Making a semi-hollow neck-through winter bass guitar

  • The second guitar in the four seasons series :) This time it's a necktrough semi hollow design made from maple and smoked oak veneer. The theme is winter so we took a snowflake and white color as main motifs in this build. It took quite some time to get the design right but after couple of work days the 3d model was complete and we could start the production. The 5cm plank was first cut to desired smaller pieces. each piece was than planed 43mm thickness and glued together into a single block. Glue we used for this project was vinyl acetate based with short open time of 20 minutes. After the glue has cured, the block was left for a week to relieve some possible inner tensions and to achieve uniform moisture level troughout the cross section. The block and the fret board was milled on kuka kr 150 industrial robot. Tension rod is made from two 4mm round cold rolled steel rods, one 4mm inbus screw and eight 4mm nuts. Fret slots were marked with a blade over the paper with precisely printed fret positions and then cut with a small hand saw. After the fret board was glued onto the neck over the truss rod groove and all the necessary holes were drilled, the guitar was sanded and prepped for painting and six coats of varnish. Fret board was oiled with teak tree oil and frets were hammered and then pressed into their designated grooves. Schaller tuning keys and piezo bridge were the choice for this build so after we installed them, it was time for electronics. A good friend of my brothers, Phd student Ante Brizić made schematics for this guitars electronics which we build for only 5 dollars or so.. And it works great! After all the soldering, it was time to put the whole thing together, add a guitar belt, tune the strings an done! This project took us well over 150 work hours.
    Special thanks to Schaller for all the advice about piezo bridge instalation and also to Krešimir Klen- Fish for the final guitar test!.. :D!
    Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D

    Don't think I"ve seen anyone making a truss rod. Interesting.

    • @d1sord3r
      @d1sord3r 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Personally, I wouldn't trust those welds on the rod. There ain't much weld penetration happening and it is crucial to the strength of a welded connection. Doing it like that on an easily accessible part - I don't mind that; having it in a neck of my guitar, under constant tension - not so much. I'd rather do it with a tig torch or figure a way to do it without welding the rod itself, but that's just me. Still, a very cool and unique guitar.

      I know a luthier that makes truss rods himself always. And when I asked him why he laughed saying that it's same thing as factory made and cost fair just as much as factory made truss rods should cost - something about nothing. He said that he's never seen that his hand made truss rods ever broke.

      I suppose electric guitars are a bit easier to build than acoustic ones, but given how specialised a craft luthiers practice, it’s definitely no joke. After all, the maker still needs to do all the same things except for the sound box.

      Cody Evans probably built straight into the bridge

      @@nourel-deenayman3943 seems many basses of this style, have those. Interesting concept.

      They're built into the bridge! If you look at 13:00 where the bridge is installed, you can see the wires from the piezo pickups being run through the body. Each bridge saddle has a separate pickup in it, and each string runs over a tiny piece of metal in the saddle that transfers the string's vibrations.

    Everything about this is perfect, right down to the Hipshot hardware. Masterful blend of machine and hand tool production.

      The hardware is actually Schaller. But still so perfect. :]
