Hey Donna ,and Name that Price was brilliant and I will miss it. The talent at G4 was immense sadly the channel lacked any real direction and didn’t grow through normal means. G4 could have been awesome. Toast actually hit the nail on the head if you gave a good creator access to all these thing to come up with a plan it would have been amazing. The video game space is so popular. Unfortunately no one in charge knew what to do.

Depends on how much Comcast Spectacor retains the IP to these shows. I can see these shows continue on their respective Twitch channels, but only if they kept the rights to the shows… I’m sure they could even buy the set pieces for a discount too.

One of the issue with “viewers” for stuff like hey Donna and NYP is that a lot of viewers watch the vods on whatever channel and not live on G4. Which is normal for online content tbh.

Jirard is a great creator of his own right. I loved The Completionist growing up and he's still kicking! Wild to fire a guy as creative and hardworking as him so fast.
I mean they are closing the network, so his job literally doesn't exist. If you read the standard letter they sent every employee, they will give resources or I'm sure in some one like his case get in contact about other opportunities, but his job as it was doesn't exist.

As much as I enjoy his content, let's be frank here. He will be fine. His own channel will go on, and he does do amazing work (with his huge staff that helps him). The other regular people, though, are not going to be so hot when the dust clears.
Being born on November 16th, my only wish was for G4 to come back and to see mogul mail talk about this hurts me deeply. I can’t wait for Ludwig to hear about this he will be equally as distraught as me. :(

It's funny he doesn't mention the biggest reason why G4's public perception was incredibly poor after the tirade Frosk went on. Go woke go broke.
I think he was trying to stick to provable facts. Frosk damaging the brand reputation is more a common sense feeling than a “look at this spreadsheet of the damage she did” thing. However, Frosks rant being the first way that many people learned G4 was relaunched shows deep brand mismanagement and proves the common sense paradigm that alienating vast portions of your potential viewerbase right out of the gate isn’t the smartest business move. “Gamers” will always include a large number of people that don’t like being lectured at. Whether they are “part of the problem” or not is irrelevant. Being a member of an attacked group (“Men”) is just as relevant for market purposes as being the actual target of a weird rant. I’ve certainly never objectified women in games or harassed female gamers, but Frosks rant put me off G4 immediately. It set the tone of what its relationship to its viewers was going to be like and I decided I didn’t like it. So did hundreds of thousands and potentially millions of other people whose first exposure to the relaunched G4 was Frosks (somewhat self-absorbed and jealous sounding) rant.

I used to watch G4, I just had a conversation about it with my father reminiscing about watching the original Ninja Warrior which is a Japanese show which was subbed and not dubbed and was by far much harder than American ninja warrior, I also loved watching attack of the show as well as some game shows like lingo or chain reaction

Sessler and Frosk I believe had extremely little to do with the downfall of G4. Sessler would have been better off continuing his reviews on his own. The problem is that it never really got that far off the ground to begin with. I think Mogul is right, the online gaming media space works great for individuals and small teams. Yet if you toured the G4 office and saw their massive gaming rooms, film studios, and offices, you'd know there is absolutely no way they would be able to break anywhere close to even on the operating costs alone. They were only averaging only 2-4k viewers per stream.

He did die once after fighting the Balrog (and then was sent back by Eru Illuvitar/God as he was the only one of the 5 Istari/Wizards to have actually been trying to do their original job) and then when he sails from the Grey Havens to Valinor, in the films it’s suggested that they’re all sailing to the afterlife/dying, which is in part true. However this is only from the perspective of mortals such as Humans, Dwarves and Hobbits. For the Elves and the Maiar (a group of angelic beings of which Gandalf is one) this is where they originate from (apart from some of the Elves) so Gandalf didn’t actually “die” again, he merely just went home from where he was sent from. Yes Valinor is said to be a “holy land” and where all the Valar and Maiar (Angels) live but it’s not the same as him dying and going to “heaven”, he’s just going back from where he came from if that makes sense? As someone who watched G4 back in the day, and followed G4 since relaunch, I can say I saw it coming. The problem wasn’t the talent, because their productions were great and you can tell a lot of labor and love went into it, but they were spending a gross amount of money too quickly. I think if they started small and scaled up they might’ve had a longer run to be successful, but dumping millions in payroll / overhead put them in this position.
Really sad to watch it end, I enjoyed AOTS, NYP and Hey Donna but that’s just how it goes sometimes
I think the problem was it didn't have a clear role. It was streaming and primetime TV which are two very different beasts.

