    Finally! You're the first to sharpen a recurve with this unit!!! One of my favorite knives the SCHF 9N is a recurve. Thanks!!!!!!

    @betweenfiveandseven 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The instructions say not to use the stones with a recurve. They direct you to go straight to the ceramic coarse side then fine side. My own experience is that even a mild recurve like a kershaw blur or even less curve like a benchamde 710, you lose contact with the stones in the curved portion. The stones would have to be a lot narrower to avoid that problem. They're an inch and a quarter wide. Even mild recurves like the two I mentioned have a half inch of no contact. The Stones would have to be a little under a half inch wide to work... That, in fact, is something worksharp should consider for a second "upgrade" kit. Either narrower stones on a narrower rocker or three grits of diamond steel in the same sort of carrier the ceramic is in (or both, really).

      You are correct! But it did work well on my recurve. Thinking outside the box. Mild recurve blades it has worked great for me.

    I received the full line as well. I didn’t touch the guided sharpener for months focusing on the Ken Onion pro. I love the guided sharpener!!! It’s awesome. Totally worth it.

    Great video. I was confused about how this works at first, but I'm feeling pretty confident that I get it now. Thanks for sharing. I'm getting one.

    Great vid. Great instruction and techniques. I'm still using a spyderco sharp maker from the early 90s. Still works! Thanks again.

    Thx Bro. Good review. I added this to my "to get" list. Mainly because of how it pivots, as I really like curved blades and this makes it real easy to sharpen curved blades.

      Jerry Morris I stepped outside the box sharpening the recurve on the stone. The instructions say the ceramic rod but it worked just fine.

    Thanks for sucking me in. Now I have to order one of these. I guess I am old school, I still have an oil stone that I use to sharpen knives. It is crazy that this is used dry.

    Looks impressive. I'd consider it for home use. Outdoors I go with a Fjällkniven DC4 and a small leather strop booklet with blue compound.

    Nice that the adjustable ceramic rod doesn't rotate as you pass the knives over it. Noticed you held the base with your free hand as you passed knives over the unit. Implies those feet don't stick well enough but you made no mention of that. Too bad it's incapable of being bolted in-place. The upgrade kit is essentially mandatory increasing total cost. Got tired of hearing "so."

    Thanks for this gauntlet review. I have learned much from each who have reviewed this system so far. Gauntlet was an ingenious idea! I sure wish a company would come out with a system like this for scandi grind knives which are becoming more and more popular these days. There isn't a "great" non-wetstone system that I have yet to encounter. Using a belt based system, like the electric worksharp would work, I suppose... but one of "these" for scandi's would be awesome as well. Thanks Wingman!

      Alan Williams For using this system with Scandi grind knives and wanting to keep the knife a true Scandi, I would suggest locking the stone holder part in place, then take the angle guides off and free-hand it. The nature of the Scandi grind kind of gives it a built in angle guide, IMO.
      Or if you're not a die-hard Scandi person, you could just use the system like it says to. It would just create a secondary bevel on the knife and not keep it to a true "zero grind" or Scandi edge.
      Just my 2 cents :).

    Great review as always, Jon. I really need to get myself one of these systems. Saw a display model at Cabela's last weekend and used it on my EDC blade (Benchmade Griptilian, EXCELLENT knife!) and it was really easy after getting used to it.
    Just curious, what do you use the 25 and 30 degree angle guides on the Work Sharp KO Edition for?

    • @Wingman115
      @Wingman115  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kpw528 Lot's of knives come with different cutting blade angels. 30 and 25 deg angles found on most chopping and general use blades. 15 and 20 deg found on knives designed for slicing.

      I have a griptilian also and it's amazing. This set works to set an edge well, but I use Japanese water stones to polish and hone the edge to an incredible degree of sharpness at 6000 grit

    Great review John.1.
    1. How much compound and petroleum jelly is used?
    2.Do you apply more PJ/C when the leather strop begins too dry ?
    3. Does the leather strop need to be cleaned after a certain number of uses?

    • @Wingman115

    Now that it's been a few years since this video. How would you rate this sharpening system today. Do you know of anything else that would be better or is this system it and no other is needed for sharpening knives. I don't have any type of sharpening systems as of yet.

    • @Wingman115
      @Wingman115  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its one of my go to systems for sharpening knives. The diamond stones have held up really well and I like that I can sharpen my recurve blades with it.

  • @docberger

    Are the stones expected to last a lifetime, or do you think they will have to be replaced at some interval?

      Aaron Berger Over time as with stones they would have to be replaced. But were talking many sharpening from now..

    Anybody know how I can buy spare Coarse and Extra-Coarse diamond plates for the Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System? I tried the Work Sharp web site, it is a VERY basic site. I found pages on the Coarse and Extra Coarse diamond plates, but there are no buttons to BUY or ADD TO CART.
    I've scoured the Internet, but so far, the only hits I have found for individual coarse and Extra Coarse diamond plates are the Work Sharp site. Amazon doesn't sell them individually.
    All advice gratefully received
    Cheers

    Bottom line is whether the pivoting feature really delivers better results. I wouldn't have guessed that an experienced freehand sharpener would have any use for such a gadget but then I admittedly haven't tried it.
