“From a certain point of view” Lmao this man really said the only instrument that is always in tune is he trumpet. That’s the funniest shit I ever heard
AGREED !!! I've been preaching this for years, ever since it became clear ... trumpets do all the work and saxes get all the credit. Amen Wynton , amen!
As a woodwind player, (clarinet, sax and flute) most of what he says is so true. I have never heard a trumpet that was out of tune, unfortunately I have heard many trumpet players that play them that way.
man, you really do have it out for Wynton. Please don't forget how outstanding a musician he is. I had a chance to talk to him about this a year ago actually, and he told me how ridiculous it is that people think he hates all the "new jazz" (as you put it) musicians. He really doesn't, he's a very generous and kind person.
Is that a jab at your brother Branford, Winton?? lol. I'm a fan of horns, woodwinds and brass with a bias towards the 'chick magnet'. Won me over 35 years ago and still playing.... in tune that is! ;)
what miles, coltrane, mingus, and whoever else did to push the limits of jazz was because they had certain, new musical ideas that they wanted to express. jazz is all about freedom--you can't say to anyone that they have to move on and listen to a certain style of jazz. i love chick corea and red nichols. its a free country! play/listen to what you want. wynton prefers acoustic jazz; to each his own, man! to say wynton's hurting jazz is close-minded.
Funny...I know he's just kidding when he's saying the trumpet is always in tune. Trumpets, due to compromises in their construction, have certain notes that are inherently out of tune to varying degrees. Examples would be low D and C#. Slides are manipulated to mitigate these flaws. Source of knowledge: I've played the trumpet for over half my life (13 years)
" certain notes that are inherently out of tune to varying degrees" " Examples would be low D and C#. Slides are manipulated to mitigate these flaws" so... whats your point? certain notes are inherently out of tune, but the slides mitigate these flaws... right... so, is the trumpet out of tune?
@rlholo Any instrument that does not have fixed pitches can be perfectly in tune in any system. Trombones, strings can tune to any temperament. Clarinets have quite a bit of flexibility as they are capable of glissandos. Trumpets haave lots of possibilities with alternate fingerings and slide movements, saxes have many alternate fingerings too. Pianos, well ,they're hopeless.
In a way he is right, the loudest insturment is what people hear most, and if all the quieter insturments arent in tune with the loudest one, it sounds like shit, also, most trumpet players (most, not all!) have good ears, their insturment demands a good ear. I'm nearly always in tune, as long as I'm not really tired. Then I tend to go flat.
He is telling the truth. It doesn't matter if the lead player is "out of tune" you still got to go with it. You need to blend with the lead player. If you don't you do that are going against the music.
In all fairness to Wynton, and the thing many people fail to realize is that he is a brilliant musician and tireless educator. But people cannot separate the intellect and talent from the personality. And from a personality standpoint alone, Wynton is one hundred times better than he used to be....I mean, let's face it, there were times when Wynton could be brusk and downright nasty to people. Over 30 years ago very few people liked Wynton because of his arrogant, condescending attitude toward almost everyone and everything (hell, he even talked shit about Miles Davis). But he doesn't act that way anymore. Let me make myself perfectly clear: I totally respect the man and his enormous contributions to music and to American culture.
Steve Osgood, I got a big kick out of a quiet interview with Miles, when somebody asked him about Bill Evans, Miles answered, "I learned a lot from him." The thing is, we all did... but, Evans' arrogance and use of narcotics took him away from us to soon... All we can do is Imagine what Evans would have to say today... Wynton's father is the one with the soul for playing it like it should be played as far as I'm concerned. Wynton can talk and teach, but soulful playing just doesn't happen.
@gusgus80 The horns are separated into two families, the noble brass, and woodwinds. Now brass intruments are all made of metal, and can be played very powerfully. The woodwind instruments, with the exception of the clarinet, are also made of metal, but their sound is produced by blowing on wooden reeds. Now you never see a woodwind player not licking on a reed or playing around and fooling with it, and complaining about brass players playing too loud.
I love that brass player think they are good . When we all know that TENOR and Bari sax rules the day . Like a PSA just trying to give the brass some hope . One day brassie you will be as good as the woodwinds .
Wynton is not closed-minded. There are/were millions of other people in the world (both during the "new" jazz era and now) who did not enjoy listening to jazz in the 60s. That doesn't mean they're closed-minded people, it just means that it didn't appeal to them. Sometimes people can't help what they don't like. Wynton doesn't disrespect the new age jazz musicians nor their music, he's just not into what they're playin. Its a psychological phenomena; the music appeals to some and not to others.
I've literally heard Wynton say, "I have a lot of respect for Miles and all those other guys and their music; it just not my vibe though." Like I said, he respects their music even though it doesn't appeal to him.
Haha nice. I will agree for the most part. Hell, I haven't played in tune a day in my life! (It's worse on sax) Trumpets around here though, no such luck with tuning.
“From a certain point of view”
Lmao this man really said the only instrument that is always in tune is he trumpet. That’s the funniest shit I ever heard
Because when _everyone's out of tune..._
*_no one is_*
"That's why they all jealous of us"- Why did he look like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Tracy Morgan all rolled into one when he said that?
Wynton, you are simply too kind...
...to the clarinet players! 😄
AGREED !!! I've been preaching this for years, ever since it became clear ... trumpets do all the work and saxes get all the credit. Amen Wynton , amen!
Obviously he's joking around he has a wide range of humor! Smh at some these comments
Hysterical. From the perspective of a trumpet player. And he did it without cracking up.
As a woodwind player, (clarinet, sax and flute) most of what he says is so true.
I have never heard a trumpet that was out of tune, unfortunately I have heard many trumpet players that play them that way.
"Our big cousin the Tuba" LMAO
Now THAT'S funny!

