  • Michigan became the 26th state to join the United States on Thursday, January 26th, in 1837.
Michigan is the 11th largest state by area in the United States covering 96,716 square miles
The capital city of Michigan is Lansing.
The official state motto for Michigan is “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice” which means “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.”
The state of Michigan is bordered by Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin in the south, and Canada and the Great Lakes in the east, north, and west. In fact Four of the Five Great Lakes share borders with Michigan, they are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Erie.
This is a pretty good reason for why Michigan is sometimes called the Great Lakes State!
