Quick thing on Unavaatu. He doesn't have all 4 bending styles. Wan and Raava needed to go to all the lion turtles to get each bending style and then store it in Raava. Vaatu hasn't done that, so he doesn't supply bending outside of energy. He does however supply a much bigger power boost since he is full, and Raava has stayed in her tiny form since she's been trapped in avatar bodies. In addition to this, since Korra revived Raava in her whole form, therefore a much bigger power boost.
I don't think Vaatu made Unavaatu huge because he was in his bigger form, but because of harmonic convergence. Otherwise I think Korra with Raava / Unalak with Vattu are as powerful (spiritually), despite the size difference between Raava/Vaatu when they don't inhabit a human. Their size represents the good/evil in the world, so it is constantly changing. The reason Vaatu was so much bigger during S2 finale, was because he influenced other spirits to be bad and because the whole world (spiritual and material) were in pretty shitty places. Imo what made the avatar spirit truly powerful, was the knowledge Raava carried from an Avatar to another. To the point, that in Aang's reincarnation, bending (as far as it's limits were known) was brought to litteral perfection. So even if Raava is stronger with Korra, the true power she offered didn't come from energy bending (which the Avatar can't use like spirits do it outside of harmonic convergence anyway, and they can only use it of it's created from another source outside or only bend the one inside. Short: Korra cannot create energy blasts just because Raava is as big as Vaatu now, since that was a harmonic convergence perk), but instead came from the ability to bend all 4 elements and access all the knowledge on bending them to perfection.

The amp to the power of an avatar is correlated to the size of the spirit, seen by Unavaatu water bending becoming more powerful when he merges. Unavaatu becoming that giant thing wasn't from them merging, since that didn't happen immediately, that seems like energy bending like what Korra did with the guidance of Jinora and her spirit bending. Now of course the knowledge is important, but we can see that some benders just have more inherent ability than others, whether that be their physicality or spirituality or whatever. Korra gaining the larger Raava, who is stronger based on what we know from Wan arc, gives a direct power amp to all her abilities related to spirits, which bending is, again based on Wan arc and spiritually connected people (like Iroh and Zaheer) having higher power ceilings. This isn't to say knowledge < power, they are both important to benders, but Korra specifically is a brute. Having more access to baseline power (moving bigger rocks, having bigger fire plumes, being able to do water towers in base) is important for her.

But then we saw that in the avatar state he was more powerful ten fold, with just fragments of rocks. Because bending at it's finest is about precision not scale. And for that matter, even if we go by size Aang/Roku still had bigger feats. So we don't factually know bigger spirit == more powerful bending. As neither Korra nor Unavaatu unlocked their giant forms without harmonic convergence. And Korra even without Raava showed the same amount of feats. So it stands to reason the power (for creating spirit energy) comes from harmonic convergence and not Raava/Vaatu. They just each needed someone more spiritually connected to highlight to them that they can do it.

A lot of people who watched only original Avatar animated series, think that all of avatars are like Aang - apologist of pacifism. Kyoshi is extremely controversial, intriguing, realistic character (for me). So yeah, if it counts I totally vote on "we know nothing about Kyoshi", rather than "pros and cons of every avatar" (both are pretty big and time-consuming topics, but later is tortuously boring (for me), and well we know in depth about around a dozen (?) avatas, so...)

The running joke well before even the comics was that Kyoshi was a homicidal maniac who would kill everyone who got in her way. Not a pacifist. The thing people need to learn about Kyoshi is that she had no reservations about killing people, but she did understand it was a last resort.
I agree that we should get a Kiyoshi video all about her because I too haven’t looked into her published backstory. But I don’t think it’s correct to say that most people who only watched ATLA thinks all avatars are pacifist unless they are misremembering the show or they just weren’t paying attention. The show made it pretty clear that Aang’s pacifism was directly tied to the ways of the air nomad monks, not the morals of the avatar lineage. Even with what little we learn of Kiyoshi, one of her most defining features was how absolutely ruthless she was and that she had no qualms about killing. And even the previous air nomad Avatar Yangchen had stated that the greater good comes before her personal morals of pacifism, therefore in Aang’s position she would kill the Fire Lord if there is no other way. Even though the Avatar is tasked with restoring and keeping balance, the way they go about making that happen is ultimately up to the individual, and the avatars do not hold a pacifist stance as a general rule at all.
Would LOVE a pros and cons of every bender, I feel like we know the most about Kyushu, Rokku, Korra, and Aang but all the others are hardly known about their life. I like how darkness in this world isn’t evil but necessary for balance. Would love to see a situation where a Dark Avatar is actually needed

