Have been following Jonathan for years, so glad you have interviewed him as he has so much to give to us as Catholics with his symbolic framework/approach to understanding
If you can speak Croatian, the Croatian Byzantine rite parishes have published a book on the Divine Liturgy that speaks about symbols and what everything in the liturgy and beyond means. It is called Liturgika. Not easy to find, I bought one at the co-cathedral parish and it was a blast, much like Romano Guardini's work on sacred symbols. There is a lot of these things, it is just that it is kind of hidden.
Speaking of symbolism, the ads on this video have something striking in common.. there is a large amount of content that elicits disgust.. mostly referencing human body functions and disgusting imagery. Please all, be aware of the nature of the algorthms we are benig subconsciously exposed to and the nature of the business as well as the psycho social agenda behind the glo ball model of reality.

The return of ritual struck me during the recent Covid years. The obsession with masking to ward off illness was a form of secular religious ritual, not science.
Maintain a distance of six feet from each other. Not five feet. Not six and a half feet. Six is the magic number. Do this and you will be safe. But it's fake ritual. It doesn't achieve anything.
And so we have been given
LOGOS. The Word. The Divine Order. The Supreme Divine Ordering on the World. There is no other, only disorder.
In the beginning - was - is - forever will be-
The Word. (The Logos)
We are loved by this Logos. In this we move & have our being.

LOVE this! Have been following Jonathan for quite a while-and wasn’t it Jordan Peterson who helped him be known?!! We need ALL of you. Jordan Peterson is a blessing from the psychological side. He shows people how to think. The Bible is AMAZING! Christ is amazing. The significance of His body and blood has been watered down. We are no longer fluent in the signs and symbols of our faith. We need help in reclaiming this fluency. Bishop Barron is a blessing. Jordan is a blessing. Jonathan is amazing in a different way. What a GREAT conversation.
Loved Jonathan’s advice about parenting. I also maintained closeness and raised her to try to self sacrifice. when in adolescence she was being indoctrinated I took the patient methodical approach with my daughter, always having conversations with her (while also praying), rather than alarmist or giving in to panic. she was also initially sympathetic to wokizms and at 14 was even toying with an alphabet identity from peer influence, but she also started to see the Truth for herself over a few years.

Pride and shame come from God's knowledge of good and evil. Repent of God's knowledge and you can be made whole with the Holy Spirit instead of divided against yourself working iniquity found within. This is the knowledge people perish for lack of having.
@@dansaber4427 what you are saying resonates with me specially because if I'm not mistaken, Paul warns about shame and your claim seems to be biblical. I would rather listen to you expand on this subject. sometimes it's like I'm hearing Christian version of kabala from some of the well-known people interpreting biblical symbols and it makes me nervous, but you sound very clear and rooted in bible and not philosophy
If JBP announced he was a Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox or Anglican or whatever today, the door he has been holding open for non-religious people would close. At some point he will close that door, but he seems concerned to make sure we all have our chance to make it through. I am glad I made it through the front door into the entry hall and that I even now know which room I am heading towards. ;)
That’s a fair assessment. I’m guilty at times of wanting him to close it, yet I walked through it myself, and for all we know, he could be doing exactly what God is telling him to do. To risk your own salvation for the sake of others’ salvation could be seen as the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps he has died to Christ more than any of us have. We do know that Jesus definitely didn’t recruit his disciples based on their piety.
Liturgy as training/exercise/sacrifice is brilliant.
I love Jonathan's explanation of the function of ritual in this interview. Very helpful! I was raised in protestantism, and that is my only option for fellowship at my locale at this time, unfortunately. It has felt wrong my whole life, and it has grated on my spirit, honestly. For one thing, the forced, apparent "spontaneity" within services is getting worse by the day. It is intended to make the experience feel more authentic and organic and real, when it actually makes the gatherings feel common, or profane even. Laid-back services lead to, or reflect (mutually reinforce, i would say) laid-back living and laid-back faith. Furthermore, the sermon as the main feature of the service is wrong. A pastor who thinks he is expositing the word of God preaches his own values and almost uses scripture to advocate for whatever things he thinks are important. And the tag line at the end is always, to wit, "come forward and say you believe in Jesus, and all is well." It just isn't the most sound way to have "church," I don't think.
Maybe I am naive, but I think that regular participation in a liturgical service that was solemn and beautiful and included the eucharist often would change my faith life, and therefore my whole life, for the better. And last but not least, regular opportunity for confession of sins would be the best thing ever.

