      +D Vass Honestly, Oscar (Will Smith Fish) was so unlikable, that even as a kid watching it, I thought he was terrible. I legitimately felt sorry for Robert De Niro Shark (I forgot his actual name), and was more invested in his side of the story. If the film was about him and Oscar was the villain, I actually think this would have been better. Add in the subplot with annoying-voice Lenny drama of him being against his father. As is? It sucks. And yes, it definitely deserves a Nostalgia Critic Review, especially since, while I didn't like the film, I have some nostalgia from watching this film as a third-grader.

    i never got the whole, getting really big-name celebrities to do voice acting in children's animated films. it would make a lot more sense to me to get professionally trained voice actors, because they'll deliver their lines better, will probably do the work for less pay than a superstar actor, and kids don't care about the voice actors, because they don't know who half of them are, depending on their age.

      i don't know, to me that just seems like an admission of the fact that you're bad at making movies. it definitely makes sense to do it for that reason, but at that point, i think you need to go back to the drawing board

    • @AHylianWarrior
      @AHylianWarrior 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Cal Anime does this ALL THE TIME. They'll hire the "big-name" VAs which are practically their celebrities over there instead of the ones trying to get work. The industry is all the same across the board when it comes to animation.

    • @MalescoM
      @MalescoM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Sometimes there are famous people who do such great voice work and breathe life into their characters. (ie. Jack Black as Po, Steve Carrell as Gru, Robin Williams as Genie)

    • @Altar360
      @Altar360 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Cal Marketing. Sadly, a lot of people see animated movies as just kid's stuff, so having big name actors draw in more of the average joes out there. It's slowly being edged out since they look more for actors that can fit the voices more, and lots of great animated movies use this gimmick, but yeah, there's always cases like this that just gets big names for the sake of drawing in more people

    Isn't it kinda ironic that Jack Black played both Lenny and Po who are literally black-and-white animal characters from Dreamworks films? I just find that pretty coincidental.

      I am bothered by that too, but I grew to accept that the Academy people can nominate or win whatever they want as long as they don't win the worse thing consistently every single time. Imagine how much better this movie could be if Robert De Niro Shark was the main character. The premise could be almost the same with Will Smith Fish pretending to kill his son and Jack Black Shark running away and end up joining him. Will Smith Fish could be the villian of the story so him being a dick would make sense. The story could be about Rober De Niro Shark coming to terms with the fact that his son is gone while trying to get revenge and find his other son. The ending could also be similar as well, with the Sharks learning to accept each other and Will Smith Fish being discovered as a liar and Robert De Niro Shark forgiving him. Fix the designs of the characters some and this could actually be quite decent...

    I think that most of us can agree that this is definitely Dreamworks' bottom of the barrel. Say all you want about Shrek 3 'killing the franchise, at least that film was only a less-than-average film comming off the heels of a amazing 2nd film and it had more reddeming qualties. This on the other hand is just a downright pain to sit through. While nowhere as abysmal as Foodfight or (God Forbid) Where The Dead Go To Die, it's still really painful with one of the worst protagonists ever, crammed with dated pop songs, blatant product placement, tasteless and unfunny jokes, disgusting character design, the clichéd story, and the fact this came off the heels of Shrek 2 is just mind-boggoling.
    I'm glad Jack Black and Angelena Jole redeemed themselves in Kung Fu Panda, but I do hope Will Smith could return for another Dreamworks film to reddem himself.

    "Will Smith fish is SCARY.
    I'm just putting that out there right now. Will Smith, as a fish, is fucking disgusting."
    I already saw this review but I had to come back to this one again just to hear Doug's hilarious rant on how shit this thing looks.
    Despite the fact that, when I was a kid, my mum told me to go stand outside instead of in, y'know, THE NEXT ROOM, when I said I didn't want to watch this lousy movie; that was just because the sharks scared me as opposed to the aquatic incarnation of Will Smith, and I thought that in the vein of the Garfield adaption the shitty writing was an acquired taste that I'd understand when I was older. I grew up with great films Dreamworks' pals at Aardman, along with a mixture of decent films by studios like Dreamworks or Disney, and yet there was a small place reserved for crummy films like this that I'd watch again and again in hopes of enjoying them.
    Anywho, I just came to watch Doug bash this awful film some more.