A few wrong things in the video. 1. Aang did not break his connection with Roku because he was a firebender. 2. Kyoshi had no opposition from Rangi in wanting to learn firebending and she was only insistent on learning water as well because she had no airbending master and she had a GTA V heist to pull off, not because she was rebellious 3. There is literally a male chief, an old male painter and the dude with the convulsion on Kyoshi Island. Only the Kyoshi warriors were women only and they had no reservations with training Sokka after he humbled himself.
The one thing I’ve always wondered is why Korra didn’t go into the avatar state when Amon blood bended her and took her bending away. She was obviously in distress and the avatar losing their bending is a major problem. I just think about it because Aang would involuntary go into the avatar state during times of distress.

I think that the Avatar can achieve flying that way if they become untethered to whatever it is that binds them, the only reason the other avatars were able to fly was because they either used one set of bending that was heightened by the Avatar State (Korra flying with fire bending in the Avatar State or when Fire Lord Ozai flew using fire bending during the last episode with Sozin's Comet) or when all of the elements are used at the same time (Aang flying in a giant sphere surrounded by all 4 elements

ok so Rangi never told Kyoshi to not learn firebending (the opposite happened, Rangi was Kyoshi's firebending teacher and she gladly did so as so as Kyoshi was revealed to be the avatar, since Kyoshi was already able to earthbend). she did however, made Kyoshi try to bend air at least once b4 starting to learn waterbending because she believed that the avatar was supposed to learn the elements in order or else something bad might happen (btw this belief, which is very common in the avatar world, was kinda enforced in atla, when Aang burnt Katara when he tried to firebend b4 learning earthbending).

The way I understand it, the Lion Turtles originally gifted Bending via Energy Bending. Avatar Wan was able to receive all 4 elements from each Lion Turtle before merging with Rava. Does this mean that The Avatar, essentially the world’s only Energy Bender, can bestow multiple forms of Bending to a single person?

The thing about the "Every 10,000 years" Thing is in asian culture 10,000 is often synomous with a lot like in the library He who Knows 10,000 things dosnt mean he literally knows 10,000 things it just means harmonic convergance is seperated by a long time. Yes the avatar state is even stronger than the divine spirits because it’s them fused with the person. So their power is added onto each other. This is backed up by the fact that when aang goes on to open his crown chakra. His spirit itself manifested a spirit of his own merged with Raava. And higher spirits are transcendent beings that use bodies as well…Avatars. This is a thing in real life as well, so basically they become transcendent when they enter the complete avatar state. Hypothetically if an avatar actually went and became enlightened by opening their crown chakra permanently they’d basically ascend to being a God. Man how i wished to have seen that😢
I would not say that the only time we see a small momentary power-up with Kiyoshi. On the contrary, we watched Korra routinely play around with this soft avatar state that gave her a boost during training and just playing games with Tenzin’s kids.
Yes. One of if not the greatest series to ever exist objectively. Because of what it holds, not only are there life lessons in there. But you learn about how to discover yourself, your spirit and the world and how humanity can be and how they are. It is the most real life accurate piece of fiction ever written

Aang example: at the end of the fight with ozai he used the avatar state slightly to put out the fire the fire benders that throwed on the ground from the air ship... Korra example: I am not sure what season or episode was it (I think season 2) when she reaced with tenzin's kids via 'air scooter' invented by aang. She used the avatar state really quickly in order to win... Just wanted to point it out, but overall the video was very interesting and enjoyable. Great work.