47:25 that was me in college I became agnostic then very depressed. Don’t know where I would have ended up were it not for my Catholic upbringing. Bishop Barron played a huge role in my coming back and explaining what the actual faith is.

Jonathan is very good at revealing the power of symbols. For many Catholics symbol is a kind of dirty word, an arbitrary stand in for something more important. I see symbols as a fundamental building block of reality. Like "myth" which has become synonymous with falsehood, a myth is a truth underlying the illusion of concreteness, and symbols are its language. We can never fully unpick them, but we should always venerate their power.
He is excellent. Would you say that’s the case for most Catholics? I’d say that Catholics are amongst those who best understand symbol.
@@catholicunscripted It's an ambiguous relationship, partly because we live in a post-reformation world where Christian iconography is viewed with suspicion. The Eastern church deals in archetypes, while Catholic imagery varies from reductive post-VII abstraction, to hyperreal Spanish renaissance wax figures with wounds, real hair and glass eyes. The counter-reformation gave birth to the baroque, the Vatican's enforced style, a kind of show of power by ornamentation, then back to the medieval Gothic and ultimately the suburban bunker style of the Catholic modernists. It leaves symbolism in a no-man's land, and Catholic's somewhat orphaned from their own symbolic language.
@@catholicunscripted in my experience most participating Catholics still live primarily in the left brained secular mindset and then suspend their doubt and kind of create a space where they, based on belief, participate in their faith practices and more or less try to live moral lives and follow the sermon on the mount. Their ability to do so comes obviously from a subconscious connection with Christ that enables them to straddle those two parts of their lives. That may explain what you mentioned about people who are practising Catholics who support feminism and the alphabet movement. They aren’t seeing with spiritual eyes when presented with those arguments. That type of Catholic is different than a fully conscious faith life where they see everything with spiritual eyes and live fully in the Christian story. Jonathan can help people bridge into living fully in an ontological frame where their faith isn’t just about obeying rules and suspending rational doubt to “believe” but rather know and perceive spiritual reality. I believe this is also describable at the level of neurology (iain McGilcrest) where in modernity our left brain is dominant and we lose our eyes to see and ears to hear…
The problem is that there are no definitive explanation of what IS a symbol and exactly what it symbolizes. Ask any group of Catholics, and you will get many different ideas of what is a symbol, and what it is a symbol of, and their ideas about the meaning of the symbol will vary widely. I thought it was funny that Mark referred to the "DaVinci Code" "symbologist". Any "expert" who presumes to tell us all what are symbols and what are not, and what they mean, is usually a sham, and that is exactly what the Davinci Code guy was. That being said, there are some things that Catholics generally agree on certain things we call symbols in the faith, and SOME of that is accurate and real. However, many other groups in Catholicism make up their own, weird, idiosyncratic "symbols" and their meanings, and that gets into a sort of self worshipping paganism, as far as I am concerned.
@@tomthx5804 In semiotic terms, a symbol is something which has only a culturally agreed relationship with the thing it represents. Unlike say, an icon which resembles the thing or person (a painting or sculpture of a saint, for example). It depends whether the church as a whole believes the language of signs and symbols exhausts the meaning of a Catholic object, or it functions in ways that cannot be systematised. I agree that some objects accrue personal meanings that are not fully agreed on by the faithful, rosary beads being one example.
the sad saga of this is as you have mentioned; the enlightenment onward. Obviously, this disenchanted enlightenment has placed us into a darkness blanket enveloping the world.

I think Jonathon’s understanding of purposeful intentional behaviours as essentially being a ritual even brushing your teeth is found very much with Saint Therese , the little flower , who says worship is giving glory to God in every thing you do even, and maybe especially the menial tasks of our day.

12:38 in my experience, people are drawn to neo pagan rituals because they can take responsibility for the enactment themselves and on their own terms rather than being reliant on a priest and the subsequent church teachings. This is individualistic spirituality as opposed to corporate.

