In one of their season recaps of Midst I think they talked about how crazy long it took to put those moving scenes together and if a change was made it was an insane amount of work for a few minutes of video. This might have been the compromise.
I have read so many lovecraftian style stories but this podcast just reinvented for me what horror can feel and look like. Listening to this episode was like truly discovering what lies at the edge of the universe and coming back from the experience with a beating heart and a mind that almost falls apart as it tries to process what just happened. It is emotional but not in the typical, that makes me afraid kind of way but more as a tingle that goes right under your skin and rattles your bones, it's addicting
Oh man, the foreshadowing with the Scientist's moths being attracted to the sound was nice. I wonder why some sort of Foldeater would be as far away from the Fold as possible.
@@tyriafranks7277 I had the same thought, I was sure they'd pass through the opening to find themselves at the bottom of the Fold ocean. I was not expecting something to attack them and suck the Fold out of them. But maybe what's what keeps the boundary from mixing 🤷🏻♂️? Everything at the bottom gets all the fold sucked out of it only to sink further down and form the new topmost layer of Mica? Is that why everyone around them was worried? Are they almost mostly made of Mica now? Barely alive with no Fold in them?
Listening to this episode a day after the election was WILD. Also, kudos to Xen for adding another nightmare to their ever-growing tally. Conceptually, I don't have a fear of large creatures, but the sound effects alone were enough to make me reconsider.
Stick a label on the map at the top of the world which says "Here there be dragons. We are not kidding, they will suck your soul out and then eat you."
This was intense... So intense, even though I was home, safe and sound, I felt as if I myself was on the verge of a cosmic precipice. Masterful storytelling yet again!
Oh, we are going to have to have a looooooong talk about this episode. Definitely giving me that Mountain of Madness feel. The fear and wonder and awe while being so close to incredible danger.
I'll be honest, I havent been as engaged with the story so far compared to the original and Moonward but this episode felt really good. It's eldritch, suspenseful and has much more story than the previous episodes.
Every time they say 'shaft' my inner Laura Bailey starts cackling to the point that I worry I won't be able to continue. I'm less than 10 minutes in. Send help.
The implications of this are so terrifying. Like are all people fold? If people have never set foot in fold is it possible for a person to not be of the fold in the slightest? Is exposure to the fold slightly altering to yourself, your spirit, or is fold made out of the spirits of the dead? Every possible route seems scarier than the last. And what exists in the space above? Are they being protected by the mica? Where is it sourced from? Will it one day all crack and scatter away? What happens when... that thing... is allowed to enter the cosmos? And what could possibly exist along the bottom?
I think mica goes down fold goes up. the fold being pulled from the people to the beast made me think these people living relatively close to the fold compared to this beast would have more fold particles. more exposure. it makes me think more about radiation exposure.
I have firsthand experience with almost falling unconscious when giving a blood sample, so the crew's reactions to having the fold sucked out of them felt very realistic. Er... good job!
Ok but I'm not ready for them to go back down, I want to learn more about this... thing, and if it was opening up into an open space, then it must mean that there's even _higher_ than where they encountered that thing, right? Right?? Omg why is it not already next wednesday 😅
I had so many ideas and theories about what might be found, and that was not one of them. h u h. usually when I read/watch/listen to stories, something ticks in the back of my mind tracking beats, anticipating the ups after the downs and vice versa. and sometimes, the narrative is so evocative and captivating that the ticking stops for a minute, and then I get blindsided by, you know, the horrors. incredible storytelling, amazing worldbuilding, this podcast is really something else.
That was very insane! Spoilers for the episode btw Ok so everything that is alive in the cosmos seems to be at least partially made of fold. The human characters were literally bleeding it! I assume food is so scarce so high in the Un that the only way to live is to feed upon the lifeforce of other things with fold. Fold and mica together create literal mayhem so maybe the creatures up there use fold in a controlled way to make energy, basically using it as food? Only question would be how fold came up there for life to recycle it between itself. Also also the sound of the creature seems to be one of the ways it siphons fold; it attracts the moths from that guy in the outpost and it also made the characters at peace with death.
That would make sense, I originally thought the big the surprise would be that the fold and Un looped upwards with the upper un being connected to the deep fold. But I couldn’t get the thought out of my head of “why would something that eats extremely potent fold go after the trace amounts in humans? Or need to siren call fold to it” So it would make more sense for it to consume fold itself, carving tunnels into the upper Un looking for it or for pockets of life like the character’s encountered earlier! But if it eats fold does it have fold in it too? Do they eat each other up there? But they’d need fresh food for a food chain right? Or do they subsist off very little due to pure efficiency?
@@DukryGoser feels like fold gets called up and mica falls down. we know mica turns into tiny shards, microscopic shards. I think creatures like this feed off the trace amounts of fold like a whale and plankton and there is enough microscopic fold to filter up to let is survive. Our adventurers were a steak.
looping around to the deep fold was one of my thoughts before as well, but now it seems almost like the upper un is a wall built to protect against... whatever is past it
I was sure they'd pass through the opening to find themselves at the bottom of the Fold ocean. That theyd discover their world was a closed loop of sorts. *SPOILERS* Alright, so, until I hear them give whatever the fuck that horror was a name, I’m hereby dubbing it a Sirun (like a Siren, but Un). A (presumably) titanic beast that has some kind of resonance within its vocalizations that calls to the entropy/chaos within living beings (which is either caused by or analogous to the fold, of that I’m unsure, but it was affecting the fold-infused Dark Mica as well, so either way it affects both) to either pacify them for easy consumption, or to consume on its own as some kind of esoteric sustenance. In any case, holy fuck was that spooky and exhilarating! Also - just regarding the episode in general, this one made the lack of the art from Midst both shine and really hurt, because my fucking imagination ran wild with that chase sequence; but at the same time I *really really really* wanted to see someone’s rendition of it. God, I love this show!
I now have a new contender for greatest thing I’ve ever heard in my headphones that fills me with dread!! The sound design, the soundSCAPE, and just all the accolades. (Whatever THAT was/is sounds like a 40k Titan or the sound effect from the Mechanicus intro and it’s so good on the brain but my ears hate me).
take care to manage your headphone volume. You only have two ears and there is more recorded sound than any one human can experience. If you think it is loud enough I encourage you to try it just a little less loud.
@ that staticky buzzing noise that’s in the background of episodes like Coda and Weather where the fold is going fuckshit. I could hear like a version of it in this episode
It would be a nice touch if Dot never achieves realization and Cleo doesn't have a fold gift at all, and at the end they realize they don't really need them. They've found worthwhile lives without them.
I tried to clean my room while listening to this... I dusted a single row of books and then stood in stunned awe.
**Laughs nervously**
What the fuck?
I miss the contextual artwork of the scenes from Midst, but theatre of the mind is in full swing with this series.

I kind of always felt that people had to be part of the fold in some way, given how intimately tied to human psyche it seems to be