    This was one of the first movies I actually held a soft spot for when I was a kid, not to mention I didn't know most of the actors that played those roles. At the time, it was pretty comedic and I thought transport NYC underwater was a genius choice. Now that time has passed, I suppose it hasn't aged as well as I thought.

    The only reason this movie is set underwater is because Finding Nemo was a hit a year earlier. The underwater setting literally has nothing to do with the plot, so they try to justify it with fish puns. When you have to justify your setting with puns and not with... I don't know, THE FREAKING STORY, you know you fucked up.

    The only parts of this film I liked were the shark moments, I was genuinely fascinated by their story to the point where I wish this film was about them like a Mafia story of some sharks and orcas muscling in on Don Lino's territory, Frankie gets killed and Lenny has to lead the sharks while trying to maintain his vegetarianism. Not to toot my own horn, but you could've had a dramatic DreamWorks movie predating Kung-Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon, but nope... we get Will Smith Fish. Yay.

I was working at Costco in the meat department and everytime I went to break or lunch, it would be playing on all the TV's in the electronic section for about 3 - 4 months on repeat when I would walk past to clock in and out. • @alixjamieson2177
    @alixjamieson2177 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was back when Dreamworks switched from stylistic original 2D films such as Prince of Egypt and El Dorado and started doing what I suppose were middle fingers from Katzenberg to Disney and Pixar hence Antz and Shrek.
    I kinda liked this movie as a kid but now that I'm older it's really embarrassing. The pop culture jokes and the catchphrases are just SAD ("Raise the Reef, Shark-Slayer, Shell-phones, Seahorse racing")
    Finding Nemo for me is one of the most timeless animated films despite it being set in 2003. It's my second favourite animated film and ranks number 4 on my top 10 favourite films of all time. The reason?
    Well, not only is the story incredibly well written and executed and the characters all fleshed out and identifiable, not only the animation beautiful, and the dialogue having little to no pop culture references, but it's one of the only animated films to have no villain. It's just humans being humans and animals being animals, all surviving. The sharks in that film I'm really impressed with because Pixar got the true nature of sharks down to a T. Scary and intimidating, but mellow and non-threatening. Respectful and laid back but instincts kick in if blood is smelled.
    Here, when you have the "Shark Mafia," it seems silly in comparison. (not that I'm against Robert De Niro's shark, he's actually the best character in the movie and everybody else is a dumbass!) but yeah I think Finding Nemo is a way better film because it portrays what a "sea community" would look like, how news would travel and what the fish would do in their daily life.
    Plus what makes Marlin a likeable, sympathetic character is his past, his will, his caring paternal instinct, his determination and his bravery even when he was terrified to go thousands of miles along the Australian coast to rescue his son.
    Oscar is a despicable excuse for a character! He's lazy, arrogant, takes credit for someone's death, bets his friend's heirloom on the races and acts tough when really he can't do shit.
    The message of Finding Nemo is that the world is beautiful and dangerous and our children must grow up to be careful but not fear it.
    The message of Shark Tale is if you lie you become a celebrity.
    I would say this is the worst Dreamworks film, but Trolls is coming out so it's technically the second. Oh and don't be surprised if we have an Inside Out knock off from them called "Taste Buddies."

    • @whizofdisguise9541
      @whizofdisguise9541 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, when I rewatched the movie I almost had the impression they made the sharks mobsters to make them appear as the usual villains so Oscar would have seemed more likeable compared to them (I see, but if the sharks don’t do any villainous act while Oscar causes more chaos and problems than all of them put together, then don’t be surprised if most of the audience hate him)
