For those saying the sound mixing in this scene is awful, I think it’s actually supposed to be that way. When he’s in the school hallway his voice is supposed to be being drowned out my students talking because that’s the whole point of the song. He feels like he is invisible and it reflects that in the song! I thought it was clever.

Recently got the Blu Ray and Digital Copy. The Sound Mix on this video and THIS video alone was super horrible, like the transfer was fucked up or something.
If you want to see a concept like that done better, I’d suggest listening to the fan-made Encanto song “Turn It Down”. Not just because Encanto is a far better movie with far better commentaries on anxiety and damaged family relationships than the insulting bile that is DEH, but a similar technique used in the song’s chorus is that all the other characters’ parts are played while Dolores sings (to reflect her hearing powers), but they’re not loud enough to drown out her singing. Way better implimentation if you ask me!
Intention or not, it still sucks because you can barely hear what the hell he’s saying, which defeats the purpose of having the song in the first place
I love that the singing in the movie was done live. You can really hear and feel the raw emotion in the song.

I honestly really don’t like the fact that it was sung live. There are parts in the soundtrack where you can clearly hear the room tone cut in and out, and there are points in the movie where the singing suffers and sounds bad because of it (especially in Words Fail which honestly sounds like it’s not even part of the musical number and like Evan just started singing to the Murphys to soften the blow)

@@bsjBejzbe Yeah, this was just a joke I made when this was newly uploaded. I didn't mean for it to get so big. I love this movie, and didn't mean to add to the hate of it.
Also, if I remember correctly, I think the initial upload DID mess up the sound mixing, but I might've just been mistaken.

I don’t understand all the hate this movie gets. I’m a big musical theatre lover and absolutely loved this film. Ben Platt absolutely nailed it.
I think it's cos he looks way older than a high school student he doesn't look 17 or 18 at all
@@ellenshawkelly66 Seen plenty of movies where the actor is much older then the character they are supposed to be portraying. Just look at the original spider man movie, though Peter Parker is supposed to be a high school student, Toby Maguire was 27 when portraying him.
Or if you want a musical example, look no further then the popular 'Grease'. Despite the fact that both lead characters are supposed to be 18, Olivia Newton John was 29 and John Travolta was 23 when it was being filmed.

there are so many reviews of this movie explaining in detail why it sucks so much. and ben platt being too old for the role is not even close to the biggest problem. i haven't even see the movie, but solely based on what i know factually (production wise, etc), this clip and the studio recording of the songs i could talk and hour about all the things that are terrible about it. and all that even though deh is BY FAR one of my favorite musicals!
maybe it's because im not much of a musical person, so I don't understand what people dislike so much about this, but i liked it a lot. yeah, it's a bit awkward, but isn't that the point?

I don’t really understand why the movie gets so much hate, I get that some find it awkward/funny or the other voices too loud, but as someone with social anxiety I can relate to it pretty much
They can accept that they don’t have suicide thoughts depression anxiety afraid to be alone they’re just assholes who think every movie sucks I have watched dear Evan Hansen 20 times already because I am alone I lost my best friend and I want to commit suicide and I barely have any friends and this movie helps me every single day of moving forward and knowing that I am not alone in this world that there are other people out there like me

@@GXKfanbase its the worst thing in the world. Just take it a day at a time no matter how hard things feel. Itll get better eventually i hope. Still fighting the fight so i cant confirm yet
i have never seen the musical, but i've heard the musical is much better for reasons such as the acting or some of the scenes are a little too akward

You know what, I'm gonna say it
Waving Through a Window works as the opening number way better. I LOVE Anybody Have a Map, but when I first watched the musical it made me think that Heidi and Cynthia were gonna be the main characters for a bit, and that it'd be about them trying to connect with their kids. Waving Through a Window is when we really get to know Evan, the main character. It makes more sense to have Waving open the story; we learn about the protagonist as much as we need to as soon as we see him. Am I sad they cut Anybody Have a Map? Yes, but I'm not upset they did it in favor of opening with Waving Through a Window

@@maisy-raecatton366 This isn't because he was singing live, they just messed up the balance between the different audio tracks for this clip. The actual movie didn't have this problem. Him singing live doesn't affect this as this was all just mistakes made in sound editing the clip afterwards.

Ben is fine and all, but who allowed to sound to be mixed that way? I get that maybe they wanted it to sound that way, but drowning out your lead vocalist in background noise typically isn't a very good idea.

I don’t want to hear any of you complaining about how he looks and how the sound-mixing, cuts, etc are trash. To me, this movie was wonderfully done. You guys are all like “You shouldn’t judge someone by how they look” or “The inside is what matters” up until it’s shown on social media. Imagine how the actor feels getting told these things, same thing with the direction team huh? Telling them that their hard work is trash is so bad for their mental health. In a way, it can even be considered cyber-bullying which is one of the things that Dear Evan Hansen showcases. Until you can sing as well as the people in the movie do, edit for a movie, get payed as much as they do, and achieve as much as they do, I don’t want to hear any of you complaining about the movie. I state my case.

But isn't that even more reason to call them to task if they get something wrong? They get paid this much money. Also the people criticising them are more often than not critics, who have been taught and trained in filmmaking to understand it. It's their jobs. I think some complaints about this film are wrong, but having been taught filmmaking, there are some elements here that are straight up wrong. The cuts are actually wrong, they employ a style called rthymic editing which is meant to play to the beats of the music. The issue is that Waving has an inconsistent pace in it's beat, and therefore an inconsistent pace in it's editing style, making it jarring, and off-putting.
@@reecejennings9637 Based on what? On your own opinion? Did you read somewhere that they intended to do something like "rythmic editing" or did you feld it needed that and because it doesn't you automatticly assume its wrong?

This is the prime example of why sometimes a great stage performance doesn’t translate well into a movie version.
Ben Platt’s acting in the movie is very weak compared to his superb performance in the stage version, and also doesn’t help that he’s supposed to be a teenager when he’s clearly 28 years old and the numerous technical problems like the direction, sound mixing, etc.
In short: Great Stage Show, Terrible Movie Adaptation

• Worst Actor - Ben Platt
• Worst Supporting Actress - Amy Adams
• Worst Director - Stephen Chbosky
• Worst Screen Combo - Ben Platt and any other character who acts like Platt singing 24-7 is normal

This movie hurt me so much as a massive fan of the Broadway play. The music is still amazing and emotional but the editing, make-up, writing and pacing was really bad 😞
oh boy. i love dear evan hansen with all my heart, i really do. it's definitely one of my favorite musicals. but i just cannot bring myself to defend... whatever this is supposed to be. it sounds terrible. i adore ben platt's voice and his acting, but what he did on stage just doesn't work in a movie. then... it's a musical film, you're supposed to actually hear the singing, you don't need chatter and noise 10x louder than the music to make it _realistic_ (?) or _drown him out because he's so invisible_ (???) because in reality no one walks through the halls in school singing at the top of their lungs.
the editing, evan's hair, the dialogue, hell, these 6 minutes made me hate heidi! i'm honestly glad i didn't see the whole movie.
edit: i did watch the movie after all which makes me all the more qualified to say that it sucks. also, i _do_ think i'm right and while i acknowledge that others may have a different opinion, i _do_ think they're invalid.

God as much as I love the story and the cast with the exception of Ben (sorry buddy but you look 30 while the rest of your costars actually look like they could be in high school), the editing and sound design of this film is atrocious. This is probably the laziest movie musical in a while. At least Cats tried to look visually engaging.
