My dad had one of these Volkswagens when I was a kid. Every once in a while, I feel nostalgic for this model and do a little internetting on it.

WHAT A beautiful car! The colour, the chrome gear lever, and DEFINATELY the upholstery! Pity my eyesight isn't what it was for driving, or I'd DEFINATELY have to buy it!
Does it have the batteries in what was the front luggage compartment? It's amazing that the electric motor actually is LESS crammed in to the engine bay, than the petrol engine! And the loss of the front luggage compartment isn't too tragic, because you still have the one at the REAR, and the rear seat, of course folds down if needs be! Fascinating beautiful car.
I like how you're going about this project. Eyes wide open and trying to learn as you much as you can from others beforehand. It is also good to see you making some hard decisions such as " investing " in the necessary things early on such as suspension as they will pay you back several times over later . The idea of using the MG drive unit over a Tesla one is interesting. It is certainly the cheaper option early on but I reckon you may regret that decision . It's just my opinion and I am no expert on this subject, however based on my experience with ice vehicles , what seems cheap initially eventually becomes expensive later. Unless you really can't afford the more expensive option in the first place. And let's not forget, time is money. I do really like the MG platform. I think it would be great for other vehicles conversions. I really look forward to watching your progress. I'm sure we're all going to learn heaps.
All good points Bill. I'm still open minded about the right approach and as you'll see in upcoming episodes of the 928EV8 project all these are discussed. Including the idea of going all-Tesla for the 928 and keeping the MG stuff for another car that didn't have a 'performance' priority. Like the barn-find 1960 Jaguar Mk II I missed at auction in the last episode. But I do like the idea of just re-shelling all the MG EV electrics stuff into the Porsche. It should be OK - the torque figures from EV motor and ICE motor are similar. Huge benefits if it works - power steering, HVAC, proper digital dash, full instrumentation, fully integrated AC and DC fast charging, cooling system and engine and battery management. So many plus sides. But if the MG gear isn't fast enough, happy to then swap out the motor. Or go full Tesla for the second 928 build. Options options options...
OMG, the electric opening glove box and screen reminded me when I first got my 928 it had a wee TV screen behind eletric door and DVD player that raised out of middle console by rear seats

It's very nice I probably could do that to a squareback ,, about the air conditioning they have electric pumps now that can pump your freon through your Condenser for your blower..

Okay... so I saw you on Homebuilt by Jeff and decided to come over here to check out your project. Powering a Porche with an electric motor sounds interesting...
Ummm.... this has nothing to do with the Porsche project you told us about... other than the "inspiration" you mentioned. This "better for the environment" trope may be true from a certain perspective - but I continue to hear about the abysmal practices involved in mining the material for the batteries... and just how confounded we are about what to do with batteries that have reached the end of their life. Overall, the environmental cost of electric cars is much higher than the ICE cars - but on top of that there are very few places that has an electric grid capable of supplying power to charge the batteries should EVERYONE switch to electric vehicles. Ideally, we need to find a better way to make the batteries... and charge them with power from renewable sources. I hope you at least acknowledge some of the hurdles we still have to clear as you continue thru this project. I subscribed... and I'm interested to see how this turns out.
It's going to be a long journey. You might be disappointed at how far away I am from having the 928 rolling under its own power. There's a lot of stripping out and disposing of bits and assembly/testing of non-Porsche bits first. Mind you, it took Jeff 200 episodes to get the Alfarrari rolling so maybe tune back in in a year's time. But I did learn a lot of valuable stuff from my drive with Nick. Things I like and things I don't like.
But I don't intend to engage in all the usual anti-EV arguments* otherwise I'll never get any videos made. But you're quite right - look forward to the day when I can charge the thing from renewables and not pay the grid's ever-increasing prices. Suffice to say my motivation is to have a cheap-to-run, reliable, high performance electric Porsche that I will enjoy as a daily driver. Not a drag car. Just a car I'll enjoy driving dailyi. And make a nice V8 noise outside the car if I want it to. Nick's got this own view on environmental issues but I can hardly be called an environmentalist when I have 3 other gas guzzling V8s in the garage. One of which I enjoyed driving today.

Nice! Type 3's are a smidge under-rated! Mine came without a motor so I'm debating on power plant I love the EV conversions, we will see which route happens on my journey. Oh so you arnt using the MG motor for the Porsche? $150K, crashing over road irregularities is a charming VW thing? Or was the camera location accentuating that? Smooth power delivery needs to be complimented by a smooth ride I think. Oh but then I do like ICE cars so why should I complain.
It was interesting to see the Hyper9 but it's not for me. Either the MG's motor as an interim step, then if it doesn't prove acceptable, on to the original Tesla motor as planned. While I appreciate Nick's decision to use the VW's gearbox, I'm pretty sure the whine you heard was normal gear whine from box and diff., that's normally disguised by the ICE motor. And of course the suspension in a 1960s era VW is vastly different from the brilliant design of the 928. I do expect a Porsche to have a lot less noise and ride, well, like a Porsche should. We will only choose damper and spring settings once we know the weight. But Nick makes a good point about chasing down all the squeaks and rattles which will be all the more evident when the motor is so quiet.
I'm concerned this is a way that battery thermal run away will become the future cremation of priceless classics 😢
ICE vehicles catch fire more often than EV's, it's quite commonplace but not as newsworthy as an EV ablaze.
@GerardBendotti Are you sure about that as the percentage of EV's is minuscule, but serious high temperature 🌡extremely toxic fires 🔥 are happening all the time now. I have a hybrid EV & the battery in my model is way safer than current models of my brand now. Are they cutting corners or pushing the limits as insurance companies are increasing dramatically the premiums recently. Problems from expensive/difficult to repair - so vehicles are scrapped more easily if battery compartment damages.
Needs more work before more mass adoption.

Safe travels. But for the record we're propulsion tech agnostics and do enjoy reviewing petrol cars. Expect to see plenty more EV content but plenty of ICE cars too. So maybe a good decision.