Haha. Wonder what friend he made this for...
sharon stolper ha ha ha

luv his music
This is why I listen to all of your music! Tell it how it is Wynton!
THEY'RE ALWAYS OUT OF TUNE!!! Dying here!!! lol
I love hearing good Trumpet players talk. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside ;-)
I am still laughing my head off!!!!
what miles, coltrane, mingus, and whoever else did to push the limits of jazz was because they had certain, new musical ideas that they wanted to express.

play/listen to what you want. wynton prefers acoustic jazz; to each his own, man! to say wynton's hurting jazz is close-minded.
Okay.
wynton carries the legacy of the golden era of jazz. how the hell could that be considered hurting it?
Excellent Wynton. A great sense of humour.
HILARIOUS!!! You go, Wynton!!! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! lol
that's right, Too Bad!!! love this guy
Spoken like a true trumpet player!!!

Thanks for posting.
Here's a theory, Mr. Marsalis is expressing some sibling rivalry against his big brother.
Preach brother, preach.
AMEN TO THIS!! Long Live Trumpets!
Damn straight!
Ha! That was my morning laugh right there...
One thing I don't know about.... I've heard some trumpets sounding like cats in heat... I wouldn't say trumpets are always in tune, heh.
ROFLMAO!!
What is this from? I'd love to see the rest of this.
"the only instrument that's always in tune is the trumpet"
rofl.
That is so good. Except the last part. The trombone is the one that is always in tune...well, with the exception of 5th position.
he forgot to mention that the concept of hitting the right note is foreign to brass players.
Hahaha I love this gentleman:))))
y're totally right. Just talking the truth...
This, Made. My. Life.
:)
That´s the reaction of someone who realizes he just lost an argument.
My pleasure.
hahahhahah. the flute is thrown in there just for good luck. hahhahhahhahahah. this is going in to my ipod.
priceless
what a Legend
It Just Ends Like That Lmao
Nice to hear Wynton has a sense of humor...I wish it was true that all trumpet players play in tune..myself included!
It censors his awesome. It cannot be looked upon by mortal eyes.
Thank you.
I agree with you, it was definitely a lot of fun to watch this a couple of times...haha..
You do realize that this isn't meant to take seriously. He's having fun teasing the other instruments.
Love it 😂

oh i remember the days of playing trumpet in the back row waiting for everyone else to tune up
In a way he is right, the loudest insturment is what people hear most, and if all the quieter insturments arent in tune with the loudest one, it sounds like shit, also, most trumpet players (most, not all!) have good ears, their insturment demands a good ear. I can't decide what's funnier: The joke this guy is making, or how seriously everybody takes it.
Amen.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣....I love Wynton...So wise
Amin!
It looks like this guy is trapped between dimensions or something.
oh yeah and the trombone has a much better chance of being in tune than any trumpet :)
He is telling the truth. It doesn't matter if the lead player is "out of tune" you still got to go with it. You need to blend with the lead player. If you don't you do that are going against the music.

THE TRUTH BROTHA!
True. True.
"that's why they're always jealous of us, never forget that." lol

Miles Davis was a douche. It was said then and it will still be said today. Fantastic musician and innovator. But nonetheless a douche
ben kane
he played the douche but i found him to be not. first hand.

this was why I couldn't stand him as a kid. Now, he seems like such a kind, humble dude. Something changed when he hit 30 years old.
And what might Wynton make of the humble button accordion from that upstart Richard Galiano?
I play tenor sax but this is hilarious :D
I know I'm just pointing out how we always stand by our instrument families, that's why I love them all
LIKE A BOSS
this video is awesome. and very true.
Yes!
I love you Wynton
yep brass sounds way cooler than the woodwinds
good point. Deal. :)
I For one Play 4 Instruments !!
And My Favorite is Trumpet ! I Agree with everything he says.
LMAO never seen this comedic side of wynton b4...
Finally!!! Thats what im talkin bout!!!
Brass rules!!!.....but trumpets are the best.
i play sax. sadly i agree with him. this guy is the man!
I've never met a woodwind player who didn't complain about reeds.
@gusgus80

I see alot of People are getting A Lil "Upset" Because he's telling the truth !
That's why they all jealous of us.
Haha tell it, Wynton!
sure that's why they have the oboe and not the trumpet sound the tuning note for the orchestra :)
Ha ha ha !! Politics in music in effect !
Hahaha, I love you Wynton
I love that brass player think they are good . When we all know that TENOR and Bari sax rules the day . Like a PSA just trying to give the brass some hope .
One day brassie you will be as good as the woodwinds .
Wynnie has never looked better.
He didnt mention the baritone horn. I enjoy playing the baritone horn than the trombone.

ROTFLMAO!!! Nice to hear someone like Wynton telling it like it is.
Sure .... now tell that to the high school band audience
for my bad luck, he's right.
Gotta love the guys who can only play one note at a time.
You technically can play 2 at once
trumpets are so awesome
one trumpet player is equal to about 13-14 clarinets
Me too.
haha, subtle
I've literally heard Wynton say, "I have a lot of respect for Miles and all those other guys and their music; it just not my vibe though." Like I said, he respects their music even though it doesn't appeal to him.
27 people play saxophone.
Haha nice.
I will agree for the most part. Hell, I haven't played in tune a day in my life! (It's worse on sax) Trumpets around here though, no such luck with tuning.
That's pretty funny :)
Oh well one more thing every college wind ensemble tunes to the clarinet not the tuba, but maybe you'll know that someday.
There are people who would do it anyway.