They either support the message and want to act like it wasn’t the reason for the fail or don’t want to be canceled by calling it out. Either way as much as I love Lud I think it’s pathetic he ignored that Frosk was the main reason the company failed.

What’s funny is that they totally realized their mistake even though they refused to say that publicly. Frosk herself said everyone there became hostile to her shortly after her rant aired. That is, people saw the damage it did, realized she was a toxic asset, and put her at arms length as quickly as possible. The fact that other people involved will likely land other jobs in the industry but Frosk has decided to leave the industry entirely says a lot. She knows she got herself blackballed/blacklisted, quietly but effectively.

Honestly, when I used to watch G4 back on Dish (Satellite TV). Back when I was 10 or 12 I loved to turn on the TV and watch their news segment. Since I was so young, I didn't have a phone yet and didn't know where to get gaming news, and to know what games are coming up and what are getting updates, I thought it was wonderful.

It was destined to fail. When they brought Frost on, it was destined to fail faster.
G4 was such an iconic thing to gamers back in early 2000's. When they brought it back, I thought they had a real chance to be successful.
I thought bringing that cable TV experience to a TH-cam channel could be really good. Costs are lower, it's cheaper to make sketches and special effects, and all that, so they could put even more of their creativity to use, but the meat and potatoes of a successful channel is usually interesting conversations and personalities.
Xplay lends itself to streaming and TH-cam, for example. Name Your Price was cheap to make and sellable to traditional media, etc.
But then I hear they laid off 30 or 40 people??????
Why did they even have 30 to 40 people. These dumb asses threw away everything about TH-cam and Twitch that made a comeback viable, and immediately ran out and hired 100 people and tried to run it exactly the way they did when they got canceled.
It's far worse than that, it's no longer cheaper to make content and put it on TH-cam when some dork decides to rent out an entire office space in Burbank, California for those 40+ people to go to every day. With not a very well structured set of content to release and get traction with. They put the cart before the horse.

Gah, I feel so bad for Will. He was just talking about how he was overextending himself and started to say no to projects/opportunities so he could focus more attention on Name Your Price and Hey Donna, plus his other new personal projects with Twitch. He talked about how much of his heart and all his time is going into those two shows and how much more he wanted to give them. And then boom, right after he says that, NYP & HD are both gone in an instant.

Her rant being peoples first exposure to the idea that G4 was relaunching certainly did a of brand damage and alienated tons of potential viewers right out of the gate. Approving her rant to be aired that early might have been good feminism but it was not good brand management. Nobody likes being lectured to by an unestablished brand or personality that they don’t already identify with.

I believe the death of G4 was because migration of gaming to TH-cam and Twitch and with more people getting streaming services over satellite/cable TV. The only memorable things I remember G4 having in the final years was E3 coverages for that one week of the year plus the Japanese dubs of Ninja Warrior and Unbeatable Banzuke.
The biggest problem G4 had was being funded for network tv. If they had broke free and became their own producing name on twitch, they wouldve done fine. But nobody cares about cable anymore, thats why they failed
You left out the part where right from the start of the revival one of their major stars called the old G4 fanbase misogynists and told them not to watch (and more recently celebrated after her coworkers were laid off), and another one called for the deaths of people who disagree with his politics. I think that may have had a little something to do with it too...