With due respect, if you really knew what some Christians are blessed to know and think, and have thought throughout the whole of Christianity (and I hope your - and my - knowledge increase as I am a late, real starter) you would not assume that Jordan Peterson ‘knows our Creator’ better than, say, the Church fathers or the late Pope Benedict and all the saints, for example and even some church goers. This is not to denigrate JP in any way, but he, too, like many of us, is on a journey of ‘knowing’; it is perhaps mostly his exiting (and excitable) transmission of that knowledge which makes us sit up and pay attention, as well as the fact that he’s an expert in psychology. Being humble, I’m sure he would be the first to say it of himself. Further, ‘knowing’ without putting that knowledge into daily practice at the service of God and man is a waste of time. Perhaps you might like to read the books of C S Lewis amongst others. They help me.

@@Blissblizzard Not if carrying extra weight was making his face inflammed and puffy. Also losing weight usually means less insulin resistance. Hyperinsulinemia from too much food/carbs makes people look swollen and tired.

I had to chuckle at your implication that Jordan wrestles with everything-not just God-and then Bishop Barron comes along and very calmly puts the thoughts in succinct order. Both men are brilliant. It’s helpful to many to see how Jordan seeks to answer a question as honestly as possible. His understanding of the human person is invaluable. But if you think it was funny to see how Bishop Barron translates JP, watch JP’s conversation with Dr. Phil. Dr. Phil is a gifted communicator. Freed from his show, he’s dealing more openly, through Merit Street Media, with issues that perplex many of us. To see JP and Dr. Phil together is pretty strange and wonderful. Two very different psychologists. I literally watched while JP went through some tortuous descriptions and questions, then tossing the ball to Dr. Phil, a Texan who speaks plainly. None of that high falutin stuff. Yet, all of these men are gifted and very valuable.
Jordan suffers from psychology-itis. Gets himself tied in knots 🙂

A further point must be perfectly clear before any residual fear still associated with miracles can disappear. The crucifixion did not establish the Atonement; the resurrection did. Many sincere Christians have misunderstood this. No one who is free of the belief in scarcity could possibly make this mistake. If the crucifixion is seen from an upside-down point of view, it does appear as if God permitted and even encouraged one of His Sons to suffer _because_ he was good. This particularly unfortunate interpretation, which arose out of projection, has led many people to be bitterly afraid of God. Such anti-religious concepts enter into many religions. Yet the real Christian should pause and ask, "How could this be?" Is it likely that God Himself would be capable of the kind of thinking which His Own words have clearly stated is unworthy of His Son?
Sacrifice is a notion totally unknown to God. It arises solely from fear, and frightened people can be vicious. Sacrificing in any way is a violation of my injunction that you should be merciful even as your Father in Heaven is merciful. It has been hard for many Christians to realize that this applies to themselves.
I have been correctly referred to as "the lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world," but those who represent the lamb as blood-stained do not understand the meaning of the symbol. Correctly understood, it is a very simple symbol that speaks of my innocence. The lion and the lamb lying down together symbolize that strength and innocence are not in conflict, but naturally live in peace. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God" is another way of saying the same thing. A pure mind knows the truth and this is its strength. Innocence is incapable of sacrificing anything, because the innocent mind has everything and strives only to protect its wholeness. It cannot project. It can only honor other minds, because honor is the natural greeting of the truly loved to others who are like them. The lamb "taketh away the sins of the world" in the sense that the state of innocence, or grace, is one in which the meaning of the Atonement is perfectly apparent.
The Atonement is entirely unambiguous. It is perfectly clear because it exists in light.

Being vegetarian is a virtuous commitment for a variety of reasons. Why is it that Christians always seem to take every opportunity to mock it?
Orthodox monks are vegetarian & often vegan, and orthodox priests and laypeople go vegan for about half of the year during fasting periods. The implication being, it is a sacrifice honoring to God and can strongly aid one's prayer life and connection to God.
For Truth, many ask for evidence, meaning data, but data only becomes evidence with authority. Data is also partial, in that it is that which was recorded, using recording methods designed for the purpose, which was what those undertaking the collection of data decided they wanted. It may be useful for their purpose but as time, especially goes by and the actors change, the assembled data may well become obselescent. We might describe this, not as Truth, but as conformity to expectations. I suppose that most phenomena cannot become data as it defies close description, such as dark energy/matter and the average temperature of the atmosphere for example. Most of the universe cannot, on this consideration become data, let alone evidence and certainly not Truth, or not by such methods.
The ignorance is astounding. It is almost as if you believe you can say how God should behave! Thank goodness for mysterious ways.
Why does everyone pretend Peterson is smart?