it's important to note that not all avatar can energybend. Aang was giver the ability by the lionturtle and Korra was given the ability by Aang, but past avatars like Kyoshi, Roku, Yangchen etc, were not able to energybend, and as far as we know they didn't even know the ability existed. energybending is not limited to the avatar (as said by the lionturtle, b4 ppl bent the elements, they bent the energy within themselves, aka they had energybending) but it's such an ancient ability that by the time of the avatars we know about (excluding Wan and beggening at avatar Szeto), energybending wasn't in use and probably no one knew about it.
about Yun being falsely recognized as the avatar: Yun wasn't "recognized" as the avatar the traditional earth kingdom way. this method failed the earth kingdom (because Kyoshi was abandoned by her parents and was homeless for a log time) so they started trying other nations' ways. Yun was discovered afted all nations' methods failed and one of Kuruk's companions found Yun playing Pai Sho and winning using the technique Kuruk used and told very few ppl what it was. Kuruk's companion took it as a Yun knowing the technique through being the avatar and having his past avatar's knowladge, when in reality we learn it was a total accident that he figured it out. Kyoshi was at some point found by an air nomad who was Kuruk's companion who decided to take care of her. as she grew up, the air nomad (who became her father figure) gave her a job in the avatar's mantion so she had a place to stay when he's away and that meant Kyoshi' Yun and Rangi (a firebender who was the avatar's bodygourd) became close friends. Kyoshi was founf to be the avatar after 2 things happened: 1. she recited a poem written by Kuruk, a poem only the air nomad companion of the avatar knew about. after hearing her recite it, he told Kyoshi to keep it a secret cuz they didn't know for sure that she's the actual avatar yet and he didn't want any rumours going around 2. shortly after the poem incidant, Kyoshi accompanied Yun at a mission near the south pole and a fight started. Kyoshi's avatar state was accidentally triggered in battle (she didn't have control over it) so everybody discovered she's actually the avatar
the avatar doesn't need to use the avatar state to talk to past lives or regain knowladge about them (nor was it ever used for that). the avatar can try to connect to their past lives at any time, tho it's a skill that's not easy to master for anyone. for example, it was pretty easy for Aang to connect with Roku, and later with the other past avatars, when needed. however, it was very difficult for both Korra (b4 losing her connection to them completely) and for Kyoshi, who nearly drowned trying to talk to Kuruk once. as for Yangchen, i don't know yet how easy it was for her to purposefully talk to past avatars (Im in the middle of reading The Dawn Of Yangchen and haven't started The Legacy Of Yangchen), but ever since she was a child she used to have visions of memories of past avatars. she wasn't alway able to differenciate her own memories with a past avatar's memory, and when she had memories of great emotional pain of a past avatar (such as losing a companion), she would feel great physical pain.

You know Kyoshi was very likely the cause of the fire nation's war. Think about it Roku and Sozin grew up together probably hearing of Kyoshi's tyranny and how she would kill with whoever she didn't like with unstoppable power and acting as she pleased. The firelord of that time most likely took in Roku with the express purpose of fostering a relationship between the two so that now that it was their nation's turn, they could capitalize on such a precedent. I admit it's just a theory but it would explain why Sozin was so certain Roku would go with his plans since the most recent avatar had a tendency to go with her own wishes no matter the outcome.

I recommend that you read her story. It is well written. A detail that was missed in this video was how hard she and her parents made it for the ones searching for the Avatar. Her parents were actively avoiding the Avatar searchers, thinking they were the authorities trying to catch them for being thieves.

My question is at what era will this new series take place? Korra's series took place in the 1920s equivalent, give or take one or two prior decades. It will probably take maybe 60 to 100 years after Korra. So, it could take in the modern era equivalent of today.

The thing people need to learn about Kyoshi is that she had no reservations about killing people, but she did understand it was a last resort.
I agree that we should get a Kiyoshi video all about her because I too haven’t looked into her published backstory. But I don’t think it’s correct to say that most people who only watched ATLA thinks all avatars are pacifist unless they are misremembering the show or they just weren’t paying attention. The show made it pretty clear that Aang’s pacifism was directly tied to the ways of the air nomad monks, not the morals of the avatar lineage. Even with what little we learn of Kiyoshi, one of her most defining features was how absolutely ruthless she was and that she had no qualms about killing. And even the previous air nomad Avatar Yangchen had stated that the greater good comes before her personal morals of pacifism, therefore in Aang’s position she would kill the Fire Lord if there is no other way. Even though the Avatar is tasked with restoring and keeping balance, the way they go about making that happen is ultimately up to the individual, and the avatars do not hold a pacifist stance as a general rule at all.
Would LOVE a pros and cons of every bender, I feel like we know the most about Kyushu, Rokku, Korra, and Aang but all the others are hardly known about their life. I like how darkness in this world isn’t evil but necessary for balance. Would love to see a situation where a Dark Avatar is actually needed

