more fuel, is more weight, needs more thrust...
    Iterate that a few times, and now you need thicker walls and engines to carry the fuel too...

      Yeah, but remember every time when either Hyce or Kan tries recording a vid for RO they need a good amount of storage space and stories to tell too, and plus just for bringing us loads of entertainment, from both ends of the stick, "Hint, hint," from Hyce & Kan's Sides recordings through the Stream of totally PAWsomeness Railroading expertise and advice on NOT to screw up in the real world of handling delicate relics; such as a 2.4.0 Miwache or a 4.4.0 Mogul, or go even bigger like the NYC 2.8.2 Dreyfus one of many famous Streamlined Steamies during the great Depression, and the middle of the 2nd World War, as with so many more like U.P C.R.G And Santa Fe Amtrak and so many more Railroad companies that had to deal with the toughest of times back in the 1980s and early 50s and so early on, but we need to also remember that the past always matters, for our ancestors, the ones who lived before us; well most of them probably didn't make it to see their golden years, but most likely some their future generations are still probably living the legacy of the once proud and important people that used to work endlessly on some of the most popular and dangerous corners of America and the other Countries.
      So you guys better be thankful for your ancestors for giving you the life you have today, and use it very wisely; bc "A Human's Spark, one life that's all they've got..!" So keep praying to your Heavenly Father for the Life that He has Given You.
      Working on the railroad can be a very disastrous and life threatening job and place, but unlike a video game, you can do pretty much whatever you want, with no limits, but there has to be safely measurements, you do have to apply by the Game Rules, or it's "Game Over!".
      I know people don't like the in-app purchases, but hey whatcha gonna do about it? Just ignore those kinds of things, and go for the free ones: bc going free is better than being paid to do something that you don't want to do.

    My suggestion for the switchbacks would be ramp them to 6%. To 30m of 1% 20m of 2% 20m of 3% 10m of 4% 10m of 5% and the last 10m at 6% for a total of an additional 100m ramping up to 6%. This would be added on to what you already have. This way you have more stopping power, you could let the train go a bit faster, and you could have a little more reliability on having the train roll back to the switch.
    I was joking on Hyce's video that this particular one should have been titled, "Sir, where is my train?" doing a parody of "Dude, where's my car?" That's pretty much how this episode went, but I guess it might be, "Say there fella, where is my train, see!? M-yes!" all Vaudeville and what not. But if you REALLY want a Kenosha smelling 13, get the Cooke 2-6-0. That thing is stupidly top heavy to the point where it will just roll over like a rhino going around a curve less than 120 m in radius and going over 10 mph (or at least that's what it seems like.) If you want a reliable engine, get the 2-8-0. If you want a Kenosha train, get the 2-6-0.
    I guess to simplify Hyce's explanation about Mosca's name; Mosca is to that specific train as Titanic is to a specific iceberg hugging oceanliner. Technically the Titanic was not a "Titanic" ship but a Olympic-Class Oceanliner christened with the name Titanic. The Mosca is the same thing. That engine is not a "Mosca Steam Locomotive" but is a Baldwin 2-8-0 model something or another (I don't know the specific catalogue number either) christened with the name Mosca. But in the game, they've used the names some of the trains that are endearing to them and others they've used the manufacture, common colloquial name, or a model/style name for them. Like Shay is a series of geared locomotives and the one currently in game isn't THE Shay or isn't the only model of Shay. But because Hyce started this, he has seen the Glenbrook, Eureka, Betsy, Montezuma, and he knows about the Mosca; so instead of "Train manufacturer, model name, number" he's gone with using those specific engines, or at least close enough replicas.

    Steel Dynamics is one of the major rail suppliers in the US, their plant in Columbia City, Indiana has a cooling deck/building for rail that is around 1700' long. Edit: I want to add that the building was built over the rail cooling area to keep wildlife from being cooked as they cool "the area has over 100 lakes" and it took a few years of complaints about wildlife loss before they finally installed it, they literally roll out of the main building glowing red!

    The thing with aviation fuel is, the 1 kg of fuel you need for the last mile of flying has to be carried every thousand km before. Thats why you have such precise calculations to make when flying, including the needed fuel, fuel to reach a deveation airport, some buffer, some safety margin, etc. And that also is what makes it more expensive to fly. The more fuel you carry, the more safety margin you have, but the more the whole flight will cost because of the weight.
    Also with the consumption, thats why you count the aviation consumption as kg/mile/person.

    Takeoff vs landing weight is a huge problem for electric aircraft. It's literally been what's been holding them back, and the problem is only being solved now battery densities are going up. Normally, if a plane needs to land shortly after take-off, it'll need to dump most of the fuel to land, otherwise it just can't land.

    the East Broad top railroad has 6 locomotives, most of them are 2-8-2. specifically they are Mikado's. the Mosca's seem to be either gone or they are show pieces that no longer get used. the last time that a steam engine was used at the EBT was 2011 and that was #15

    I can't believe the lies that Hyce is spreading. Mosca's wheels are painted red so that they spin faster, obviously.
    Also, the procedure that I would recommend for going down the 10%: Get yourself stationary on the crest, tie all the car brakes (but not the loco), use your helper to push the whole consist onto the 10%, then start loosening brakes from the back until the train starts moving, then get into the loco and add brakes as needed.

    The rocket equation is interesting as it does strictly apply to every form of transit - imagine trying to take a steam train around the world, and transport all the fuel and water you're going to need, the majority of your power goes into pulling the water you need for pulling all the water.
    It's also interesting to note that rockets only throttle down for the atmosphere, and actually throttle back up later in flight. This is because the faster they ascend, the less time they spend fighting gravity - if they went super super slow, all their energy would be lost fighting gravity.
    Also, no real life rocket pumps fuel between the tanks, the extra complexity isn't worth it. The falcon heavy just runs the central core at lower power.

    Hey kan, i have a question for hyce. It's been bugging me for a while but is there a reason we rarely (if ever) see electronically operated valve gear given te advantages of control of steam and cost

    Cool thing is the bigger the diesel engine. The more efficient it is, to a point.

    The reason trains of couplers is so the cars don't go flying down the mountains and hills and I thought KAN knew better than to not leave the cars uncoupled from the locomotive.

    Kan, barges on waterways can rival freight trains in terms of tonnage of cargo per gallon of fuel.

    • @kimpatz2189
      @kimpatz2189 ปีที่แล้ว

      An iddy bitty tiny engine on a barge that weighs as much as 5-8 railway car loads is the epitome of fuel usage per weight, but the time it would take to move that weight is so long that it would be impractical in a time sensitive load.
      The most efficient modes of transport are:
      1. Pipeline. Nothing can beat it on liquid transport.
      2. Ships. As big of a ship as possible without weight constraints.
      3. Trains on rails. The least amount of friction is their strong card.

    • @supersmashbghemming6445
      @supersmashbghemming6445 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. The issue is that we don't get to pick where waterways are (at least for cheap)