I wrote a comment of my own but yours is getting more traction so I’ll add on here to say that I really think it’s misleading of Lud to completely ignore the fact that Frosk is pretty much the sole reason the company failed. The reason they lost so much money and audience was because of her but he completely ignored that. I love Lud but the fact that he completely glossed over this makes me think he has an ulterior motive to hide those facts.
Maybe Frosk telling the audience not to watch also had something to do with it.
I really don't throw this term around lightly like some do, but they literally "got woke and went broke".
That short haired lady out of pocket going on a sexism rant when people tuned in to hear them talk about video games was an instant red flag. Since their revival, a lot of their game reviews and commentary had political quips that *literally* no audience member asked for, and Adam Sessler (Love him when he strictly sticks to video games) is politically unhinged on twitter.
NOTE - "woke" is not an reference to having a diverse cast like some ignorant f's would make it out to be. I'm simply talking about their political stances they'd insert into every piece of commentary since they revived the channel on TH-cam.

I think Frosk was a big hand in driving their audience away with her meltdown. And seeing Adam Sessler's tweets just showed how much of an evil human being he really is.
I've seen this a lot but I've looked into this claim and it's almost an objectively incorrect analysis. The viewership patterns remained mostly the same after Frosk's rant. Viewership on their channels before was mediocre with a couple videos pulling in a decent amount of views (by channel standards). Their Twitch channel's viewership actually went up from January to April.
People upset about her rant were disproportionately loud because their reason for not enjoying G4 is a moral one but all the data available doesn't really point to her rant having an impact on viewership, especially in the more casual audience. Their numbers don't stand close to those who just weren't interested in tuning into a cable network of Ninja Warrior and Scott the Woz reruns and most of their new content could be consumed on Twitch and their TH-cam channels.
There's a lot of reasons the network failed; having too large of a staff, very expensive studio, failing to appropriately compete when Twitch and TH-cam are giants in the gaming media market, all around mediocre marketing, failing to meet deadlines (the cable network didn't even go live until like 3 months after they planned), and so on. I wouldn't say Frosk's rant even cracks the top 20 reasons the network flopped.

There was a huge failing in gaining a buzz about the network reviving, with the toxic rant being the *first impression* most people got from the new iteration. The rant came near the start of the relaunch and immediately dampened all momentum. I actually kinda agree with your conclusion about it probably being doomed and having numerous issues, but that rant immediately branded the G4 Relaunch in a certain way and certainly impacted growth more than incoming viewership patterns from a *dead network* might suggest.
@@superdestructo I've spent the past 24 hours going through dozens of Discord servers and watching people talk about this. Frosk has been mentioned by a few but the majority of people are saying they either didn't know the channel was revived in the first place or that they weren't really interested in the programming.
A lot of people that were excited for Scott the Woz only disappointed to find out that it was just Scott the Woz episodes from TH-cam mushed into a one hour time slot. Ninja Warrior fans were excited to see them put out new episodes only for it to take them 10 months to actually put them out. The only people who actually knew about Frosk's rant or cared were people that are heavily invested in a lot of culture war nonsense.
I'm not sure what the first point of the first quote was. If this rant was as devastating for the network as I've seen people framing it, they wouldn't have spent the next 3 months having growth in viewership. Like it or not, her rant was something only a niche audience of people actually seemed to care about.

However as the other person in the comments mentioned...it could very well have been a factor in driving people away based on initial impressions. I can't really quantify the exact number that would be put off as there's no data to pull from as far as I'm aware. You won't find me disagreeing with how competitive the market is for video game viewership either. G4 simply didn't have a strong enough comeback.

I used to love G4 as a kid and teenager. It was pre youtube time, and before youtube gaming became big, one of the best ways to see gameplay before buying.

I would watch the Anime Unleashed segment on G4 when I was a kid. I would stay up late and sneak into the living room to watch it. I discovered some really neat sci-fi and horror anime from that segment. They also had some really cool shows showcasing new tech.
I miss it, tbh. It sucks that they didn't last, but with the saturation of gaming news channels and streams, it's hard to keep up and stay ahead of the curve. You need to really have something to lean on other than nostalgia to stick around. I hope that everyone who worked on the channel finds new jobs and are successful. It's really gotta suck to be blindsided like that.
