    It's pretty interesting watching "Squid on Strike" and "Jellyfish Hunter" as an adult, especially now.
    As a kid I didn't understand what a strike was or how brutally Mr.Krabs was exploiting SpongeBob and Squidward's labor, I alway thought that he was joking for some reason.
    I feel like these episodes have aged even better with the increasing number of Unions and Strikes that have occurred in the past 20 years, It's really interesting to look back on.

    I think the Texan pride thing comes from our history classes, learning that Texas colonists managed to fight off another nation’s army (with help of course) and then was its own country for about 10 years before begging the United States to please take them in. A lot of states don’t have a history that is that action packed. It’s almost like a mini American revolution, and everyone knows how patriotic we can be about the US because of that

    • @maxdrags3115
      @maxdrags3115 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Plus, Texas is basically its own country and is one of the most powerful states.

    It's hard to say when SpongeBob became "bad." The fact is that Stephen Hillenburg and several prolific writers left the series after Season 3 and the movie. Season 4 has a younger staff that tried to pick up where the old guard left off, but after a while they start doing their own thing. The part nobody can agree on is when "their own thing" became a problem.

  • @reelsmug
    @reelsmug ปีที่แล้ว +77

    29:15 Here's the thing. I'm one of the people who watched Spongebob way after it got bad due to hoping it would get good again. So I feel confident in saying this. Season 4 is not bad. It's just that the general quality of episodes and characterization gets a noticeably lower average in that season. There are a few episodes that are pre-movie quality. But not that much.
    Season 5, the quality gets even lower, but not by much so there are a few episodes that are still perfectly serviceable but only like 1 or 2 could reach pre-movie quality in writing.
    Season 6 literally starts with a mediocre episode with a horrible infamous scene and things continue being incredibly mediocre going forward. The "good" episodes are just the level of decent episodes of season 5...with one exception gets to what I believe to be a good Season 4 level. (And even that episode has a horribly gross scene in there to prevent it from being perfectly fine). The thing with Spongebob that kept people watching way after is that decent and even bad episodes could have one or two scenes where things are really funny or memeable, but the actual episode itself is not at that level.

    • @masalanicholoff3593
      @masalanicholoff3593 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think Season 5 is also where the Squidward episodes stop being him getting his comeuppance or self-sabotaging and start with the show torturing him for no reason, which is a reason a lot of people don’t like the Post-Movie Era. I also watched a decent amount of 5 and 6 hoping things would get better, and it really feels like executive meddling with the way they overuse gross images and flanderized pretty much everyone.

    As a child, it never clicked to me that the whole episode of Sandy, SpongeBob and the Worm was a short homage to Stephen Spielberg’s 1978 classic JAWS. Everything from someone clawing on a surface to break up the commotion in a bickering room, to the town “hiring” someone to hunt the beast, to the fake out of someone capturing what they think is the actual beast, but it really wasn’t. The reason why people say it gets bad after season 3 is because that is when Stephen Hillenburg left the show. He originally wanted the movie to be the end of the show (the movie was released after season 3) but Nickelodeon decided to continue it. Personally, I continued watching until right around season 6, and there really is a noticeable dip in quality starting in season 4. That's just my opinion though.

    Episode 19 is so nostaligic for me because I remember every single year from 2006 to around 2012 me and my siblings would sit at the kids table for thanksgiving at my grandmothers house and the only "kids" dvd she had was that one episode that she recorded for us and we would watch it every single year. i have no idea where that tape is now.

    There definetly is a quality drop after the movie because that was supposed to be the finale. The creator Steven Hillenburg and other writers left the show. I like most of the season 4 episodes, some are great, some just okay and most pretty good. The following seasons have their moments and some episodes I like but the style has changed. The humor now is mostly grotesque visiual humor, slapstick, and just your kid show basic jokes. And I even grew up with many of these episodes at least until season 6. It really isn't (only) nostalgia, but you'll probably see.
    You should watch it as long as you want. It will be interesting to see your opinions on the post movie episodes. I think you should decide for yourselves if you like them or not.

    One thing I love about Mr. Krabs as a character is how he can naturally fill pretty much any role the show needs him to from episode to episode. Sometimes he’s a completely villainous dirtbag and sometimes he’s a nurturing voice of reason, often somewhere in between.

    11:24 if you think about it the fact of Patrick getting mad about his name being changed to Rick actually makes more sense than you think. Because in big pink loser that scene of is this the crusty crab and Patrick kept saying no this is Patrick until he got mad and blew it

    21:28 I recently found out what she meant by "I'm from Texas; what you think is big I think is big are two different bigs didn't mean "I'm tough you being a sea creature and me being a land creature have different POVs of the word big" but was a hint of the famous quote "everything's bigger in Texas" I should know I visited Texas last November some things there were a lot bigger than in my home state NY like 3 Liter soda bottles for starters

    I kept watching SpongeBob well after season 4 as a kid, there’s one channel that is still reacting past that season and I’ve been shocked seeing just how many episodes I forgot about but now remember bits and pieces of after seeing the thumbnails. I remember still watching it as a kid but at a certain point started feeling like the episodes were getting really strange and genuinely made me uncomfortable to watch, but that didn’t start happening until about season 6 or so. I group season 4 in with the first three because there are some episodes on there I remember fondly that really aren’t as bad as people say, and I remember specific episodes from later seasons that I liked but they weren’t as good/memorable as the first 4 seasons. It’s all up to personal opinion though, some people absolutely hate later SpongeBob episodes while some really like them still. I think there are some really good moments in later seasons but they’re just more rare to come by than in the earlier ones.

    “Mr. Krabs is a villain!”
    “Jellyfish Hunter” is a prime example of the level of Mr. Krabs’ selfish greed, but this is sadly only the FIRST major instance. You guys will see a couple more in season 3, but 6 onward, he becomes downright AWFUL. “The Cent of Money” has him abuse Gary as a metal detector behind SpongeBob’s back, in “SpongeBob You’re Fired,” he lets SpongeBob go because he can theoretically save a whole NICKEL, he tries to send Squidward to his death multiple times in “Out of the Picture” to bank off a dead artist’s more valuable work, and…oh boy, “One Coarse Meal” may not be about greed, but it’s still Krabs’ most deplorable actions yet.
    But I’m overall really glad Erik and Boom enjoyed Season 2! This series is truly magical to me.

    Season 4 is definitely a good season for the most part, meanwhile I'd say either season 5 or 6 is where you start to tread into mixed bag territory, and I remember mid 2010s era Spongebob being a bit stale alot of the time. However, from the couple episodes I saw, modern Spongebob (as in the last few years) seems to have a new energy back, imo at least.

    Since you guys have already finished ATLA I can tell you that the scene where Avatar Kyoshi disconnects the Kyoshi peninsula from the mainland and moves it out into the ocean to turn it into an island always reminds me of Patrick's plan here in the Alaskan Bull Worm episode XD
    "Let's just take Bikini Bottom/the Kyoshi Peninsula and PUSH it somewhere else!"
    Poor Alaskan Bull Worm though, I got pushed off a bunk bed onto a pile of toys before, landing on a whole town down in a ravine's gotta hurt like heck...