I was so close to becoming Orthodox due to Jonathan Pageau but became a Catholic because I just know that it's the true Church and fullness of the Christian faith. I pray that he will come home to Rome but, at the very least, that he will do more and more talks with Catholic podcasters

Here's the catch: We're not just spirits. We're EMBODIED creatures. We both have BODY and spirit.
Hence the requirement for God to come into FLESH. To become human.
If you go for pure spirit, you may not see it yourself, but others, your descendents or followers will interpret that BODY as EVIL, and has to be removed from Existence. That's essentially Gnosticism.
And to add, this way of thinking is the reason why we're here in the first place. Protestantism is essentially a pseudo-gnostic thought where everything embodied eventually gets abandoned, and everything else remains in thought or spirit. Hence why we're seeing all these evils regarding human bodies taking place (mutilation, abortion, etc.)

Putin resembles the dark side of Orthodoxy. He is a clear example of what can go wrong and how must not be. Frankly, this is the reason why I think the Orthodox Church ultimately fails. It ends up always being subordinate to the Emperor aka the State.

Before you say France tho, France actually forced the hand of Rome, by blackmailing Rome that if Rome doesn't give them the power to appoint Bishoprics, they would become Protestant. Of course Rome didn't want the latter, so it conceded, and the result was the massacre in the French Revolution, because the Bishops and Priests were loyal not to Rome, but to the whims of the King.
You could see pretty much the same thing with Russia why there were barely any mercy for the Orthodox Church from the Communists. They were the dogs of the Emperor then, and so many of the lower class associated the Orthodox Church as a hand of the Emperor.
Meanwhile, many places where the Catholic Church stood as the religion behind colonial powers, many colonies though rebelled against their colonial masters, retained the Church as part of the culture, with many low class people siding with the plight of the Church.
That's really it. It has to do with the order of the Church and State, with the Church being above the State. The Orthodox could not move to that.

@@fadmacat Compassion has nothing to do with the argument against gender affirming care, which I suppose is the thing you are most beset by (what about LGB & Q?). Compassion requires empathy, which is the ability to take another's perspective to the point of a shared feeling and understanding. "The other side" is moralizing, not being compassionate. It is universally prescribing what is deemed right and true.
Regardless of causal arguments for how gender dysphoria comes into the experience of a person, it is nevertheless the experience of some minority of humans. It isn't about "the voices on social media," (which *blindspot alert* we ARE on social media right now and so it seems the derogatory move to invalidate one side of the argument by characterizing it as "voices on social media" applies equally to both ends), it's about the one- and actual human being. Not an abstraction. Not a dogma. It's about a real life human person. So any conversation *about* said person ought to begin with real empathy into their lived experience.
If you start there, you'll find it very difficult to arrive at some universal, black and white, moralistic prescription for how people ought to move through their one precious life. Compassion is demonstrated at the level of the individual.

First, you are addressing one of the most fundamental aspects of humanity - that of being male or female, so are you surprised that there is a "moralistic" reaction towards it? That is, by saying "quit moralizing it and just let them be who they want, in compassion" IS in fact taking a moral stand on the issue. You may not think so, but it is.
Secondly (and you'll probably react in anger for generalizing but I don't know how else to THINK), we are frequently dealing with adolescents who are often impressionable, insecure and spend a lot of time online. Thus, compassion is extremely important when dealing with them. In my opinion, the church can be a good place because it specifically teaches them that they were created in in the image of God, that God cares for them, etc. Sorry, I don't know how to not "moralize" things when I am a moral being dealing with "moral" issues.

His Mother Mary, and in the Ancient Kingdom of Judah, it was the Mother that was Queen alongside the King of Judah, Gebirah was the title they had.

Terrible talk. I am very open to learn. But this was just an awful lot of claims without any substance. I was brought up in a Christian community, and I can totally understand why people were sick, bored and even harmed by this religion and were looking for new sources of meaning. I was lucky to find my way back to Christianity, also with the help of New Ageism. But this sort of conversations won’t do the job to help us understand what’s really going wrong rn. I‘m glad that Jonathan admits at least once at 36:30 that a petrified church was part of the problem.
Invite Dr Robert Gilbert or someone else with real gnosis and take a full talk with such a person instead of lumping some childish newage theories together and believe that is an honest analysis of spirituality outside churches.