A few wrong things in the video.
1. Aang did not break his connection with Roku because he was a firebender.
2. Kyoshi had no opposition from Rangi in wanting to learn firebending and she was only insistent on learning water as well because she had no airbending master and she had a GTA V heist to pull off, not because she was rebellious
3. There is literally a male chief, an old male painter and the dude with the convulsion on Kyoshi Island. Only the Kyoshi warriors were women only and they had no reservations with training Sokka after he humbled himself.
The one thing I’ve always wondered is why Korra didn’t go into the avatar state when Amon blood bended her and took her bending away. She was obviously in distress and the avatar losing their bending is a major problem. I just think about it because Aang would involuntary go into the avatar state during times of distress.
because amon was bending her chi paths, blocking her powers. thats how he took away peoples bending, by blocking their chi

So you know how Zaheer became “untethered” and gained the ability to fly. Legend says the only other person to do so was Guru Laghima. I think that the Avatar can achieve flying that way if they become untethered to whatever it is that binds them, the only reason the other avatars were able to fly was because they either used one set of bending that was heightened by the Avatar State (Korra flying with fire bending in the Avatar State or when Fire Lord Ozai flew using fire bending during the last episode with Sozin's Comet) or when all of the elements are used at the same time (Aang flying in a giant sphere surrounded by all 4 elements

I'll be honest, Legends of Korra had a lot of interesting ideas, and was really trying to expand on what was established in the original series. Sadly, for some reason they messed it up and didn't do that good a job leading up to those things.
A Dark Avatar was an interesting concept, but it never really led anywhere. I mean, the guy only knew Water Bending and never got a chance to learn the other bending arts. Imagine if we could expect an evil Avatar to reincarnate at some point in the future.
I also kinda hate how they never answered some of the questions about our original characters, like we never found out if Sokka had any kids, cuz all the others had and we met all of them, but Sokka was completely neglected and barely mentioned.
Also, this is just a person pet peeve of mine, but I was not a fan of the technological advancement in Korra, it felt out of place and kinda ruined the world I had grown to love in the Original series. The appeal of a fantasy world is that it's not our world, and if you add technology to it, it becomes more like it, ruining the "magic" of that world.

The point of the Dark Avatar was to show why there can never be a Dark Avatar. Because the Avatar exists because of the harmony between spirit and man. Which can only be achieved through peace. Hence Vaatu betrays Unalaq and takes over his body once he outlived his usefulness.

Yes, it's almost as if those questions are irrelevant to Korra's journey and thus had no reason to be given any exposition.

I respect your opinion, and I used to think the same thing, but it is not out of place once you remember how steampunk ATLA was, how the war brought the industrial revolution and how there was a whole episode dedicated to showing Aang that when the world changes, people have to change with it.

ok so Rangi never told Kyoshi to not learn firebending (the opposite happened, Rangi was Kyoshi's firebending teacher and she gladly did so as so as Kyoshi was revealed to be the avatar, since Kyoshi was already able to earthbend). she did however, made Kyoshi try to bend air at least once b4 starting to learn waterbending because she believed that the avatar was supposed to learn the elements in order or else something bad might happen (btw this belief, which is very common in the avatar world, was kinda enforced in atla, when Aang burnt Katara when he tried to firebend b4 learning earthbending).
I demand more Kyoshi and Yangcheng content! I'd love to see how each avatar's philosophies were different from one another and how the seemingly right decision in the moment led to bad consequences later like with Yangcheng and Kuruk

The way I understand it, the Lion Turtles originally gifted Bending via Energy Bending. Avatar Wan was able to receive all 4 elements from each Lion Turtle before merging with Rava. Does this mean that The Avatar, essentially the world’s only Energy Bender, can bestow multiple forms of Bending to a single person?
no because the human spirit cant handle that, theyd need to attach to a spirit which is extremely dangerous as we see in the begginnings episodes and can probably only happen with raava and vaatu. bestowing bending is another question which i dont think well learn the answer to
The thing about the "Every 10,000 years" Thing is in asian culture 10,000 is often synomous with a lot like in the library He who Knows 10,000 things dosnt mean he literally knows 10,000 things it just means harmonic convergance is seperated by a long time. So it might not have literally been 9,829 bg It could have been a lot longer which is also why when Roku says he learned fire bending 1,000 times in a thousand lifetimes (a sick line btw) it dosn't mean every avatar was like 10 they were likely older

