This was the top of the steam engines, able to help USA haul huge amounts of war supplies to the coast during WW2 . BIG TK YOU to Union Pacific for have the foresight to restore this living legend !!
The incredible strength and beauty of this marvel of engineering and human creation, which I discovered in 1967, is astounding - a true symbol of America's might, admires everyone, wherever he is. Azer. M Baku, Azerbaijan
Hola, desde PANAMÁ me ha dado tremenda emosion ver y escuchar ese espectacular TREN he recordado mi niñes y juventud. Hoy tengo 71 años y estoy en verdad emosionado.
I have a question about the operation at the start. Is Big Boy just rolling along while the diesel is pushing? Is that why its exhausting all the steam through the sides of the cylinders instead of out through the stack? If so, is it an operational reason? Like they are building up steam in the yard while the diesel pushes the train out to the main track?
When they first start moving in the morning, they have to have the cylinder cocks open to vent out all of the condensed water from inside the locomotive, otherwise they could risk blowing up a cylinder head. Until all the moisture is removed from the system, the diesel assists slightly (notch 2 or 3).
The big boy does the majority of the work. They use the diesel to help where slipping might occur to reduce tyre wear and mostly for braking to reduce wear on the big boys brake blocks
Ahh UP 4014 I wish it would come down to Alabama but cannot leave the state aahh tell the government need more coal servic yards also only allowed to pull passenger and some cargos is not lagging anymore 🙃🤩
Man that whistle at 01:02:24 is just hauntingly beautiful. Easily one of my favourite parts of the 4884

Not just during World War II, the Korean War era and 1950s as well! There's a reason UP kept them on the operating roster until 1960.
@@thunderbird1921 the 844 was never retired... it's been in service ever since!

@@FanRailer Thank you! Excellent video!
@@FanRailer One last question, does Big Boy provide power to the train or does that come from the Diesel?
Neither. Electricity for the passenger cars comes from generator car 2066. Freight diesels are not provisioned to supply HEP to passenger cars.
Well Big Boy was able to visit New Orleans before Ida does that.
Where do you get tickets to ride this train?
Once the 4014 entered N O where did it turn around & how wye or turn table
double wye. go here and zoom in on NOLA www.up.com/forms/steam-trace.cfm
I see my Car in the shot in Addis lol