Yes the avatar state is even stronger than the divine spirits because it’s them fused with the person. So their power is added onto each other. This is backed up by the fact that when aang goes on to open his crown chakra. His spirit itself manifested a spirit of his own merged with Raava. And higher spirits are transcendent beings that use bodies as well…Avatars. This is a thing in real life as well, so basically they become transcendent when they enter the complete avatar state. Hypothetically if an avatar actually went and became enlightened by opening their crown chakra permanently they’d basically ascend to being a God. Man how i wished to have seen that😢

I would not say that the only time we see a small momentary power-up with Kiyoshi. On the contrary, we watched Korra routinely play around with this soft avatar state that gave her a boost during training and just playing games with Tenzin’s kids.

it's important to note that not all avatar can energybend. Aang was giver the ability by the lionturtle and Korra was given the ability by Aang, but past avatars like Kyoshi, Roku, Yangchen etc, were not able to energybend, and as far as we know they didn't even know the ability existed. energybending is not limited to the avatar (as said by the lionturtle, b4 ppl bent the elements, they bent the energy within themselves, aka they had energybending) but it's such an ancient ability that by the time of the avatars we know about (excluding Wan and beggening at avatar Szeto), energybending wasn't in use and probably no one knew about it.

about Yun being falsely recognized as the avatar:
Yun wasn't "recognized" as the avatar the traditional earth kingdom way. this method failed the earth kingdom (because Kyoshi was abandoned by her parents and was homeless for a log time) so they started trying other nations' ways. Yun was discovered afted all nations' methods failed and one of Kuruk's companions found Yun playing Pai Sho and winning using the technique Kuruk used and told very few ppl what it was. Kuruk's companion took it as a Yun knowing the technique through being the avatar and having his past avatar's knowladge, when in reality we learn it was a total accident that he figured it out. Kyoshi was at some point found by an air nomad who was Kuruk's companion who decided to take care of her. as she grew up, the air nomad (who became her father figure) gave her a job in the avatar's mantion so she had a place to stay when he's away and that meant Kyoshi' Yun and Rangi (a firebender who was the avatar's bodygourd) became close friends. Kyoshi was founf to be the avatar after 2 things happened:
1. she recited a poem written by Kuruk, a poem only the air nomad companion of the avatar knew about. after hearing her recite it, he told Kyoshi to keep it a secret cuz they didn't know for sure that she's the actual avatar yet and he didn't want any rumours going around
2. shortly after the poem incidant, Kyoshi accompanied Yun at a mission near the south pole and a fight started. Kyoshi's avatar state was accidentally triggered in battle (she didn't have control over it) so everybody discovered she's actually the avatar

the power level, of all previous avatars, are all the same.
the only difference, are the hosts naturally ability, to use it properly.
the avatar doesn't need to use the avatar state to talk to past lives or regain knowladge about them (nor was it ever used for that). the avatar can try to connect to their past lives at any time, tho it's a skill that's not easy to master for anyone. for example, it was pretty easy for Aang to connect with Roku, and later with the other past avatars, when needed. however, it was very difficult for both Korra (b4 losing her connection to them completely) and for Kyoshi, who nearly drowned trying to talk to Kuruk once. as for Yangchen, i don't know yet how easy it was for her to purposefully talk to past avatars (Im in the middle of reading The Dawn Of Yangchen and haven't started The Legacy Of Yangchen), but ever since she was a child she used to have visions of memories of past avatars. she wasn't alway able to differenciate her own memories with a past avatar's memory, and when she had memories of great emotional pain of a past avatar (such as losing a companion), she would feel great physical pain.

You know Kyoshi was very likely the cause of the fire nation's war. Think about it Roku and Sozin grew up together probably hearing of Kyoshi's tyranny and how she would kill with whoever she didn't like with unstoppable power and acting as she pleased. The firelord of that time most likely took in Roku with the express purpose of fostering a relationship between the two so that now that it was their nation's turn, they could capitalize on such a precedent. I admit it's just a theory but it would explain why Sozin was so certain Roku would go with his plans since the most recent avatar had a tendency to go with her own wishes no matter the outcome.

A detail that was missed in this video was how hard she and her parents made it for the ones searching for the Avatar. Her parents were actively avoiding the Avatar searchers, thinking they were the authorities trying to catch them for being thieves.

Korra's series took place in the 1920s equivalent, give or take one or two prior decades. It will probably take maybe 60 to 100 years after Korra. So, it could take in the modern era equivalent of today.
